It seems to be the right time to begin a discussion of the game between SHSU and UR. IMHO, our defense will match up against the high powered offense of the Bearkats.

When we're on D, our line needs to find a way to get pressure on Briscoe. I love our secondary, but Briscoe and his WR's are good enough to make plays happen if provided enough time. We need to disrupt their timing.

When we're on O, our WR's have to make plays. I think our line may take a game to find itself and this is Kyle's first game back after a significant injury. He may not have a great deal of time, leading to early releases on passes. Our receivers need to take advantage of the 4-5 inches in height they have over the secondary and make things happen. High point the ball every time.

O badly needs to win first down. Sustained drives will keep a thin D off the field in the TX heat and help immensely against a potent offense.

What concerns me the most is the changing of the offense to no huddle hurry up. Mendenhall did it to UVA last year and we were fortunate to play them their first game; I think it was a major factor in our victory. Their timing was horrible and they seemed confused with it. It's a major offensive change, I just hope we have had time to be comfortable with it and also have the right personnel for this type of offense. I hope I'm wrong, but if I'm right it could be a long day for the Spiders. Seems like this game in particular we would be better off with clock eating sustained drives.

I agree with 05, we have to find a way to preasure Briscoe. I'm not nearly as concerned as Rick with our offense. I understand Rick's comparison to the uva's offense against us last year, but we just flat out had better players on D than uva had on O last year. That's not the case here. Sammy's D is not their strength. We will score plenty of points. The game comes down to how many stops can we get on D. I think getting stops means getting preasure on Briscoe.

After reading 05 and Ricky,I wonder how Sammy is only favored by 6.Should be at least 16.

Not sure why you inferred that from my post. I think we're the better team and will win by more than a TD. I didn't post what SHSU has to do against us. It's a much longer list.

The biggest disadvantage I see us having is elemental. It's supposed to rain Sunday. High is only going to be 78, so the heat shouldn't be a factor.

I hope I'm wrong but going on the road for this in a hostile environment against a KC Keller team that will know what we're going to try and do on both sides of the ball concerns me and I'm hoping we keep it close. I don't know if our D is ready for what the Bearkats are going to do on offense--its going to be a lot like JMU and Eastern Washington in precision and effectiveness.

Both teams are experienced, playoff caliber teams. IMHO, the o-line will be the key to the no huddle offense. No huddle does not mean we are going to throw it every down. We have 3 stud RB's in the backfield, any one of whom can carry this team. No huddle means there will be a quick snap.

What do we know about their offensive line? I am also concerned about our ability to generate pressure on Briscoe because Defensive Line is one of our thinnest position groups.

The keys to this game for us are turnover margin, getting pressure on Briscoe and dominating them at the point of attack. I like our chances of getting pressure because of what jmu was able to do to them and the fact that they return just two starters on the line. You have to believe we are watching that jmu film a lot. jmu won by being more physical. I think we absolutely have a chance to do that. We have three good running backs and we will be playing fast which hopefully will wear out Sam Houston. We have to make impact plays as far as forcing turnovers and special teams, that is a must. Also the kicking game could be a huge question mark for us. We all know that we are not very good at kickoffs and punts and we cannot afford to give these guys good field positioning. However I don't think punting will be a big problem because we are going to be scoring a lot.

In comparing Huesman to KC Keeler, I would have to give the advantage to Huesman. His team at Chattanooga put a hurt on Sam Houston last year in the playoffs. Sam Houston then limped into its game at JMU.

They're going to move the ball against us because they are a good team and you can't completely shut down a healthy Briscoe. Question for me is can we run the ball - 2 playoffs games last year we faced an average run defense in UND and a bad run defense in EWU. I don't know the final rushing stats but the consistency running the ball was never there.

Easiest way to work an up tempo & new offense is to be able to run for 5 yards consistently. The HBs are there, but can the O-line step up. For me personally, that's the key to the entire season. More so than the D-line

Pressure is big on D, but the EWU game won't look like this one. No more 3 man rush and it won't be primarily cover 4. Much more aggressive in the secondary and we've got the corners to do it.

I agree. It's tough to get tremendous pressure on Briscoe, because that offense is one where the QB throws quickly, without a seven-step drop after a snap from center. Our DBs will have to be great open-field tacklers, since the WRs at SHS can really be dangerous after the catch. After watching the UT-C vs. SHS game from last year twice, I am convinced that we will score points. UT-C lost because of a bad 1st quarter where they gave up big plays; they outplayed SHS for the last three quarters, with crucial opportunities blown and crucial penalties called. There are tons of ways they could have won. And we have better athletes than UT-C. There are many things that could go right in this game, and many things that could go wrong (first game under new staff, weather, injuries, etc.). I think we are going to be watching this one up to the end. I have already set my DVR to extend the recorded game to 4 1/2 hours, in case we go to overtime.

Bob just had KC Keeler on with him. Good listen. Hopefully the interview will be posted soon.

On defense, we have to force turnovers and limit Sam Houston's number of possessions. If the defensive line can cause pressure and force Briscoe to make bad decisions, our DB's have to capitalize with interceptions. When we aren't able to apply pressure, the defensive line has to get their hands up and force deflections.

On offense, we have to win our one on one match ups whether it is an offensive lineman versus defensive lineman or a receiver versus a defensive back. If we give Kyle time and separation on the outside, he will put the ball in the window. PJ Hall is their best defensive player, but the coaches can help neutralize him with a double teams and chips. All three RB's will get carries, but whoever has the best feel for the game should be the work horse later into the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Huseman-Keeler teleconference 8/22

really enjoyed this...a good listen...particularly KC's comments about our program and the types of players we put on the field...he got it right!

he clearly remembers the Ward over Flacco game; the Grayson game and the Strauss game at Newark...

hopefully his team and players aren't paying enough attention...
