New Offer -- 2020 PF Matt Zona

This is the right type of kid for us to be seeking. But the fact that he's a 2020 makes me wonder what we are doing with our two empty spots for next season.

Apparently we are leaving one of them open - which I'd rather do than bringing in a 2019 freshman that is still available this late. Just try to get a grad transfer with the other slot.

could be. or maybe we're preparing to lose a grad transfer next year.

There's a decent chance we lose two grad transfers next year, especially once Mooney is canned.

I think it is more likely that we are looking at the transfers that have been mentioned on the other thread for those schollies.

Maybe, but both of those guys would be sitting next year too. We need someone who can actually play next year.

And if you're talking about Nick and GG maybe VT could be a landing spot for their last shot at dancing? I see both were offered by M Young at Woffard. VT offered Nick too. I think Woffard made GG's final list. Young has plenty of roster spots to fill this season but what could be better than getting two proven talents next year? Of course all speculation on my part with so much that could happen in a year. Funny though that Woffard did make the Dance this season.

Just clicked on the VerbalCommits link to Zona and then headed down the rabbit hole of following other links to various players, both possible future and former Spiders.

My one thought (and I know I'm late on this revelation)...I am blown away by how many players have transferred out of UR in the past three years. Whether for personal reasons, violating athletic department rules, or lack of playing time, I couldn't believe how many players are no longer with us. to name a few , I saw Smithen, Stansbury, Friendsuh, Oddo, Diekvoss, Buckingham, Dominaus, Schneider, and Ford.

My other thought from said rabbit hole...I am shocked that the majority of those transfers either quit playing basketball all together or transferred to D2 schools, a surprising indictment of the quality (or lackthereof) of our program. Such trends do not suggest that we're recruiting A10 level talent, hence the reason why its refreshing to see other A10 programs pursuing Zona.

Not sure if that is sarcasm or a genuine sentiment. Obviously I'm new to the board, so apologies if I am rehashing previously-debated topics. Just blew my mind to see such turnover.
It is pretty astounding. But don't worry, the last bastion of Mooney truther's will hype the next group of "under the radar" recruits just as they did with every single one of them in your list above. And then when they transfer, that will be a positive as well because it opens up another slot for Mooney to do the exact same thing. Rinse and repeat.

can we take this conversation off the Zona thread and onto one of the existing threads that complain about people who don't complain every single day about our program?
At the risk of being somehow labeled a "truther", it's not possible to indicate how much I like this post.

Coop, all you need to do is look at literally every single other thread to see this same sentiment, or something close to it. It would be totally great to just have a thread devoted to Matt Zona the prospect, and not the fact that Khwan Fore transferred, etc. Also, it says you joined the board in 2008.

Let's be clear...there's a big difference between joining Rivals.com ten years again ago when it was an up-and-coming sports news website and starting to post on this forum (which started just yesterday).

Also, Kwan Fore is a distinctly different transfer from the ones I listed above. He was a graduate transfer with a UR degree and opportunity to pursue a masters degree at a big program. The others? Well, I'll stand by my commentary that they left for personal reasons, violating athletic department rules, or lack of playing time and transferred to programs of lesser quality than UR.

But given that I've appeared to have kicked a bee's nest (dare I say, spiders' nest?) I'll stand down on my commentary about our disappointing record of transfers and save it for another thread.

This thread is about a kid that Mooney isn't going to get, so lets try and keep it at that. In the meantime, I will oblige and wait for all of the great Matt Zona news to populate this thread.
