Kwesi Abaka

Kwesi will be a contributor on the court, in the locker room and off the court. What more could you ask? Please give our players and coaches more respect. OSC

Who is disrespecting him? We are looking at his 4-year track record of a basketball player and extrapolating that he isn't very productive, because that is a fact. Interpret that as disrespect if you choose to, but you're the one who is mistaken there.

If you can't say something good about someone, then it is best to not say anything at all. If we continue to say things negative all our players as we do, how in the world can we expect the truly exceptional player to want to sign with us. Give our recruits a chance to show their metal and critique them later.

Definitely helps us this year from a depth perspective. Pleased to have Kwesi aboard. Still doesn't solve for the future. Our frontcourt depth looks awfully lean after this year.

2016-17 - Cline (6-9), Wood (6-8), Abakah (6-8), Bernard (6-6), Friendshuh (6-10), Golden (6-8)
2017-18 - Friendshuh (6-10), Golden (6-8), Godwin (6-7)

I don't think there's any disrespect here, his numbers are what they are. He's probably not what some might call an "impact transfer" but he may end up being serviceable and there's not much downside to adding him.

Agree 100%. Fine with filling a one year vacancy but brings little to table other than eating minutes and fouls to give. Thought staff could and would do better with transfer signees.

Welcome aboard Kwesi! This is much better than leaving an open spot. From now I think we'll land a transfer, and grab a project 2016 player.

seems like a great person, and I always like having great people in our locker room. basketball-wise, he's a big athletic body. we needed that. it's June. we needed a serviceable PF who can give us quality minutes when needed, and provide a practice body.

based on his career, we won't expect much production. we didn't add a top of the rotation guy. we added depth. and that's something we needed.

Welcome aboard Kwesi. We need some depth inside, and he seems to fit the bill. Hopefully Bernard can come onboard too. These guys may not be game changers, but they can add some athleticism and depth on the interior. I think it is very critical for PF to get his health back and be able to contribute, and Golden to be able to play 20 minutes/game.

I am glad to add a tall, big person who can contribute on the glass. I don't care at all if he shoots 0 shots a game.

As for the thread, there's a lot of you that I picture being like Clint Eastwood at the beginning of Gran Torino. It must be miserable to hate everything all of the time. You can say "I'm just being realistic" all you want, but the fact is you chose to find the bad parts about this and dwelled on those. Pretty much one day after saying "Mooney can't close."

Welcome to Castle Black, Kwesi.

Example lineup with Abakah:

Fore
Jones
Sherod
Abakah
Cline

Looks like plenty of offense and Abakah's presence gives us nice interior defense.
Like it, Mountain Spider. Marshall Wood could either start or at least get substantial minutes to light it up from three. DeMonte will also have to get minutes as he can be a game changer. OSC

I expect we'll plan on 1-2 grad transfers again next year. we won't add 4 more guys to the Godwin/Schneider class. a grad transfer or two next year would fill the open class, and allow a spot in the 2018 Golden class.

Another positive spin, he is here to replace Kovien not Terry, if that is the case, how likely is this to be an improvement?

This is a low risk, high reward pickup. He benefits us where we need is most. And if he can give us 5-10 points every once in a while we'll have a good year

This is not bad or good post...let's look at the facts he's probably going to play less than 10 minutes a game, my guess is about 5-6. He provides depth and a big body for practices that's about it. If it was more than 1 year we probably wouldn't be after him.

WHY DO YOU HATE HIM SO MUCH??? STOP BEING NEGATIVE!!

Just saw his commencement video, seems like a team leader with some size. Not a bad way to fill out a thin frontcourt roster for one year.

I love how the positive posts, who are also then lambasting other for being negative include the following statements:

"Based on his career, we won't expect much production" S-man
"I don't care at all, if he takes 0 shots per game" Kneepad
"If you can't say something good about someone, it is best not to say anything at all" gcarter (who then doesn't say anything at all about him:)
"you won't be impressed with his stats" R&B
"He is a better June signee than Kovien" Long Time Lurker

You guys need to stop "hating" so much. ;)

My statement didn't lambast anyone either, I was only making a statement of christian values.

his stats may have been limited by playing behind a better player. No real thought he will be all league, but I believe he fills a need

No reflection on this young man or anyone else, but is it asking too much to go after guys who can at least make 60% free throws? As we well know, even if someone has the skills to help the team, they become a huge liability at the end of close games, JUST WHEN WE NEED THEM THE MOST.

And while I know the two things aren't related, I just can't wrap my brain around the fact that a guy with a degree in electrical engineering can't figure out how to make more than half his FTs.

And my glass is 46% full.

Good point, Rick. But another way to look at it is that the poor free throw shooter plays earlier in the game saving our better free throw shooters for minutes at the end of the game. OSC

Fan1, very perceptive of you. Kwesi played behind Northeastern's best player, Quincy Ford (also 6' 8" 225 pounds), who was a redshirt senior. Quincy made an all conference team every year and tweeted recently about his workout for the Boston Celtics. OSC

Spoke to someone that often talks to TJ. UR was first on TJ, and his first visit, he then visited Charlotte. Staff was on TJ early once knew he was leaving Niagara. We were helped by having some friends of the University that knew both Mom and Dad. Tj indicates staff did a good job recruiting and happy here.

Kwesi's role at UR will be very different from NE. As we have a plethora of scorers, his role will be to defend and rebound. He should be great at this role. Welcome aboard Kwesi; make Richmond great again!!! OSC
Agreed, we will need his 5 fouls to spell TJ and help young Mr. Golden.

Glass half full: His passing looks really impressive, which is a huge plus in our system. The fact that he can take charges is a plus too. We basically need him to be a defensive role-player, and to add value in that way. I believe he will help us, if only for a few minutes per game...

Yep to all 3. I'll take it. Welcome aboard!

Outstanding! Kwesi exudes talent and leadership. He has charisma. Look foward to him being a Spider! OSC

Not surprised to see that Ulla was high on the old grad transfers, as the boards eternal optimist that goes without saying. But Moliva!

I was extremely low on Kwesi and JMA, but I am a higher on Noah. Not expecting a program changing recruit, but he will contribute a lot more than the last two grad transfers.

Averaged 1.5 points and 2 boards a game at Northeastern last year. Clearly not anywhere close to the same league as Steeves or Skara.

This guy is going to make Deion Taylor look like Kevin Durant.
Thanks for posting this Mo. Reading back through that thread which was just 2 years ago, I am impressed as to how many of our fans have become much more critical or discerning of Mooney and his recruiting since that time.

It was a d*mn love fest by most of you all for a guy who averaged a 1.5 points at Northeastern.

"d*mn love fest by most of you all"? not what I read. pretty low key and reasonable. it was a late signing to fill a hole.

some of us root for the laundry and want to be nice to welcome a new athlete to the family. nothing wrong with that.
