Since it is a crap shoot on most incoming freshmen, should colleges bring back
a JV program for first year student athletes? There would be advantage of orientation
to academics and basketball commitment, plus a limited schedule with coaching from
one of the assistants. Players would have a less rigorous schedule to acclimate to college
life. Plus this would eliminate the "one and done" recruitment process that takes academics
out of the equation..

enjoyed the frosh teams when at UR, especially the basketball which typically played a game before the varsity game, was fun. freshmen are much more prepared for playing right away now due to year round playing and the aau deal. the one and done is not a college rule, it is a nba deal and not that many players are involved in that to begin with and they are usually at kentucky, just kidding. there is much talk of going back to frosh being ineligible, mostly coming from athletic directors at power 5 conferences. if they decide they want that, it will happen and all the rest of us will follow.

I don't see it happening. I played on the UR frosh team in '69-70 and I do see the benefits. The down side is the cost. My team had 4 full scholarship players. That's 4 ships that are not playing varsity ball. To complete the team you have to find another 8 pretty good players who know that they have no shot at the varsity team. The expense to feed the team and have them travel, even by bus could be large. And then there is the issue of the one and done's. Granted, they are few, but could they leave after playing freshman ball? Would they not go to college at all and play in some developmental league or go to Europe for a year? I think the freshman ineligible ship has sailed and I don't see it happening again.

Cup, you were on a pretty darn good team, remember it well. the only thing your argument fails to consider is, the power 5 conferences have the money to do what they wish, the rest of us do not. really hope it does not happen but money is no object to them.....

Don't really like the freshman team concept. Would like to see our younger guys get minutes.
