I had the pleasure of golfing with Chuck Boone (Dick Tarrant was also in that foursome) and was very impressed with him as a very good and decent person, and as a man who had genuinely dedicated much of his life to the betterment of the University. I further have heard nothing but praise of him from others that knew him. That said, hiring Jim Miller was a step up that parallels in sports the rise in prestige, status and recognition of the school in general since the 70s. Chuck was and continues to be a great person, but when it came to the administration of our athletic program, we were ready for an upgrade.
I believe Jim Miller was a great AD transforming our system into one which today can and does serve as a model for many others. Miller was not perfect. I thought that the hiring of Wainwright was his biggest mistake, though I believe it was popular with most at the time it was made. But for the 3-point shooting of a kid whose last name was Blizzard, I doubt that he would have been considered. But it was one of the few mistakes that Jim Miller made.
I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that the extension given to Mooney at the time reflected the vox populi of alums and fans as well and that a significant factor in granting such an extension was making sure that we were able to keep him at UR, particularly influenced by his recent success and what VCU had done by increasing the salary and extending the contract of their coach at the time.
I really like Coach Mooney and I do not believe that the extension was a mistake given the circumstances. Mooney is human and will make mistakes. That said, I not only understand the criticism he has received the past year but believe that it has been justified and that it has helped bring about the needed changes now being implemented in recruiting. In fact, as much of a supporter of Coach Mooney as I am, I was probably the first to start his criticism with my thread entitled "MEDIOCRITY" which at the time caused many on this board to shun me.
My point is that everyone we hire in whatever department or sport will make mistakes. Sometimes a replacement is necessary. Sometimes criticism and correction are appropriate. Neither should be taken as a condemnation of the person.
While I cannot hold a flag to the optimism of the Ulla, in the case of Coach Mooney I am very happy we have him and with the way things are going with the basketball program. I believe in a few years (or less) we will be back on track, and I hope that those who struggle with this notion will soon come back on board.
