St. Mary's

I thought we were playing Mt. St. Mary's. Shows how far I've removed myself from really caring about sports this winter, even those at my local P5 university.

I guess we didn’t call every team in country like Moon claimed earlier this year. Clearly we didn’t want a D1. Maybe we called 1 team & then threw up our hands. Not sure why we even try to frame it like we tried.

This guys a weirdo. EL disputes the fact that bones hyland isn’t close to a first round talent and this troll replies to every one of his posts in every thread. Are you that offended buddy?

Fair point - if EL wants to specialize in Virginia D1 vs D3 games, he can't do that here.
They never said anything about Junior Colleges though....There could be a market for those Richard Bland - CVCC match ups. What about Hargrave and FUMA post grad games?

How much did we pay St Mary's to play us? Bob and Greg mentioned it, but not the amount. Any educated guesses?

No guesses, but Bob said it was probably more than St Mary's athletic budget for the year. Not sure if that was hyperbole or if D3 budget is that small. Coaches pay at good d3 is around 6 figures from what I understand, so guessing this is an exaggeration.

D3 is the Wild West of athletic departments so it varies. You’ll have schools with PT coaches sometimes with no experience in that sport then there are some schools with former d1 coaches that were PT there and took the FT D3 job. St. Mary’s is a solid program so imagine they have some decent funding where that wouldn’t move the needle for the athletic department. But I know 10-15 k would definitely pay for some ODAC “non-revenue” sports budgets at some schools.

Do Gilyard’s steals count toward his career total?
It's a fair question. Does this game even count?
Of course RichmondSpiders.com immediately updated our record to 11-4, and the pom-pom squad will insist that is our record. However, we all know that the NCAA Selection Committee and NET rankings still have us at 10-4.

Does this pad Mooney's all-time-winningest coach total? Will our next coach need to win two extra games to break the record?

As for stats, the lead article on richmondspiders.com is that we tied the Robins Center 3-point record. Our players' stats from last night are included in their totals.

The game and stats do count for NCAA purposes, but it is not considered by the NET formula.

I thought they might, if you look at the college scoreboard every night, there are a ton of D1 teams playing DII/DIII/NAIA teams this year. Seems to be the new normal. I think look for St. Mary's to make some d3 NCAA appearances in the next few years. Some good looking freshman and soph players.

I'm pretty shocked that the stats count, tbh. I don't think they should.
I assume the analytics and the committee don't count non-DI games.

But look at some of the smaller conferences, how often do SoCon, Big South, Big Sky, Southland teams play non-DI teams? It appears the NCAA stats and record do include those.

I also think if DI teams start regularly playing 4 or more DI teams, it will be proposed that the definition of NCAA records be changed going forward.

They have counted towards career and season stats since the beginning of time, for all teams. Forever, our press notes have shown that our highest points scored was against Bluefield, whatever that is.

I did not realize until this week how many of our fans (both on this board and off) don’t understand how scheduling and records work at the NCAA level. Or that they don’t recognize schools regularly schedule lower division opponents including the A10 like Davidson.

It's definitely more common with low majors, and seems more prevalent in the middle and western part of the country where the density of schools is lower and it's tougher to find D-I opponents within reasonable driving distance.
