Richmond Athletics is a Zombie

I don't believe it is possible to compete for FCS Championships any more without a significant number of FBS transfers. Garnering enough qualifying FBS transfers is problematic for us. We will see difference this makes next week against JMU.
100% agree on this point. Was disappointed when Huesman in press conf earlier this year said it wasn't a major focus in their recruiting. Well, in CAA it seems to be for most other teams. Over 20% (or maybe more) of JMU's team is probably FBS. Stony Brook got 5 just this year from Temple and who knows how many others starting for them are from FBS programs. I get not focusing on guys with just 1 year of eligibility, but more with 2-3 years need to at least be in UR's sights, if we want to compete for championships. IMO at some point, FCS is going to have to set some limits on # of these transfers per class year for teams, or what's to stop a coach from going for 50% overall and/or colluding unfairly with certain FBS coaches.

I just think we need to pump the brakes on Hardy a little bit.

I think Fred will do an excellent job. That crazy football-type game he brought with him from UNC really has a chance to catch on!
Hardyball one of my favorites.

Guys I'm not saying I disagree but how many FBS transfers did STFU have? We have a lot of problems and just picking up a few transfers isn't going to solve them all.

Our national-championship team had ( I think) only two FBS transfers. That team was built by four-year commitments and outstanding coaching.

The bounce-back guys I remember (Corp, Cooper Taylor) came from elite academic universities and probably had no problem getting admitted. Not sure your typical JMU transfer (Rutgers, Pitt, UCF, Ohio State) fits our academic profile

10 years ago, all FCS team had less FBS transfers. Now many FBS players probably assume they'll move at some point in their 4/5 years, especially those who aren't 1st or 2nd on depth chart. Many of them could probably qualify for UR just like they did for UVA, Vandy or another school. It's important for UR to simply find ways to match up to the depth we're competing against even in our own conference. Particularly at foundational positions like O & D lines, LB, etc. In addition to Corp & Coop, we've had some great transfers come in from UVA and UNC. Would say quite a few were difference makers and made everyone else around them better (e.g., Michael Strauss). Believe all of us want recruits who grow and develop in our program for all 4/5 of their years, but we also have to recognize that the transfer market is important now in any long-term recruiting strategy.

I think you need to make sure you know your impacts. If you constantly bring in transfers and oust your recruited players you can lose credibility with the HS coaches and hurt recruiting. The new redshirt rules help us a lot.

I have heard too many unfortunate stories about how UR is perceived by HS coaches. I’m hoping the new staff can be honest & consistent and we can repair some relationships (and take advantage of where others are burning bridges).

Interesting How is UR perceived by high school coaches?

If the University of Richmond was actually trying to kill off it's division 1 athletics, what would it have done any differently over the last 4 or 5 years?

Simply "not build" the new training and weight rooms and locker rooms? Is there anything else that you would do if you wanted to bury Athletics at UR?

Kept Gill and opened a satellite DC athletic office. Other than that, they got it right.

hate to see my bud Moliva so down but know how passionate he and really most of us are and losing is not fun at all. it took RH a while to get the mocs going so will give him some time. from afar, watching umwcah play nc state and odu play tech, then seeing some newer northeast schools coming on........is our recruiting being muffled by the new fbs or wannabe fbs schools as well as the new schools up in our old recruiting grounds? think umwcah has upped their recruiting and telling those prospects they are going up, a nice tool. both football and basketball are becoming hugely expensive, whether it be salaries, facilities, travel, take your pick and will it ever stop, especially for a smaller school? watching the tape that 32, i believe, put up and Buster was saying that the local tv stations interrupted soap operas to announce that he was available to play in the Tangerine Bowl. how far has our school and its athletic programs fallen from where the entire city was interested and involved with us, a different era, a different school.

Simply "liking" this post would inadequately convey my amusement. Well done.
The fact is that I'm totally bewildered at what's going on. I'm not an insider, don't have secret information. I know a few guys that played and graduated from Richmond through the decades. I'm not sure who or what to believe any more. I personally believe that if we want to be a great university, it needs to include succesful athletics. My 10 year old granddaughter asked as we were leaving the stadium yesterday why we always lose. Other than the obvious, I told her that I didn't know. What's the truth for those that know?

I’m pretty sure I’ve left more Richmond games (basketball and football) early in the last year than I had in the last decade.

now for a real reply. if that school didn't evolve, it wouldn't be here today. There may not have been "yankees", but there were less minorities and women. I'm the furthest thing from a lib, and there is no way I agree with everything UR does, but once again you show your true redneck colors.
. If you consider a person who is proud of his Virginia, Southern and Baptist heritage a Redneck, then I fit the bill! However I don't own/ drive a pick up, own a gun, live in a trailor park, and I hold a BA Degree from UR.

I am bewildered just the same. I think we ended up having too many people in important positions that felt that if we spent "enough" money on athletics, just having the name "Richmond" emblazoned on the jerseys meant we were entitled to win more than our fair share of games.

That has been a whole school problem for years. I’m more involved on the academic side and that’s been happening there as well. We tend to throw good money after bad without being willing to make the hard decisions.

How in the world does the school win those "best run" awards? It is truly insane.

In the 60s our football program was 41-57-2. That includes our Tangerine Bowl winning team.* Our basketball team was worse. Glorious times, indeed.

It was a Yankee from New York and a Yankee from New Jersey that brought legitimacy to our two revenue sports. For them, this Virginian is grateful.

*As an aside, the 50th anniversary celebration was the highlight of yesterday. They deserve a bigger sign in Robins Stadium.

The truth is we don't always lose. We've had one losing season in her lifetime.

many of my friends during my time at UR were from the northeast, have always had a lot of students from that area. what we did have and not much anymore is townies who graduated from local high schools, attended UR and lived at home, a ton of those.

The UR townies attended "University College" which was part of the university. What killed UC was the establishment of the state community college system.

townies attended both UC and main campus. vcu killed much of the in state attendance at UR

I did not consider the VCU effect on the decreasing number of UR town students.
In fact if I recall correctly in the 70s if you lived in Richmond you had a very hard time, if not impossible, getting a dorm room freshman year. shortage of dorms.

VCU was just beginning.. I believe it was RPI before the merger with MCV, they played their basketball games in Franklin St Gym.

I’ve got to say, watching UMD completely botch everything does at least give me some perspective that things could be a lot worse.

Amen! When you have your eyes only on non rev sports and not have an enthusiastic fan base you are begging for trouble. Stony and Elon shouldn't beat UR. It's a problem and I don't think it will change.
Within five years we will be D3 or Patriot League.

I never thought that I would say that I'm looking forward to basketball season starting
