After watching some of their games on TV this year, I finally got to see the Spiders in person. Here’s what I noticed about our latest defeat:
1. Grant is a beast. Definitely our best big man since I started following UR back in the early 90s. He and Cato carried the team on their backs. Grant covers a lot of ground with his strides and spin move, which St. Joe’s had no answer for throughout most of the game. I did notice quite a bit of whining on his end, but I’d rather have a guy play with some emotion than no emotion.
2. Cayo is much better than I ever thought he’d be. Boy he can drive and get to the hoop when he wants. He also nailed a 3. As his outside shot improves, he will definitely contend for an all conference spot.
3. That’s about it for the good. Gilyard was really disappointing. Certainly he had an off night shooting, but he didn’t offer much help on defense either. He gets steals, but he had trouble staying in front of his man all night. Reminds me of Asante Samuel who would get lots of interceptions, but couldn’t tackle to save his life. And his foul at the end was unforgivable. He gave them the game. Based on some stats alone, I really thought he was better than Kendall anthony. I’ve completely revised my position on that.
4. Gustavson-speaking of stupid fouls. I kind of like his size, and seems to have decent athleticism, but he was completely inconsequential to the game, except for his horribly bad foul with about a minute left which put Charlie Brown on the line on the other end of the court. He likes to dribble a lot, but he’s afraid to shoot.
5. Jake - smart, solid, but not athletic. Should be a 6 or 7 at best on a good team.
6. Grace - unathletic and overwhelmed. Should not play on a good team. It felt like the wheels were falling off the bus every time Golden left the game. It’s not his fault, it’s Mooney’s. Unfortunately for the Spiders, they don’t have another big guy, so when Golden and Grace were out, Cayo was the center. That should never be the case.
JJ- he is what we thought he is.
Mooney- big lead blown again. SJU fans were walking out saying “Wow, I gave them no shot to win this game after the first half.” What a letdown. I will say I heard on SJU fan scream “fire Mooney” right before pregame introductions.
