NFL.com analyst Chad Reuter had some nice things to say about Brian Brown in the upcoming NFL Draft.

SLEEPER ALERT
Brian Brown, Richmond:
Brown has put up nearly 3,000 receiving yards for the Spiders over the past two seasons, scoring 11 times in his senior year. His speed is not elite, but he has plenty of quickness to leave corners in his wake. Brown's hands and catch radius are excellent. If he shows he can contribute on special teams early on, he'll eventually earn reps on offense -- and I won't bet against him making a difference there.

I think David is the only sure bet. Brian and Winston might see late round interest but more likely FA deals. Omar also had a private workout with the Rams or the Chargers can't remember which off the top of my head.

It wouldn't surprise me if David is picked as early as the 5th round. He had a great Pro Day. He was training for two months at Exos in Frisco, TX. It is a top of the line facility. If I am Brian Brown, Winston Craig, Omar Howard, or Thomas Evans, would you want to get drafted in the 7th round or go un-drafted and have the ability to choose the team I sign with? That's a tough question for players on the cusp of being late picks or UFA's.

The key for all of these guys is to stay healthy. I see Winston Craig going the route of Kerry Wynn who has done very well with the giants since
both guys have their heads on straight. I see Brian Brown and David Jones having a very strong chance of getting drafted since UR has a history
of WRs and DBs in the NFL. Omar is a tough young man, but for the pro game, I think he is too slow for the pro style LB.

While I agree that it's to the players' advantage to be able to choose where they want to go (if more than one team is interested, that is); I think the reality is the team coaches are going to give a draft pick much harder looks than a free agent, because the team has made an investment and they like to think they made wise choices. Things were a lot different years ago when they drafted what 12 rounds?

NFL DRAFT: Richmond's David Jones Proves Injuries Are in Past
Jones has rebounded from a 2016 season-ending injury by dominating in his Pro Day.

  • RICHMOND ATHLETICSRichmond's David Jones has put a 2016 injury behind him and is projected to be a day-thre NFL Draft pick.

Richmond’s David Jones had led the FCS in INTs and was the Colonial Athletic Association Preseason Player of the Year selection – then less than halfway through the 2016 season, he suffered a season-ending injury to his left arm.

Along with that disappointment, it appeared that the NFL interest waned somewhat as scouts wondered how quickly the safety would bounce back from the fracture. It was the same arm he’d injured in the FCS national semifinals in 2015, too.

After being considered a top five FCS prospect coming into the 2016 season, there were question marks. He wasn’t invited to the NFL Combine in March, you name it.

But here we are, less than two weeks away from the NFL Draft – and things are looking very positive for the St. Petersburg, Fla. native. The buzz is back.

“I just kept some good people around me – my parents, my coaches, my teammates, they’ve all helped with the process,” Jones told HERO Sports. “And of course I look to God overall over anything. With that being said I kept my head up and kept the mindset that everything happens for a reason. I used that as motivation.

“I’m back 100 percent, and I still have a good chance to be drafted.”

Indeed, he does. His Pro Day – March 14 – hasn’t hurt, for sure. He amazed even himself with his 4.43-second time in the 40-yard dash, and his broad jump of 10 feet, 9 inches is one of the top marks of any FCS prospect, at any position. At 6-foot-1, 205 pounds, he’s the perfect size for a free safety, and he’s also contributed on special teams before. NFLDraftScout.com rates him a 7th rounder to priority free agent. Other sites have him higher.

Coming out of high school, it would have been hard to have projected this. A good student, Jones was courted by several Ivy League schools. Three scholarship offers were extended – Richmond, Chattanooga and Stony Brook. The Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles and Miami Hurricanes moved past. So did the Virginia Cavaliers, who he posted 7 tackles against last fall in a dominant Richmond victory.

“Duke had some interest in me playing wide receiver and Texas Tech was also interested, but it didn’t get to that point where they wanted to offer me,” Jones said. “I played three sports in high school, I didn’t focus on just one, and that kind of messed with the recruiting process. But as it turns out? Richmond was definitely the best option for me.”

As a junior, Jones turned heads with nine interceptions to lead the nation – with four coming in one game. In the last offseason since the injury, he worked with Exos training for that critical Pro Day – and his on the field film coupled with his off-the-field training put him back in the position to be selected in the 2017 NFL Draft.

He’s a popular guy amongst the California teams – the L.A. Rams, L.A. Chargers and San Francisco 49ers are all in constant contact and there have been workouts.

“I think they like my versatility, the fact I could play free or strong safety well,” Jones said. “They like my speed, my tackling, my ability to play the ball in the air and make plays. I’m happy with the results and the feedback. There is always room for improvement and I will continue to improve. I can say I’m ready for it. I’ve talked to a lot of guys who went through this process. It’s a business so I’m going this season like that. Some guys may not want to be my friend, some guys may just want to get a spot on the roster. I’m ready for that.

“Every practice is going to be like a game – every single day. I have to go in with that mindset. If I do make a team and I don’t start, I’m going to be OK with that.”

I know the New York Football Giants are also interested in David. I like that fit. The Spiders have an established pipe line to Rutherford, and they would give him an immediate chance to compete for playing time. David only returned punts for us, but I think he could shine on special teams. He would thrive as a gunner on punt team and covering kick offs. Production on ST = Defensive Snaps.

so how many guys while not getting drafted will end up in a nfl camp should be four i would think that sound right? i mean of course the univ of richmond guys

@32counter

Stop by the Getty Mart on September 16th before the Howard game. I'll have a case waiting for you. I'll pick the microbrewery.

Cowboys plays in the Hall of Fame Game tomorrow. Good opportunity to see Brian Brown (hopefully) get several snaps

No play by play here? 2 minutes to half time.

14 yard catch by the right Brown.

Then corner of the end zone to the wrong Brown, Interception!...

An excerpt from an article following the game:

"Gathers is definitely fighting for a spot on the 53 (and the team may be forced to use one to avoid losing him), but another player who is a much longer shot had to feel good about his performance. Brian Brown had two catches on the night and looked very good doing it."

Congratulation BB. After watching the receiver corp for JMU drop pass after pass it made me further appreciate how good he was. I'm sure he dropped one or two but caught virtually everything throw in his direction
