I understand we just got 6-8 Kwesi Abaka from Northeastern

I saw this guy a couple times while watching the kid from Freeman. He is at least 6-8 strong and very athletic. Should be a help with D and rebounding. Not great on offence but that is not our biggest need. I like this get. You wont be impressed with his stats.

Can he play this year? Looks like a good get and should help on defense. OSC

Couldn't get any court time at Northeastern of the CAA. Somehow I don't see him helping us, but I hope I'm wrong.

Kwesi's role at UR will be very different from NE. As we have a plethora of scorers, his role will be to defend and rebound. He should be great at this role. Welcome aboard Kwesi; make Richmond great again!!! OSC

see the link above to his twitter page on the May 9 tweet to hear him sing at graduation. The kids got skills. Also he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

How do you know what his role will be?

I don't know how much of an impact he or Malcolm will have, but what I like about this is Mooney's action to look for people who can help our defense. He is aware of our weakness and is trying to get the right personnel to fix it. It's a good step in the right direction for our program. Not just with respect to our play on court, but also that Mooney is willing to have flexibility and make adjustments.

Averaged 1.5 points and 2 boards a game at Northeastern last year. Clearly not anywhere close to the same league as Steeves or Skara.

This guy is going to make Deion Taylor look like Kevin Durant.

At least with these highlights, he shows a good ability to draw charges, get blocks, and pass the ball. In the right system he has the potential to add a lot

He played 3 years at Northeastern, averaged 1.2 points per game, 1.4 rebounds, .1 blocks, and a 45% FT shooter for his career. That is a large sample size to judge what his game looks like and probably will be pretty similar here.

No no no, obviously he has had a basketball epiphany and will most likely dominate the A10 next year. I imagine 35 mpg, 15 ppg, 12 rpg and 3 blocks per game. Mooney actually recruited him out of HS, convinced him to go to Northeastern and do nothing for 4 years so as to avoid suspicion, then transfer here for a dominant 5th year. It was a brilliant plan, really.

Dude, it was the system there...

For comparison, Deion averaged 3.5 points and 3.0 boards and shot 48% in FT,'s for his career. So if you loved Deion's game, this guy should be right up your alley, just don't expect him to fill up the stat sheet like Deion did.

So, you can consider that "half empty" I would call it a factual based comparison to a recent player.

Abakah is a singer too--Blocked shots,Taking charges, singing National anthem. This kid does it all.

Sang at NE Commencement-John Kerry even listened.

I guess he's coming to take some classes in our graduate school electrical engineering program...

probably wants to take some business classes to better understand how to handle the business side of his electrical engineering operation

He didn't do anything well at Northeastern basketball-wise: poor shooter, can't finish at the rim, poor rebounder, lots of turnovers, not many assists, fouls a lot but didn't draw many fouls, bad at free throws etc. (though I have a lot of respect for him as a student, he majored in electrical engineering). I doubt Kwesi will see more than a few mop-up minutes here and there, if he is playing more than 10 minutes a game either Mooney did the best coaching job in the country and improved Kwesi's play immensely or we are in very, very big trouble.

All that said, I have no problem with this signing. This is a very low risk move (essentially no-risk), he is only taking a roster spot for 1 year and that spot wasn't going to anyone else. Worst case scenario is he doesn't see the floor this year and we recruit someone else next year. Also, based on a video posted above he is a really good singer, which is cool. He seems like a smart, funny, talented guy, someone who I would love to hang out with. He will be a good teammate.

What I did like in video was he stayed in and around the lane. We need a lane
presence and he seemed to be a decent passer, showing several assists. Needed
depth at 4-5 and he serves that purpose.

Outstanding! Kwesi exudes talent and leadership. He has charisma. Look foward to him being a Spider! OSC
Kwesi will help us a tremendous amount. Here is an example with NE when they made the NCAA tournament: OSC

if he gives us 5-10 minutes a game and an inside presence he will be a big assist, and as said if he doesn't work out, he's one and done. His age will add maturity and NCAA experience to the team. He also appears to be very personable and should help the kids enjoy their Europe trip. May not be a grand slam, but a good addition

Hard to understand how 'fans' disrespect our players and programs so much. As for our new players, at least, allow them to appear on the court, before you dis them. I'm hoping Kwesi has a very productive and enjoyable year as a Spider.

Who is disrespecting him? We are looking at his 4-year track record as a basketball player and extrapolating that he isn't very productive, because that is a fact. Interpret that as disrespect if you choose to, but you're the one who is mistaken there.
