ODU Game Thread

Stop me if you've heard this one before........Richmond had an 89% win probability with under 9 minutes left......and then.........

This one hurt, as a lot of them have for a while now. I get it. A few observations - Something is going on with Gilyard. Injury is likely lingering. Never seen him miss an easy lay up like he did tonight. I've seen him go in at crazy speeds, twisting and turning and make them. Appears to have less speed and spring, and no offense what so all. Going to be hard to win with him scoring single digit points. Andre continues to impress. Need to have him star to take more of JJ's time. Get Sal in for more than 2 minutes a game.

Mooney had an 8 point lead then ODU switched the defense and the intensity. That possession with less than 4 minutes in the game was the difference. BJ Stith was the answer tonight and we couldnt stop him. Gilyard looks totally hurt or lost a step tonight. Huge concern if Gilyard plays like that the rest of the season.

Gilyard is definitely hurting. The question is how long will Mooney keep playing him trying to keep his job. Kid played 34 minutes tonight while hurt.

Jake G looked hurt to me. He missed that layup early and threw up a terrible three pointer and then spent most of the rest of the game not really looking for a shot at all.
.
. Game #2 with Gilyard not looking for shot. He definitely is not 100% and Mooney is keeping him in hoping they can win. The team definitely looked totally lost earlier in the season without him, but I don’t see how this current plan is working either. The freshman that have been getting playing time are getting better and definitely have energy. Unfortunately, the energy can lead to some poor shot selection. Matt Grace played really well in his short number of minutes. For a plus, there were some more substitutions this game. Obviously, Mooney believes that Yates is the best shooting option “under pressure”, I suppose due to his experience level. He has a decent looking shot, but has a tendency to not get set. Also, he needs a buzz - he is constantly pushing the hair out of his face. The team did play better tonight, but once again we didn’t have a guy to takeover and lead the team to victory. That’s the main problem, confidence.

Noticed Gilyard was the last person back on defense almost every time he was on the floor. Hes just not himself and clearly favoring that injury. Thought Grant did pretty well overall. Really like Gustavsons grit and despite air balling a couple shots like that he looked assertive and had some good hustle plays. I do think Woj and Gustavsons are going to be good players, but we need to get those guys in the weight room. Would of liked to seen Sal a little more tonight especially in the waning minutes because it was clear ODU had the athletes to put a run on us.

Anyone else notice the weird statline tonight....believe we out rebounded ODU but committed twice as many turnovers as them.

Would have been nice to beat ODU. Not biggest rival but a rival & could have put any thoughts of at large by odu fans to rest.

If we had to lose glad it was by more than 4.5...just saying.

the 10 days off didn't help Gilyard's injury. that's not a good sign. this isn't something that's going to go away with a little rest.

I love the kid. he has a lot of heart and wants to be out there. and even at 50% he does help some. but because of the injury he's not the real Jacob Gilyard. and we won't win many games without the real Jacob Gilyard.

Mooney was asked directly by JOC in postgame whether Gilyard was injured. Mooney was emphatic that he was not injured. Said in the post game, that his confidence was down.

Gilyard seemed to start the game fine, but had a drive in the first half where he stepped awkwardly, and he was pretty much hampered the rest of the time. It was pretty obvious. I hope he does not play until after the new year. We don't need to put further stress on his injury against High Point and South Alabama.

It may have been obvious to you, me and the other 5000 people in the building last night. But you know who it was not obvious too: Chris Mooney.

He issued a blanket denial that he was not hurt after the game and said in the postgame that it was his confidence.

The game was Jones coaching, Stith shooting, and also wonder if Gilyard is playing hurt? His last two games have been tough going for him................

He's playing hurt, no doubt. All the signs are there.

OK guys, relatively speaking going against ODU (not the crap teams earlier) and losing the game only near the end, thought it was say, decent showing. Though now looking at the game ending stats, I can say only it was a good 1st half showing. :)

On this, we agree. I assume at this point a medical redshirt has been burned. It's too bad, as this is already pretty much a lost season (yes, it's possible to win the A10, but...c'mon). Of course, shelving him would disrupt #bestclassever plans for next year.
