Senior Day recognizes rise in men's lacrosse

The UR men's lacrosse team will celebrate its seniors Saturday at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium, where Furman visits in the Spiders' final regular-season game.

Warmups for the Southern Conference game will need to be completed a bit earlier than usual. The Spiders feature a large senior class that has rapidly elevated the program into the national rankings (No. 17).

UR has 14 seniors, almost all of whom came aboard for the Spiders' first Division I varsity season of 2014. That year, Richmond lost its first five games and eight of its first 10 but rebounded to win the Atlantic Sun tournament and earn a spot in the NCAA tournament field.

Richmond (10-3, 5-1 SoCon) absorbed its first league defeat last Saturday at Air Force, which won 9-7. UR has lost three games by a combined total of four goals (9-8 to Duke, 8-7 to Virginia). Furman (7-6, 6-0 SoCon) is the conference's only unbeaten in league competition.

The Spiders have lost in the Southern Conference championship game each of the last two seasons. They went 11-5 (6-1 SoCon) last year and 11-5 (6-0 SoCon) in 2015.

Richmond will be one of four teams involved in the SoCon tournament at Robins Stadium May 4 (semifinals) and May 6 (final). There is no admission charge to regular-season UR home games. Admission is $10 per day for the SoCon tournament.

Nope.Somehow AF got #1,UR #2,Furman #3,JAX #4.

Not clear how SoCon came up with tiebreaker decision.

We play Furman again,Thursday night.

How? Seems kind of dumb when there's a three way tie for first, each team beating the other. And we have the best goal differential of those three games

Wish they would have explained the tiebreaker. One possibility is overall conference goal differential: AF was +43, we were +33, and Furman was +32.

From the SoCon office:

Thanks for reaching out. Please see below for the tiebreaker policy in the event of a three-way tie when all three teams hold the same record against each other – in this case 1-1. Furman had the lowest goal differential out of the three teams and Air Force won the head-to-head matchup, 9-7, against Richmond in the regular season, thus Air Force secured the No. 1 seed over Richmond.

“If the records are the same against all teams, then the seeded position would be determined by looking at (1) goal difference in Southern Conference games, whereby the team with the lowest goal differential of the three would be removed from the three-way tie consideration and the highest seed in the three-way pool would go to the head-to-head winner of the two remaining teams (2) goals FOR in Southern Conference games (3) goals AGAINST in Southern Conference games.”

Thanks. Seems kind of weird to do a two-step tiebreaker with different criteria, but okay.

Regardless, it's a new season. Let's get back to the NCAA tournament. See you all at the Brickhouse Thursday AND Saturday!!
