In case anyone is thinking that a high level of personnel turnover is necessarily a bad thing, consider the following:
1. The Boston Celtics this year returned only 4 players from their roster the previous year (FOUR!). As a few observers have noted, this did not seem to hurt the team in the least bit. In fact, it seems to have helped! The key was that they retained the KEY PIECES in their puzzle (Horford, Brown), and they did bring in some pretty good NEW pieces. I believe that we similarly return the 3 key pieces in our puzzle.
2. Also note that the Celtics lost two all-star caliber players, in Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving. Most observers would have said they had NO CHANCE to play for the championship, and were strictly in a rebuilding year. This is what great coaching can do. We don't lose a Kyrie and a Gordon, but we do lose two guys who were likely to contribute significantly.
3. Finally, there is a real phenomenon in basketball, called ADDITION BY SUBTRACTION. We have seen this operate for us when ANO left for Pittsburgh, and our remaining center became "all-world" and had a great year. Since I am not an "insider," I do not know much about either Khwan or Buck, nor their impact on the "locker room." It is entirely possible that these guys were both effective leaders. However, I do believe that these is a chance that these guys were not a positive influence on team "chemistry." If so, then we could see some "addition by subtraction" happening this year.
As noted above, I have no inside information that would suggest this is true. However, there are very likely posters on this board who could intelligently comment on this topic. If so, I would love to hear their thoughts on how much we will miss Khwan and Buck, from a "team chemistry" perspective...
