Mens - @ GMU Wed 1/8 7pm ESPN+

It wasn't all our lack of D; we held them to 64 points, 10 below their average, forced 15 turnovers, they only shot 17-44 (38.6%) from the field,.

Defense has been better the last 3 games. The effort, which is 90% of defense, seems to be at another level. Agreed - positioning and helping is key, but if you got guys flying around, hustling, and just being gritty and annoying - it can improve and has improved.

Our issue here was the long scoring drought. Said this before - it seems to be a characteristic of all Mooney teams. And yes - within a game, there are runs and droughts on both sides - but UR always seems to have extended drought at the worse times, usually 2nd half. In this game - we went from 2 minutes left in first half to almost 12 minutes in the 2nd half without a bucket. That is just too long. Especially with, and I am a big believer - coming out at half time, especially on the road with a lead - we were up 4 I think at half, coming out to start the 2nd half is really where you can deflate a team. Having a strong start to 2nd half - maybe build lead to 8 or 10 really puts the home team down. Instead - we go 8 minutes without a bucket. And if you look at GMU - they didn't have any of those lapses, they just kept chipping away, kept building their lead and next thing you know - they went from down 4 to up 9.

Effort was good - tough loss, this was one we let get away, and to get to my 9-10 game A10 win prediction - we really need to win these games. But who knows - Dayton has now loss to GW and UMASS.

Guys, Mooney doesn't win at Mason when he has good teams. Did we expect him to win there with this year's team. We did enough to compete and stay close, never felt we were going to win this game.

If D-Lo is out for a while, that will give Mooney something to fill his press conferences with other than talking about how and why we are Quad 4 team this year.

Hanes literally shoving our guys over under the basket and no call
Is there no limit to how much force an offensive player can use in attempting to move a defensive player out of the way? Or were the refs just ignoring what Hanes was doing? Walz absorbed some very hard elbows/shoulders in the stomach area.

we've been good on the defensive boards this year. not last night. GMU got to almost half of their misses. that killed us. other than that, the defense was pretty effective.

one thing that annoyed me was our unwillingness to take advantage of our size when GMU sat both Haynes and Emejuru. they went really small but we just ran our normal stull and let them rest their bigs. I know Walz isn't a low post power, but if he's covered by a 6'8" 200 lb kid, ffs get him the ball down low. or put in Beagle who can take advantage of that inside.

I keep expecting B Artis to get hot every time he makes one. he looks like a shooter. his resume says he's a shooter. I figured if he stays healthy he might be another J King. but he just can't hit shots yet. maybe that changes. sure need him to, or one of our guards.

late in the game Haynes pushed Dusan so hard in the lane, he would have hit the floor at the 3 point line ... if Walz' chest didn't break his fall. I'm not looking for every bump to be called but that was egregious.

They held Hunt to only 6 points, 10 points below his average. Even more striking, there were 22 fouls called against Richmond and ONLY 10 against Mason. I understand giving the home team a little advantage in fouls, but 22 to 10? That is one thing I do not like about NCCAB- the inconsistent fouls called.

My worthless observations were these:
  1. I fully agree that there is a palpable difference in the defense the last three games. Fundamentals aren't perfect, and a few of them simply aren't quick laterally, but the effort and intensity has seen a noticeable uptick. So I would like to say good job by players and staff for that improvement.
  2. Roumaglou still plays like a talented freshman. But I think he's plenty athletic, his shooting form looks nice, and he's got fire. I like him as a player -- just wish he was actually a freshman and not a junior.
  3. Tyne is really disappointing. He has one speed -- frantic. He really doesn't create any offense for anyone but himself. He doesn't dribble with a purpose, even though he's fast. He doesn't see passing lanes, so the ball never ever gets to the person setting the pick for him. And he's a wretched shooter off the dribble, but he keeps taking shots off the dribble. He doesn't get his body (feet & shoulders) square to the basket, so it's just a very low likelihood of success form-wise. Up top, the follow through looks OK, but to me it looks like the body and shoulders aren't in the right places when he shoots. I had a lot of hope for him, but he's been a major disappointment. I'd be playing B. Artis a lot more over Tyne (although maybe moot with DLo injury).
  4. Tanner had a few good games in a row, but last game he went back to being a passenger. He needs to be more assertive in all phases, not just stand outside looking for a catch-and-shoot three. He's got more ability than that and we saw glimpses of it.

Good observations Kneepad.
1. This drives me crazy - i.e. that we are now motivating the players to have defensive effort and play hard. After our first secret scrimmage I pointed out this seemed to be a huge issue. Why did we try to "switch the flip" all of the sudden, instead of enforcing from day 1.
2. Glou - definitely looks to have potential. I guess PRACTICE vs NBA players for 2 years on the top team in basketball does not necessarily prepare you for game play at D1 level. This is the point I try to make in the long game of redshirting that Moon is playing. You just do not have the ability to lock in mentally and adapt to the game red shirting and practicing. SEE GLOU as prime example.
3. Agree, really liked what Tyne showed last season, but a struggle this year. Not giving up on him, but just did not make that jump for some reason we were expecting.
4. Tanner - showing some promise......BUT the little I have seen, has looked dreadful on defense. While he may not be the most super athletic guy, I do think he has enough to be a solid defender. I think he is really just a great example of point 1 above - 2-3 years in. I have seen the dribbler make one move and Tanner gets beside him and lets go straight to rim. This is fixable. Needs to be enforced by coaches. Crazy.

Good observations Knee pad.

I like AP. He plays with fire, he is athletic, he can shoot. But yes, he is a junior and given that he can do all of that, one would expect greater box score contributions than what he has given us.

In my opinion, Tyne has regressed this season and everything you said about him was spot on. He is probably the biggest disappointment on the team. We thought our team strength was going to be our guards, who could both create pressure on offense due to their speed and ability to get to the rim. Unfortunately, Tyne just plays out of control a lot of the time. He is giving me Isiah Wilson vibes and think a change of scenery might be best for all parties next year. He was entering Mooney's dog house when B Artis returned, the D-LO injury may save him for now though.

Tanner looks to be that he has very little body flexibility. He plays ram rod straight most of the time. He is not an athletic wing, nor is he a a particularly good shooter. For those reasons, I don't see a high upside for him as some type of all A-10 player. I do keep rooting for him because I think he can gives us good minutes, just think his ceiling is not that high.

I too think they were worthy observations Kneepad.

But I must tell you...I miss Kevin Bacon.
