I just did the tally Mooney has 10 wins and 22 losses against ranked opponents. Not feeling too good :(

I would guess at least half of those ten wins and likely more than half were in Anderson and Harpers last two seasons.

Most of those wins were the Harper and Anderson years. The last win against a top 25 team has been a while.

I believe our last win over a ranked team was Cal in 2015. To be fair, we haven't played many since then...Cincy and URI in 2017-18, and Auburn and Dayton last season. Opportunities have been fewer since the A-10 has been down a bit.

Yes opportunities have been few. As Bob Black pointed out last night was the first time the Spiders have ever played in Rupp Arena. We have also never played Kentucky. I was confused watching the game because the main take away was I needed to buy Purnell's Old Folks Country Sausage. Back to the subject at hand it's a great opportunity for us to play Kentucky in Rupp Arena on ESPN tomorrow. Hopefully Goose will be back!

Media guide indeed shows 13-22. Records against the top 25 for some of our other coaches: Tarrant 6-16, Beilein 1-6, Wainwright 3-7.

Anyway, here are all of Mooney's results:

2005-06: #5 Louisville (L), #22 Wake (L), #10 GW (L), #7 GW (L)
2006-07: None
2007-08: #3 Memphis (L), #16 Dayton (W), #8 Xavier (L)
2008-09: #10 Wake (L), #17 Xavier (W)
2009-10: #13 Florida (W), #17 Temple (W), #24 Xavier (W), #19 Temple (L)
2010-11: #8 Purdue (W), #23 Temple (L), #24 Temple (W), #25 Vandy (W), #2 Kansas (L)
2011-12: None
2012-13: #8 Kansas (L), #13 Butler (L), #16 VCU (W), #19 VCU (L)
2013-14: #19 UNC (L), #12 Florida (L), #12 UMass (W), #19 SLU (L), #23 VCU (L)
2014-15: #22 Dayton (L), #14 VCU (W), #22 VCU (W)
2015-16: #14 Cal (W)
2016-17: None
2017-18: #12 Cincinnati (L), #16 URI (L)
2018-19: None
2019-20: #18 Auburn (L), #7 Dayton (L)

Good data. Yep, add it all up, compare it with others, and it is not bad at all. Also, you have to factor in that more often than not when a mid major plays an OOC ranked team, it is away from.

We actually do a pretty decent job of getting the big guys on neutral courts rather than at their places.

True away OOC games against top 25: Louisville, Memphis, Kansas, Florida....we went 0-4.

Two home games against Wake...we went 0-2.

The other eight were on neutral courts. A couple of those were NCAA games (Vandy in Denver, Kansas in San Antonio), while the others were Florida in Sunrise, Purdue in Chicago, UNC at Mohegan Sun, Cal in Vegas, Cinci in the Caymans, and Auburn at Barclays. Couple of those had definite geographic advantages for the big guys (Florida...4-hour drive in the same state, Purdue...2-hour drive), but at least we weren't playing in their home gyms and I'll note we won both of those games. Overall on neutral, we went 1-1 in the tourney games and 3-3 in the regular-season games.

4 wins 10 losses against non conference top 25 teams
8 wins 12 losses against conference ranked top 25 teams ( I assume most wins were at home)

We're 9-12 against ranked conference opponents...

Home: 6-2
Away: 1-8 (Win was at VCU in 2014-15)
Neutral A-10 Tourney: 2-2

Just a question... if it is covid related illness how can he be back so soon? Isnt there a quarantine minimum?
They always specified it wasn't COVID. Said he was tested multiple times per day once he started feeling sick and they were all negative.

So Cal was our only win against a OOC team in a season we didn’t make the NCAAs?

Takes a few days to ship from Kentucky!
Be very careful. The Old Folks Country Sausage has tiny pieces of bone in it. If you bite into it, be prepared to lose teeth. That maybe is why it is called Old Folks, those who eat it will eventually have no teeth.

Thanks Gallipoli - no worries, my response as yours was probably as well, was "tongue in cheek". My only "plan" to enjoy Old Folks Sausage is "virtually" so I will "virtually" avoid the tiny pieces of bone. Thanks for your concern for a fellow Spider!

It is called “old folks” sausage instead of “pork” sausage for a reason.

Which is why it comes in Soylent Green flavor...

There are 347 D1 schools. 25 of them are ranked. If you are ranked you are in the top 7% of college hoops. That means we were considerable underdogs in the majority of those games. Anyone want to do some acttual research on how that compares to other coaches or we just going to assume its terrible ?

I don't think it's terrible at all. He compares favorably to some of our most storied coaches in our program's history.

As you note (and it's true of all Richmond coaches), we're the underdog in nearly all of those games. It's not like we've been a top 25 team ourselves for many of them.
