I assume this was brought up earlier in the offseason, but just saw the Beran kid from Collegiate had a very impressive tournament over the Holidays in the RTID invitational.

I don't think we were ever mentioned with this kid and we not one of his finalists and this is just one example of our failed recruiting, especially when it comes to top 100 and local talent.

I don't expect us to recruit and win top 100 kids, but when you have one in your own backyard of Richmond, this should be one we have a chance with and try to win. Especially when the kids final choice is Northwestern, it is clear academics are important to him and we should have been in the conversation. Anyone know if we were involved with this kid? What happened? Just curious cause he looks like a solid player and I feel like Richmond produces some really good recruits, but we have a hard time keeping them here or picking us over VCU.

Recent memory says Sherod was local, but does not appear to be heavily recruited (I could only find offers from Drexel and App St. Holy Cross, ECU. Demonte Buckingham was another local guy - and looks like he had offers from Cincy, ODU, and Maryland - so little higher get, but no help there because he is no longer with UR.

Beran was interested in engineering. Aside from not comparing favorably with our b-ball program, we didn’t have much shot ofnlanding a kid that wants to major in something we don’t offer.

How many top 100 recruits did Tarrant or Beilein land? Some of the stuff on here is beyond laughable.

We are in a conference now where teams land top 100 recruits. Not so in the CAA days. We also have increased our basketball recruiting budget, charter flights, renovated our arena, have a practice facility being built, and have greatly increased what we pay our head coach. I think it’s fair to expect more out of our current coach in terms of recruiting wins and results on the court. Don’t you?

Not at all. So, are you saying that if we get a new coach, you would expect him to do better than Tarrant? Really? We are also in a much better conference than the 80s and 90s CAA, where hardly anyone ever landed a top 100 recruit, so funny that you did not mention that.

VT this your response is off base. First they are saying better than Chris. And BTW the CAA may have been weaker, but among others Tarrant teams beat numerous top 25 teams including knocking defending NC Indiana out of the dance. After taking over a weak team and program, he took the CAA quality players to 5 NCAA's and 4 NIT's in 12 seasons.

My point is Tarrant did not land top 100 recruits, so why should we expect any other coach of ours to do that. I love Tarrant. Always have and always will.

Like others have noted, Tarrant did not land top 100 recruits because he didn’t have the facilities, the chartered flights, the resources, etc. We were also in a conference that didn’t attract many top recruits. The fact that Tarrant did so much with so little is a testament to how great of a coach he was. Right now, we will have the practice facility, we have the chartered flights, and all the other amenities and we play in a conference where A10 coaches have landed top 100 or 4 star recruits.

Your posts are becoming less credible because you don't appear to listen. Times and circumstances have changed since Tarrant coached. Why wouldn't we expect more?
More than Tarrant? Good luck with that. And UCLA should expect more than Wooden as well, right?

I for one was shocked Robbie Beran preferred tournament appearances over good practice appearances
Preferred the tourney or bigger P5 schools? Last time I checked, Northwestern and some of his other schools of interest were not constant tourney teams.

I honestly wouldn’t even hold the lack of consistent recruiting* against Mooney if we made the ncaa tournament once every 3 or 4 years. But because we haven’t done that, we really have to ask ourselves why, and it boils down to two things: coaching and recruiting. Mooney is a below average coach whose inability to have an effective game strategy and make in-game adjustments is becoming more and more apparent. Mooney could make up for that by being a great recruiter who lands a bunch of really talented players who are good enough to compensate for his poor coaching. However, Mooney is neither a good coach nor a good recruiter which is why we are in the predicament we are today.

* To Mooney’s credit he has landed several great players over his tenure. KA, TJ as a transfer, SDJ, Ced, DMB, Sherod, Gilyard, and Golden to name a few. But to compete for A10 championships and NCAA tournament appearances we need to consistently land about 2-3 of these players in every recruiting class. Then on top of that, we need to be able to utilize their skill set in the best way possible, which Mooney hasn’t really done. There should be no reason players like SDJ, TJ, Sherod, Gilyard, Golden, etc don’t make the ncaa tournament in their time here.

While I don’t share the notion that we should have been closer to landing Beran, the sentiment of being more competitive with higher end talent isn’t a crazy suggestion. We have a variety of challenges working against us here. Certainly the recent lack of success is tantamount to the problem but other considerations are academic restrictions, school size, the system we play and a presumed difficulty our coach has closing guys.

Not everything falls on CM but some of it certainly does. He has demonstrated an ability to identify and sign underecruited talent but has not demonstrated a great ability to close well-regarded talent. The notion that we can continue to rely upon this strategy ignores our recent and aging history.

Northwestern certainly has more academic restrictions than we do.

The larger point is that Johnnies and Joes beat X's and O's, and CM doesn't really give us either of those.
