Richmond Football Upgrades Stadium Surface to AstroTurf® http://story.cd/AALUbX

The new turf system is one of the industry's best and will be in place for the Spiders' six-game home schedule this year. The stadium will feature AstroTurf's RootZone 3D3 Blend turf system. This premium product is AstroTurf's most popular stadium turf due to its combination of long-lasting performance and game day good looks.

The RootZone 3D3 Blend integrates three unique fibers – the slit film, monofilament, and patented RootZone – into one cohesive system. Combined with a Brock Powerbase underlayment for ultimate shock absorbency, this field will deliver superior playability, safety, and durability.

Sounds like a great advertisement. Hey why don't we do something "unique" and have a red field instead of a green one?

Didn't we spend $750M on the current turf just 6-7 years ago? So we can expect this cost that often? Certainly should be done, if needed, and assume the new one is better technology than the old. Seems kinda soon. Can we expect to have to update the baseball field that often as well? Another reason to not get lights and all the other improvements needed at Pitt Field?

We spend money on facilities. It is how we show our commitment to winning.

You mean $750K, right? The turf redos are normally in the couple million dollar range max. The facilities upgrades was a primary reason for several of the commits in this last class to join the Russ Bus, and all of the programs will see a nice bounce from continued upgrades.

The turf at Robins Stadium gets far, far, far more use than the turf at Pitt Field. Three sports worth.

And why would replacing turf at Robins have any impact on possible improvements at Pitt Field? If we are ever going to be a player in baseball, we needs lights. No lights, no regionals. No regionals, virtually no chance to ever advance to a Super or the CWS, in a sport our demographics show we could be pretty good at.

Amen

Yes, I meant $750K. Typing too fast. Makes sense on wear & tear since multiple sports play in RS, but hope a newer one will last longer. Guess we'll see where $ go over next few years and what the commitment really is and to what sports. Hope they do send more of it baseball's way, which could help recruiting. Some here and in alumnae base seem to think there is a bottomless amount of $ to spend, but I don't agree.

Ten years seems like the standard replacement rotation, especially since Soccer (W), Lacrosse (M&W) and Football all use the field. That and all the practices and other stuff.

Michigan replaced their field before last season and the old one lasted 15 years, and football is the only thing played on that field. Of course, they're a big program, so they could probably afford to replace the field every few years if they wanted to.

From Hardt letter 5/7-

...“In addition, Robins Stadium will be getting a refreshed look this summer as Richmond will replace the playing surface with a new AstroTurf premium surface and the existing track will be replaced with a new Beynon performance track. The work on both projects is expected to begin immediately following the completion of the Spider lacrosse seasons and will be completed in time for fall football camp in early August to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the on-campus stadium. Now that video boards are more reasonable, I wish we would have one at each end
of the stadium like so many other programs do. Hell, we have four of them in Robins
Center

You really want to get top recruits? An indoor practice facility would be key. I don't think anyone in the CAA has one, I'm not sure any FCS school has one, maybe North Dakota. It doesn't have to be a building like VT, UVA and every P5 school and most of the FBS have. Just do a bubble. Coaches at JMU were telling us that was going to happen there but since they left not sure if that is still true.
NDSU, UND, Idaho, Idaho State, UNI and Northern Arizona all play in domes, so I guess they double as an indoor practice facility, even though they probably have outdoor practice areas as well.

At least two Ivy programs have indoor practice facility bubbles for their football (and other outdoor sport) programs - Columbia and Harvard,

Kind of off topic but has there ever been any discussion of putting the track at another location on campus? I realize there's probably just not any room for it anywhere else but it would really help the aesthetics and even noise level at Robins Stadium on Gamedays to have the stands closer to the field.

This was a big bone of contention for many of us when the stadium was originally constructed, that the track should be moved elsewhere. Because of the track, the stands are too far away from the field and the atmosphere at the games is not what it should be.

Now it would be a very expensive fix.

they also got their panties in a wad over losing the big, ancient, oak tree. they planted something after killing it but just detested all the furor raised about it. if you are going to place a large item in the middle of the field, it should be one that is excellent not stupid looking and hope they have done it the right way this time but not holding my breath, not a big deal, like the tree, just a nuisance.

Hope they incorporate a better looking spider at midfield to replace the crabby looking thing that is there now

Agreed. I always found it little odd the Spider is only within the 45s, so 10 yards when lot of teams seem to extend their mascot or logo much farther out closer to 20 yards. Bigger should help make it less crab like.

I spoke with Jim Miller and gave, I thought, a compelling argument regarding moving the track. The summary of his response was that many factions at the University like the track where it is. Possibility of the Trustees agreeing to move the track was near zero.

When we routinely have true sell outs (butts in the seats) there may be a case for removing the track.
I don't see that ever happening.

Those "many factions at the University" probably never attended a game there. The track absolutely kills the atmosphere.

From what I understand, capacity is capped at its current size by an agreement between Henrico Co. and the university that allowed the stadium to be built in the first place. So how many people actually use the tickets they've purchased is an absolute red herring when it comes to removing the track, relocating the playing field and moving one of the grandstands closer to the field. Seating capacity won't change at all.

The issue is improving the game-day atmosphere. And perhaps more would use those tickets if the atmosphere inside the stadium was better. The stands are so far from the field it's like watching a game from the moon.

I watched the whole installation time lapse video...so do they not put the lacrosse lines on until after football season I take it?
