after a long winter and a cold spring it was great to finally get back to Robins Stadium for some Spiders football...what a beautiful day and sense of optimism in the parking lot and Stadium...a good crowd was on hand...

I only saw the first half and I'll leave it to students of the game to comment on how the squads performed, but there were some general observations that I took away...

as promised the QB's will run more often
our tight ends will be more involved in the passing attack
the front four on defense were able to generate a pass rush
both QB's have strong arms and each made some good throws
the punting was rugby style

but my biggest takeaway was how strange it felt not to have KL at the helm after the last three seasons...

Now the long wait till August. Congrats to the team and coaches. Go Spiders!

If Tim Coleman stays healthy,he will be a very excellent UR linemen. You could tell he was ecstatic just playing today given his 1 year sit out.

The OL Surprised today. They will be very good.We need at least 1FBS OL Transfer to help with depth.Of the incoming frosh,Joe More might get his shot but Singleton just isn’t big enough now.

For a spring game the team looked pretty good. You realize how good Kyle was.... there were a lot of overthrows, behind the receiver throws, and Mancuso's long throws had to much air under them, both receiver and defended waited for the ball to come down. Either of the qbs will get better but have some work to do to match their predecessor

Was impressed with a few of KJ’s deep balls. Big weapon for our offense if teams have to worry about #14 running down the field like he did last year.

KJ throws a nice deep ball. As mentioned, all the qbs struggled with accuracy on the shorter and intermediate throws. You couldn't tell much about the running game became the qbs weren't live and we are going to use a lot of qb zone read runs this year. I am concerned about our punting game...even with the rugby style punts.

Prez Crutcher and his nephew sat inconspicuously on the 45 on the lower level for a little more than 1/2 of the game.Get to know this guy.He gets it.

Met Grayson Overstreet and his family. The kid looks physically ready. If Russ put him in the backfield we would have ourselves a huge weapon. Not sure an LB would want to take him on.

Any estimate or report on the attendance?

I was surprised at the low attendance, mainly because of the beautiful weather, and the AD did a very good job making an "event" out of it. Plenty of seats to be had on the West side of the stadium (the only one open).

Then again, we played the spring game on the practice fields over by River Road, so this is an improvement.

This was the largest attended Spring game that I can recall and I have been to a ton of them. Not sure where you were on Saturday. You weren’t at Robins Stadium.

I was at Robins Stadium - my kids participated in the Candy Dash and all the pre-game activities. Again, I thought the AD did a very good job. I spent some money there.

This wasn't a complaint. I simply thought there would be more people there. There were plenty of empty seats. I'm often unable to attend, so I don't have the sense of relativity you do. I was very excited to take my kids there, and had a great time.

32 thanks for the report on Overstreet...a good friend of mine and fellow UR alum from southside VA was asked by a Tech football fan how the heck we got Overstreet...that he'll be a heckuva player at Richmond...glad to hear it likely true...

regarding President Crutcher "getting it" could you elaborate more on what you mean? my memory comes and goes, but didn't Coach Rocco say the same thing after talking with Dr. Crutcher before his departure...the President "getting it" sounds like something good for Spiders athletics...

Go Spiders!

32, I second MoJo-Spider's motion.
I certainly hope that you are correct in your read of Dr, Crutcher. From what I've seen so far, I really like the guy and I'd like to know what he said or did to give you that impression that he gets it with regard to Spider Athletics.

Prez was thoroughly engaged during the game. His sidekick nephew, with whom I was conversing, understood the intregacies of the game including good critiquing.
I didn’t recognize that it was Prez until he got up to leave. We talked for 15 mins.He gets the importance of having strong intercollegiate teams.I mentioned that our recruiting space was bumping up against the Ivies
and that they were getting aggressive. He admitted same with a colleague son deciding on Yale rather than UR.I mentioned we lost a lineman from Ga to Yale and an Alabama tight end to Princeton. He took it all in.
He will be visiting my high school in the Fall in New Haven to give a speech and a recital.I didn’t bring up basketball debacle because honestly I don’t care.

I agree with both you guys on this. I was able to attend and I thought the AD did a great job of making it an event. The weather was awesome (maybe that played a part in some folks not being there...kid's soccer, etc). The craft beer tasting event in Lot B-3 seemed to get very good reviews and the equipment sale was fun to check out.

KJ rips it for 50.Picture perfect.

KJ really does throw a nice deep ball. That combined with the talent we have at WR should make for some big plays this year. I was also pretty excited to see us running a few more screens to WRs, TE's, and RB's on Saturday. Those plays will serve us well early in the season while the OL is finding their way.

Shown in that video - me, my kids, and those empty bleachers I was referring to. :)

Further on Grayson, the kid is an imposing player and with his running skills in high school I wouldn’t be surprised to see him(in addition to his LB position) run wildcat QB for us on short yardage downs.I pity the opposing LB who tries to take him on.Broadus was big too but he often ran straight up into the line.Grayson knows how to run.
