Shafer Out

Figured this would happen. This may (inadvertently) help CM have another year to turn it around.

Kind of amazing that he’s the all time wins leader for UR WBB and yet in 14 seasons never made the ncaa tournament. That’s a heck of a long leash.

True, they will hope this buys them some time.
I would cast the AD and staff as remarkably juvenile if they think that firing the WBB coach is going to at all placate fans who want to replace the MBB coach.

How does that conversation go?

John Hardt: “I think these fans really want me to fire Coach Mooney.”
Random AD Staff Member: “Well, we could just not renew Coach Shafer’s contract instead?”
John Hardt: “It’s so crazy it just might work. I like this plan, draft me a press release. Change the locks on his office, stat!”

I was surprised to hear that he had a career winning record at Richmond

Second choice would be to see if Stephanie Gaitly would like to join her son in Richmond, Her red Rams just beat the black Rams in the A-10 Championship game.

Lol, I am sure the conversation didn’t go exactly like that, but we will know soon enough.

I wouldn't go that far, though I think it sends the message that AD and staff are not reluctant to make a change.

In the words of LeBron: "It's about damn time".

It wasn't a hard decision for Hardt to do this. The hard decision is going to be over the next few days.

That formula of all times wins leader being sacked "only works" if you are also all time loss leader......................................what are the chances there would be another coach with the same dynamic?....................just don't know.............

He should have been summarily discharged after that stunt.
Like that terrible accident was his fault?

It looks as if our AD knows what he is doing, contrary to some of the disrespecting comments I read here concerning his performance, and a pretty disrespectful nickname enjoyed by some.

Will be watching the Bucknell game today with interest.

Hardt not messing around. Let's hope it continues next week.

Is the eight legger sarcasm going over my head here? He's a year late. I would not call that not messing around. We wasted a whole year for no reason. I fear the same is coming for mens bball which is another mistake. Not going to give Hardt credit for being 1 year behind. Unless he's using the savings on not eating Shafer contract last year and applying it to Mooney buyout. That would be way too innovative and strategic for Hardt though.

Jabba the Hardt? Look Jabba the Hutt was a very powerful and feared leader. Sure I guess he was also spineless and a gigantic fat slug but that would be your nickname interpretation.

I was thinking this myself earlier today. Wasn’t she burnt out or had health issues the past few years?

Don't recall the details but something about adopting a foreign child and needing to speed more time to complete the adoption.

If Hardt lets Mooney stay another year, I will put him right in the same company as our last AD. Just along for the ride.

This is not about talent on the court. This is about coaching, and not able to put enough pieces that fit on the court. And coaching. Mooney is not a coach that can lead us to a high level of success. That is easy to see.

Well... considering she has already coached at and left UR, I doubt it. Although the team was pretty good with her at the helm.

Yes,sir.

Former Virginia coach Joanne Boyle fighting to finalize adoption of 6-year-old daughter https://es.pn/2sESxL0

Looks like she also has to have back surgery but put it off because of the adoption issues. I can't see her coming back yet, although it would be great if Ngoty was running around behind the bench with Grandma watching out.

The name I have heard here is Stephanie Gaitley. Now that Fordham is out of the Women's tourney, figure some news soon?

she is much older now but was excellent while here. she and boyle did very well and interesting to see if we hire another female to run that program. my interactions with Coach Shafer over the years were really good, a very nice guy and wish him the best.
