Richmond hoping Europe trip helps build unity with newcomers

Each has to make their own decision. I would go. Went to Atlanta Olympics the day after the bombing. Security was everywhere, never felt safer

Today 's TD has an article on UR and VCU decision to go to Europe to take part in basketball competition despite the terrorist attacks.

A spokesman for the Lambs was quoted in the write up.

Keith Gill? Not available for comment.

In my opinion we need to get rid of this "do nothing" AD!

He is an embarrassment to the university!

Speaking of embarrassments to the university....

With all due respect, the 96 Olympics were on our soil and the basketball trip is to a country that has had 6 terrorist attacks in the last 12 months and terrorist attacks were described as "the new normal" by government leaders.

I guess some of you guys feel Keith Gill is doing a great job. I don"t see it. In my opinion Jim Miller and Chuck Boone were better ADs. Had he not bren taken by a heart attack, Clyde Biggers would probably been an outstanding AD!

Your opinion of Keith Gill seems to be based solely upon the fact that he was unable to comment for a newspaper article. Perhaps he was traveling on behalf of the university. Maybe he was on vacation. Lots of people take vacations in the summer, in case you hadn't noticed. Who knows.

I'm not going to sit here and defend him as an infallible AD, because there certainly are things I disagree with. But I'm also not going to "convict" him for the petty reasons you are trying to. And let's not forget that it was Jim Miller who gave Mooney a 10-year contract. Nothing Gill has or hasn't done compares with that from a sheer stupidity standpoint.

I had the pleasure of golfing with Chuck Boone (Dick Tarrant was also in that foursome) and was very impressed with him as a very good and decent person, and as a man who had genuinely dedicated much of his life to the betterment of the University. I further have heard nothing but praise of him from others that knew him. That said, hiring Jim Miller was a step up that parallels in sports the rise in prestige, status and recognition of the school in general since the 70s. Chuck was and continues to be a great person, but when it came to the administration of our athletic program, we were ready for an upgrade.

I believe Jim Miller was a great AD transforming our system into one which today can and does serve as a model for many others. Miller was not perfect. I thought that the hiring of Wainwright was his biggest mistake, though I believe it was popular with most at the time it was made. But for the 3-point shooting of a kid whose last name was Blizzard, I doubt that he would have been considered. But it was one of the few mistakes that Jim Miller made.

I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that the extension given to Mooney at the time reflected the vox populi of alums and fans as well and that a significant factor in granting such an extension was making sure that we were able to keep him at UR, particularly influenced by his recent success and what VCU had done by increasing the salary and extending the contract of their coach at the time.

I really like Coach Mooney and I do not believe that the extension was a mistake given the circumstances. Mooney is human and will make mistakes. That said, I not only understand the criticism he has received the past year but believe that it has been justified and that it has helped bring about the needed changes now being implemented in recruiting. In fact, as much of a supporter of Coach Mooney as I am, I was probably the first to start his criticism with my thread entitled "MEDIOCRITY" which at the time caused many on this board to shun me.

My point is that everyone we hire in whatever department or sport will make mistakes. Sometimes a replacement is necessary. Sometimes criticism and correction are appropriate. Neither should be taken as a condemnation of the person.

While I cannot hold a flag to the optimism of the Ulla, in the case of Coach Mooney I am very happy we have him and with the way things are going with the basketball program. I believe in a few years (or less) we will be back on track, and I hope that those who struggle with this notion will soon come back on board.

Great post, iSpider. Jim Miller was an excellent AD and very personable. In fact, Jim replied in a personal way to every e-mail I ever wrote him. He had a very clear vision of what UR could/should be. Thanks Jim! OSC

I understand there is discussion about altering the trip.

Noted. To be clear, personally, i would travel to France right now. My folks were over there about a month ago and had a terrific time. If i was an athletics administrator, i would not send young men to France. Sure, the student athletes might be given an option to go ... or not ... but we all know how that sort of thing works out.

In the highly unlikely event that something does happen, I would think the school would have a gigantic liability on its hands.

They should use all the available extra practice time allowed for trip and then cancel at last minute due to unsettled atmosphere overseas.
Then schedule some scrimmages to help build team unity.

not to minimize what's happened in Europe, but I don't see this trip as a risk at all. yeah, some things happened over there. things happen here too. we're not going to some 3rd world area.

They should go. Obviously caution is called for, but this is the world we live in.

JOC tweeted that we are no longer going to France, but instead we'll go to Ireland, in addition to Germany and Holland.

Not sure that I have met many native Irishmen that are tall basketball players with good verticals. They are very good golfers at the most 5'10".
We should win the boards big time while on the Emerald Isle.Should be a feel good stop in an inviting country.

Depends on how many centuries you go back...my initial reply was meant tongue in cheek.
So was mine...even thought about mentioning the current opinions about safety in Paris vs Dublin, and what that says...

was wondering if we would change plans, the right thing to do. was reading an article a few weeks ago and this american who has lived and run a travel group in paris for over 15 years, mainly catering to american tourists, claimed she may have to shut down and move, her business has dried up. we have friends touring germany right now and are concerned. love to travel to europe, do not want to be like them at all but right now, would go to the islands, somewhere in the us but not there. think it is prudent when you are in charge of other people's kids, you think safety first not anything else. not sure when world leaders, particularly western countries are going to see the light and make some changes, changes which should have taken place a long time ago.

that's awesome. hope we get to see a blog like someone did many years ago (Myers? Underer? can't remember).
