Mentioned in another post but feel it deserves its own thread. One of my favorite opposing coaches to ever visit the Robbins Center. His teams werent as strong by the time we came into the conference, but always enjoyed their style of the play and watching them growing up. Yes, I know he threatend to kill John Calipari in a press conference, yes I know he was gonna send in the goons against St. Joes. But I don't care. His teams were "philly tough" and were always a tough out come tournament time. RIP Coach.

Some pretty good history with Temple and UR even preceding our move to A10. A unique coaching legend with the raspy voice u can identify anywhere. Glad we got to compete against John Chaney.

Must have been some kind of "karma" when I mentioned in one of the SLU threads about not engaging in John Cheney type shenanigans to "avenge" Blake's injury last year in SLU game at Robins ....posted that today but didn't know about Cheney's death. He put Temple basketball on the map

Chaney’s game time BP was probably 200/120.Intense and entertaining with the thin tie undone next to unbuttoned white shirt, rolled up sleeves just above the wrist, with sweat dripping from brow with distinctive voice bellowing at players and refs throughout the game.

Big 5 games were wars.Mark Macon, his prized guard ,was a sharpshooter.

The Hall of Fame coach was so much more than a fiery competitor who became best known for his postgame run-in with John Calipari. Read more: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nca...ead-temple-calipari/wm9mc9pbpk0o1l1yvxa396zy3

I saw a Temple-GW game one time when they had Rick Brunson and Eddie Jones. Brunson made nine threes and Jones was everywhere. They were a sight to behold.

RIP Coach Chaney.

I believe he is the only coach to eliminate the Spiders from multiple NCAA tournaments:
The Sweet Sixteen after we had knocked off Indiana and Georgia Tech
The Fifteen Seed that had just beat Syracuse.

UR was humbled by 22 pts v Temple in that Sweet 16 game at the Brendan Byrne Arena.Macon had 24 pts if I recall.Unstoppable.

At ColeField House,Owls took us down by 13 with Macon scoring 20 pts and a local DC kid Donald Hodge, a 7-footer out of Washington's Coolidge High, had 15 points,I believe.Chris Fleming had a big game with a barrage of 3s for about 25 pts,

yes,I was at both of those games.

Yep, at that time I think Fleming set the NCAA tourney record for 3s, which has probably been tripled since. I recall Kenny Wood got an elbow from Shields or vice versa that hurt us in that game. Remember driving from Roanoke area for the game, get out of the car and run into Kenny Atkinson in the parking lot.

I was at the 1991 game as well. Shields had an absolutely terrible game, capped off by nearly poking Kenny's eye out, which ended any hope of a comeback.

Fleming was unreal - he had almost as many points off the bench as all 5 starters combined.

Attended both games in NCAA tournament that we lost to Temple. Got a "little payback" by beating Temple after the Sweet Sixteen loss the next year in the first round of the NIT 70-56.

Does anyone else remember the the two side of the arena chanting back and forth to each other with
”sweet sixteen!”
“sweet revenge!”

or is that all in my head?

I was at the Robins Center early when we played Temple in the NIT game. The bus pulled up, and Chaney was in the front of the line coming in. I have rarely in my life seen an individual as intimidating as Coach. He had his game face on already - and none of the players following him were anywhere near as scary-looking. I can only imagine what his 5AM practices were like. He was an amazing man. RIP, coach.

Temple should rejoin the A10. The AAC has done little for Temple basketball.
Would love to switch them out for the other two philly schools, then add ODU and Belmont for good measure. Round Robin in the division, play everyone else once outside the division. GW kinda gets screwed, but whatever.

Actually the A10 should get greedy and bring football back too while we are at it.

Add said schools. But then add Cincy, Charlotte and Marshall. Then add UCONN, Army and Navy as affiliate members for football.

Overtake the ACC with a 22 game conference schedule

Football would look a little like this. But lets be honest, we have to annex city stadium again, rename it after Ray Tate and expand it to 75 k and leave JMU in FCS purgatory to pay bills on their new arena. Bring back Clawson and steal all of JMUs coaching staff as an FU for doing it to us back in the day. Play a warmup game against WM every year at the Rob. (Don't forget a circle for this one)
