Deontez Thompson helps Richmond to triple-overtime win at Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. - Deontez Thompson was ready.
With Richmond's starting running back Xavier Goodall going down with a leg injury in the second quarter, Thompson didn't miss a beat, putting the sixth-ranked Spiders on his back in a 36-30 triple-overtime win over No. 16 Albany on Saturday evening.
Thompson finished with 112 yards on 20 carries and three touchdowns, including one in overtime, to lift UR (5-1, 2-1 CAA) to a key conference road win.
"Same thing happened in high school, first man down, I had to step up," said Thompson, a 6-foot, 200-pound redshirt freshman from Maryland. "Xavier went down, time to step up, man up."
David Broadus, the Spiders' backup quarterback, who is used frequently as a runner, scored the winning touchdown for UR in the third overtime, a 4-yard run. The subsequent 2-point conversion, which is mandatory beginning with the third overtime in college football, was no good for the Spiders.
But the UR defense held during Albany's turn with the ball in the third extra period.
Thompson's second TD capped a long drive and put Richmond up 20-13 with 2:44 to play. But Albany's Neven Sussman hit Jordan Crockett for a 51-yard score to tie it with 1:17 to play. Albany (4-1, 1-1) got the ball back but Ethan Starks missed a 50-yard field goal wide right on the final play of regulation.
Richmond's backfield has been severely bitten by the injury bug this season, with initial starter junior Gordan Collins going down with a season-ending knee injury in the second game against Norfolk State.
Goodall stepped up in Collins' absence. And now Thompson did the same Saturday.
"Xavier got hurt and Deontez went in and did very well," Richmond coach Danny Rocco said. "Deontez is very talented, just a little bit inexperienced. But he can carry the ball. He's explosive."
Thompson's touchdown runs were of 1, 4 and 14 yards, respectively.
Both teams got inside the 10 in the first OT but settled for short field goals. Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks had Albany's TD in the second overtime on a 1-yard run.
"These games are truly slug-fest football games," Rocco said. "We expected a street fight. ... We knew it'd be a dogfight.
"Our defense played very well. I thought we had a couple of situations where we got the ball for our offense and gave them a chance to extend the lead. We never really had the kind of rhythm on offense that I think we're capable of having."
Both Thompson and Rocco agreed that Saturday was a big win for the Spiders, as they were at one point ranked second in the country in the FCS until a road loss at Stony Brook in Week 3 dropped them in the polls.
"I think I've got some tough kids," Rocco said. "I've got some prideful, gutty kids and they really performed well.
"We came up here to win and that's what we did. It took us a long time to get it done."
