So was at the bank today and on the work table was a display for western union. Why at a bank? Can't help it curiosity is a bad bug. At another bank a teller was speaking Spanish to a customer who was cashing a number of personal checks- guessing he provided residential labor services. Waiting in any line is just painful and causes my mind to wander. So what do immigrants, legal and otherwise have in common with large US corporations? The both send a large amount of money they earn in the USA overseas. As Chesterfield County is struggling coming to terms with a budget, the large portion concerns schools, just wondering the effect on the local economy of educating children of immigrants, legal and illegal, who are sending dollars overseas? Just a guesstimate, $120 billion/50 states/ about 90 Va localities is a lot of dollars.

yep, money goes out, money comes in but the common thread is government attempting to spend what they have been spending when they are not taking in as much but that is in good times and bad times. so you expect all monies to stay in one place? i sent money out of the states before, out of VA before, just part of life. not sure what you want to happen and how to make it happen. let's discuss.....

Ok , I'll go broader. Keep the money in the USA. On a wiki site to dispel perceptions regarding illegals the rationalization for sending the money out of the country is that the big corps and 1%ers likewise do the same. Bad argument that does not make the action right. Figure out the lost benefit to the country and tax that money.

we have a lot of probs in this country and the one to attack first is government(s) spending, then we can get to the small stuff. am surprised that this money is not taxed, heck have you looked at any of your normal bills, they all have a government tax added to them. that is the trouble with too much spending and too much taxing, everyone and every entity attempts to pay the least amount of tax that they can, so look for loopholes to accomplish that. anyone who pays taxes, no matter the income, attempts to use everything they can to pay smaller taxes, the way it works and the way it should work. there are no bad guys here, just people or businesses trying make their bottom line better. after all it is OUR money, not the governments.

I'm strongly opposed to giving anything to illegal immigrants. It only gets dicey when their kids are involved, because the kids are just innocent bystanders. I would support some type of temporary assistance for them with a firm end date by which their families have to leave the country or start the process of applying for citizenship like anyone else.

Isn't there a state or two that actually gives driver's licenses to illegal immigrants? I am sure the rationale is that they are needed as employees there, but it's a total cop-out by the state governments. I welcome anyone who comes here legally through the proper channels, but if you're coming any other way, I'm not on your side.

agree 100% Eight, not fair at all to those going through the immigration process the correct way to put millions ahead of them just because they are here in the country, not the right message to send. ironic that the president of mexico complains about us while his country is so much more restrictive and cut-throat to illegals there. if the US had mexico's immigration laws and ENFORCED them, we would not have this problem. amazing how many laws we pass and put on the books yet do not even attempt to enforce even when begged to by the states, like where i live, that face severe issues. even when the states with these problems try and enforce these laws on their own, they are told to desist by the feds, unbelievable but true.

In the RTD recently there was an article about an admitted illegal graduating from James River HS arguing very indignantly that she should be entitled to instate tuition. Was in CirCt on Friday and a single mom with four kids had petitioned the court for expungement of a felony conviction. She explained that every time she seemed ready to get a better job the felony conviction prevented her being hired and so she is stuck at a minimum wage job. Judge was sympathetic and explained that without a pardon from the governor there was nothing he could do. He really gently advised her that sometimes there are unintended consequences to your actions.....only if you are a Legal US citizen.

there are a million sad stories and most of us feel for the individual in most cases. does not mean you choose to ignore the laws which are passed or just take care of someone because you feel sorry for them. am all for second chances but also for those who break the law feeling the weight for what they did which may be not being able to vote or just being able to walk away completely clean. A, you probably see some really tough deals and not sure i could stand that for too long, hope you can process it and sleep at night.

I have a much more sympathetic viewpoint towards "illegals" - a term I don't much care for, but in maintaining the course of the conversation, I will not quibble over vocab - as I live in South America currently. I would like to think about why people choose to risk life and limb to get to the US. Is it only because that everything is so great in the US? Hardly... US foreign policy in many cases has caused many of the issues pushing people to migrate north. If you want people to go away, it would likely be in your best interest to tell our government to stay out of other people's business.

excellent thoughts K and would like to add that i wish we could keep the government out of our business, our lives as american citizens, more often as well. K, would also add that rather than the 19 reasons from the huffington post, one reason, welfare money, would top all of those.

I go back and forth on where I think government involvement is useful. I can appreciate a good libertarian point of view on a number of things. Not all things, of course, and there are spaces where I am very happy to have the presence of the government. Ethics are the bottom line for all of these issues.

Nevertheless, I think the "illegal immigration" argument is a canard, disguising the root of "the actual important issues." It is a symptom, not the disease itself. People have always migrated, and people always will go to where there is "better opportunity." Sometimes it's worth taking a look at how some of these other places got "worse opportunities." Sometimes the causes are internal, and other times the causes in these countries, particularly in Latin America, have been caused by external forces.

I did hesitate throwing a link from the huff post up here, as I think the readers of the forum probably would not tend to read it if given the chance to choose. But, I do think this article was decent at providing some reasons that people may be ignorant towards, regardless of the source.

Let me make sure I understand - we have an immigration problem because the US created such poor conditions in other countries that their people have no choice but to leave?

That reminds me of an article I read the other day about "income inequality" and how it is created by the rich getting richer. It is interesting to me how no one pays attention to the other side of the equation. The poor can improve their lot as well, just as these countries can take care of themselves. It amazes me how people can have their hands out and complain at the same time.

If you can take a look at the history of Latin America, you would indeed find that some US intervention had caused instability in places that were otherwise relatively stable. You can easily say that this has played a part in it. This was actually part of my UR international studies education!

like you K, am not totally onboard with the libertarians but am for a smaller, leaner, better managed government and the constitution lays out what it is responsible for but too many things have now fallen under its wing and it shows very clearly in our debt, the waste and inefficiency. as the world evolved over the centuries, many countries got much better, some not. think our hearts in the right place but seems that no matter what we do, manpower, money, whatever, it still goes into the pockets of despots, dictators, those in power. laugh at the venezuela socialist backers who claim they took over the energy industry so that the people would get the money and yet when hugo passed, he was worth billions, too funny. we have made mistakes, backed the wrong guys, mainly in the name of fighting communism no matter who the guy or woman is or was. the point is, the planet has evolved, wars, coups, mass murder, take overs and it is ongoing and guess that is what is supposed to happen because it did and still does. not saying it is right but its seems the way of man.....
