Hey everyone. My cousin is taking a tour of UR next week. She’s from a very small town, so downtown Richmond probably wouldn’t be appealing to her (thus taking away any spots I would recommend checking out). As alums of the university, what are good places she and the family can look at on her visit to help nudge her into going there? Obviously it’s a great school, but I’m always eager to show people what Richmond has to offer. Thank you in advance

I would have said to drive down Monument Avenue, which gave our fair city its moniker as The City of Second Hand Trophies (for the losers). But this doesn't apply anymore. I would suggest she go to Angelos, a very nice, upscale restaurant in the Ridge Shopping Center. Also, check out Azzurros, a restaurant at the intersection of Cary, River and Huguenot Roads (20 yards from campus). Make sure that she notices that Virginia Eye Institute is on pilings. If she goes to Azzurros, tell her to ask how high the flood waters were when Hurricane Camille came through in 69. Its waters were almost up to the Country Club of Virginia. Then have her drive up Cary and take a left on Three Chopt and a right onto Grove. She will see some of the local charm. If you want to tease her, tell her UR was broke and almost merged with VCU in the late 60`s, or tell her that the school was destitute in 1865, after it invested its entire endowment in Confederate war bonds. Nice finance majors. Canon Chapel on campus was the scene of a civilwar skirmish.

I was only 6 when Camille hit so I don’t remember that as much as when Agnes hit in ‘72. Remember the flood waters as we crossed the Huguenot Bridge and the couple of houses that were washed away.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I will pass the message along. spider fan, my apologies. Saw this thread in the most active part of the forum and thought it would be most visible here. Thank you again. Here’s hoping she becomes a spider!

No apology needed....basically my comment was on the irony of the topic of "off topic" !
Wish you and your daughter the best in her college quest.

Guess that rules out touring the war zone on Monument Ave and boarded up businesses on Broad St.
Best to stay on campus or go south or west. Maybe Short Pump Mall.

Pretty sure most veterans would agree that a little graffiti doesn’t qualify as a war zone.
I get the feeling this is SpiderK’s view of Monument Avenue

Not a "war zone" but "Crime, Grime, or Sublime". Fits in with the saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." The letters to the editor about the UR Magazine cover art of the graffiti on the Lee Monument shows a fault line of those who like it and those who find it disgusting. Also there is the broken window theory that states that visible signs of crime, anti-social behavior, which includes graffiti, and civil disorder create an urban environment that encourages further crime and disorder, including serious crimes. Opinions vary. Take your pick.

And yes this subject has nothing to do with basketball and would belong in the Off Topic category.

I love how the thread to take off topic posts to the off topic section has resulted in further off topic discussions. Well done, team.
It was suppose to a sign "Off Topic ----->"
Inside it is a box labeled "Off Topic" o_O
