“A significant change could happen to the NCAA’s transfer rules.

As reported by CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd on Tuesday, a proposal that would allow athletes to transfer instantly following a coaching change has gained popularity. As mentioned in the report, players would be free to transfer schools “if their coach were fired or left for another job.” But the athletes wouldn’t be allowed to follow the coach to the new program.

The proposal would also permit players “to transfer without sitting out a season (as currently mandated by NCAA rules) in the event a postseason ban is handed down by the NCAA as punishment to their program.” Dodd points out that the traditional academic “year in residence” for transfers in all other situations would remain in place in this proposal, which originated in the Big 12.

Dodd notes that this proposal isn’t the only option being considered as a possible change to the NCAA’s transfer rules. However, he points out the Big 12 idea “seems to be the most detailed offering to date as a means of fixing the NCAA’s long-criticized transfer policies.”

Dodd reports that the Division I Transfer Working Group is expected to push forward “one or two proposals” by the end of May. If that happens, it would be uncertain if the proposal or proposals would be effective in time for either the 2018 or 2019 football seasons.

It would seem fair to allow athletes to transfer if his or her coach were fired or left for another job. Many times, athletes commit to a coach, not a school. Even though the athlete wouldn’t be able to follow the coach to another location, a change of scenery could be good for a player in the event of a major change to his or her program.

Stay tuned.”

I wouldn't mind this change. Much more reasonable than the free-for-all proposal that was floating around.

seems to be a better balance of "rights" -- it may give the new coach a better chance to get his players more quickly

Baseball and men's ice hockey also require sitting out.

AFAIK, the proposal to allow transfers without sitting in the event a coach leaves would apply to all of those sports.

There's also a football proposal floating around that would allow players to appear in up to four games and still qualify for a redshirt. Would have avoided the situation where KJ lost a year of eligibility stepping in for the playoffs last year. (Not that it really ended up mattering...we just redshirted him this year as Kyle stayed healthy.)
