Pre season A10

Considering we've won over 15 games in every season for the past decade, I am confident that we will win more than 15 games. The only way I see us winning fewer is multiple injuries to our thin front court. I would be willing to do the same bet I had with eight legger last season, winner gets to choose the losers avatar for the next year. If we win 16+ I choose your avatar, if we win 15 or fewer you can choose mine.
Remember it is regular season, does that include A-10 Tourney? if not, then last 10 are:
16,17,24,24,16
18,18,15,19,19

If there are 31 games, I don't think there is anyway we don't win 16. And I do think the odds of 19+ out of 31 are better than some on here.

However my first goal, would be to see us consistently go 22-9...

True, I did not consider post-season games. I still stand by my original bet, we will win 16 or more regular season games.

Should be a young and exciting team to watch. Sit back and enjoy it. Best $25 I spend. Looking forward to football and basketball getting started this year. Go Spiders!!

The question I have: Are we a NCAA tournament team? Don't think so but we could surprise if all things come together. My thoughts are we would be vying to get into the NIT again.

Bet the ranch; we dancin'

we're deep and strong at the guard spots, and the A10 (and college basketball in general) is guard dominated.

I never make predictions. an injury throws everything out the window. but barring injury, we're a tough game for anyone this year. I don't understand a fan who looks at this roster and thinks otherwise.

Not only loaded with guards that can shoot, but can also defend and rebound. Getting enough minutes and fouls from the 4 and 5 spot will be the early season question mark. Still think we should pay TJ $150k to coach the big men.

Here is a strange vision I am having...Yes, it is a VERY specific situation and unlikely to play out this way but...
Imagine we have time for 1 last possession, won't need to play defense, but do need a 3, so...
We send out a very young team...
Sherod, Cayo, Schneider, Verbinskis, and Gilyard
I can see it now...

Money!

Anyone think we should redshirt two of the fresmen? With Grant, we have six guys in the class of 2021

While Shawndre was our best 3-point shooter last year, #2-Buck, #3-Khwan and #4-Nick followed. Bottom line, we will have a plethora of shooters. That is the reason Jordan Madris-Andrews or any other big need not score much.

17, if guys can play, class distribution doesn't matter.
Even if all 13 can play, all 13 won't play.

It doesn't need to be decided now, or even before games start necessarily, but if there's a frosh or two near the end of the bench, I'm fine if there are discussions between them and the staff about whether redshirt seasons would be of benefit.

Exactly. That is why personnel isuues will sort themselves on their own.

Our distribution right now looks like 1,4,2,6 - Oldest to youngest. When we get to this pattern again (2021-2022) we will be depending on the 4 juniors to be good. That will put pressure on the 2019-2020 incoming recruits to be the right players. Should be fine. But means you can't have many misses in the big classes every two years.

Yes, if it becomes clear someone won't see but a few minutes this year, then you start planning before that first minute.

Or you play 3 teams of 5 including 2 walk-ons...;)

most coaches have changed their thinking on redshirting for developmental reasons anyway because of the grad transfer rules. I believe Mooney even said as much in an article. You redshirt a guy & then may lose him by senior year when he should be at his best. You will see less and less of it among all schools no matter class size. Plus if the kid just isn't goo enough to contribute you've potentially given him 5 years on ship taking up a spot. Certainly there will still be redshirts for medical reasons. Now in theory this would be a good year for UR to do it with 5 frosh, years ago pre-grad transfers we would have. I'm not opposed but wouldn't be surprised if none redshirt.

in theory you're redshirting #13. we don't graduate anyone on scholarship next year. so #13 doesn't get any playing time, is somewhat of an afterthought at practice, and comes back the following year still #13 and likely further back from the pack than he already was.

if we had some seniors this year then yes, I'd be fine with the idea because of the big class. but I don't think it helps anyone this time. let them compete.

VT (kid).............take their money. It's too easy. This is that Spider time of year (in the off-season, when they are 0-0, kind of like the Redskins) and the future seems "oh so bright" with "all the talent we have." Groundhog day. 13 seasons into the Mooney regime and the Spideys are still pegged at #9 (out of 14). That's bang for the buck, huh!

Look, Scooter..........if you can find a non-Power 6 that earned an at-large with no seniors on their roster, good luck. URI will easily roll to the A-10 reg season and tourney titles with four senior perimeter guys (Matthews, Garrett, Terrell, Robinson). If you've seen Langevine and Akele up close, the Rhodies will be just fine in the middle. The rest of the conf will slug it out for 1-2 at-larges (if we're lucky). We had two last yr -- Dayton and VCU. A-10 staples. And both loaded w/ seniors.

I know you're a vcu fan but I agree with you. I think we potentially finish worse than 9th in the A10 next year. We flat out weren't that good without TJ Cline this year. I'm pretty much done with Spider basketball, way too much disappointment. That's why I'm glad that the school I go to has a good team that is fun to watch and coached by a great one on Buzz Williams. Can't say the same about Spider basketball.

A-10 is weaker than last year, if that's possible. Anyone can end up in the #2 or #3 spot. Agree UR would probably have to win the tourney even if they finish #3 ahead of VCU like last year.

it basically happened last year. Wichita State. Now I'm sure they had some very end of bench or walk on seniors, virtually impossible to not have at least a senior like that. And we'll have seniors too. Kirby and likely grad transfer. And no, in the name of Tom Yeager, I'm not comparing us to Wichita State!

Thanks for not comparing us to Wichita State with its 94% acceptance rate.

That's their choice who they accept. We still have to compete with them or similar schools in basketball. Also I realize Wichita St won the mvc auto bid but they still earned an at large & would have received imo but just didnt need it.

We saw Rhode Island up close last year. We housed them. Sorry you guys couldn't do it in two tries. Actually, no I'm really not.

I have read many posts by VT and never really viewed him as a loyal Spider support. I truly wish you the best as you follow your favorite team @VT!!

He's free to have his opinion just like the rest of us. I happen to disagree pretty significantly as it relates to what this team should become this year, however. This should develop into a top-4 team in the league by the end of the year.

if you're done, then you're done. don't let anyone here talk you out of it. good luck at Tech.

If I was done with Richmond basketball I wouldn't post at all. But oddly enough whenever it's said by folks on this board the frequency of posting seems to increase.

I'll be done with Spider basketball until a significant change at the top happens. Unfortunately one man is responsible for all the disappointment and inconsistencies over the last 6 years. Until he is gone I could care less what happens with Spider basketball. If more fans had my attitude then we might actually see that change happen.

we get it. now stick to your word. come on back when we're winning enough for you.

but if I ignore him, I won't know when he comes back ... older and wiser. and I'm looking forward to that.

I'll do it for y'all. I won't be posting on the basketball board anymore until our situation improves dramatically. Also I really want to know what the wager will be on the over under for wins this year. I'm a competitive person and still want to be involved in that.

You've already had two proposed wagers and have responded to neither of them...
