Kovien Dominaus

I would like to see a whole game tape on him. I really like his shot, and high release point with his size and length. Also seems to have a decent feel for the game, and ability to handle and pass pretty good for his size. Strength and quickness don't appear to be A10 level at this time, but he looks like a guy that has some upside. I know we are going to have some folks questioning this one, but I don't think it is a bad gamble based on his size and shot. Sounds a lot like one of URI's recent comittments.

But seriously, I like a lot about his skills, especially his ability to get squared to the basket and the quick release.

coming on strong, I wonder if he'll be a candidate to redshirt freshman year to develop more and get stronger. yes, I know the downside to redshirting. this may be a good use of one, though.

Kovien Dominaus 6'7 WF 2015
One of Ohio's most surging senior prospects, Dominaus just continues to get better, and as a skilled 6-foot-7 wing that can flat out shoot the ball, we love Kov's upside at the next level. More of a power forward in the summer, Dominaus has improved his perimeter game this season, most noticeably adding a one-dribble pull-up that he used on a variety of occasions on Thursday. However, in the second half, Dominaus would go to work in the paint, making his way to the line 10 times, knocking down every attempt at the charity stripe. With Div. II offers from Concord and Urbana, Dominaus looks to wait out the season to decide on a school, and as a full academic qualifier, the lanky wing just made end up higher than what we thought coming into this year. While his toughness was something that many in the area questioned prior to his senior year, Dominaus has turned into a flat-out monster around the basket, going for 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win vs. East, while using his length to sky for boards and finish around the basket. Dominaus has improved his ability to finish through contact, converting three And-1 plays in the second half.

It's a little tough to understand why other notable programs didn't get involved in this recruitment but i'll keep an open mind. The video looks good.

Welcome aboard!

Probably fact that he played very little AAU ball and really didn't do much until his senior year. And please don't redshirt him or he might forget how to shoot the ball like has happened to another player who came in with a pretty good looking shot.

Seems to me he will almost certainly be redshirted. He will not get much playing time this year if he doesn't redshirt, there are a ton of players in front of him and he is still very raw according to the articles I have read.

I am sure you are right 2011, it has probably already been discussed between player and coach.

Looked like they were playing the Washington Generals in the first video, however he does have a perfect trajectory on his 3 pointers. Hopefully nobody screws that up.

I think Mooney has been going after long range shooters recently, and Dominaus seems to fit the bill. If Wood or Freindshuh turn out to be good 3-point shooters then having Cline, Wood/Freindshuh, Dominaus at the 5/4/3 and SDJ and JJ/JP/etc. at the 1/2 could be a really dangerous 3pt shooting lineup. Could be fun to watch if everything works out, but it is a couple years away.

In 2011 we had 4 starters who shot over 40% from the 3, along with 2 more players who shot over 36%. We were the 16th best 3pt team in the country. We were good that year.

Chandler Diekvoss, version 2.0??? Hope I'm wrong but geez why do we even think we are going to get kids like Sherrod and Buckingham and talk about them on here, when it always ends up being some kid we never heard of, who we are definitively his best offer.

It does appear that he blew up his senior year, but then again if he blew up that much, other D-1 programs would have been on him. So, either we are smarter than everyone else and have some unique eye for undervalued talent, or we just recruited another Smithen, Diekvoss, Singleton. I got blasted when I said this about Diekvoss and his one other offer from Northern Kentucky when he committed and will probably get blasted again. Only time will tell.

releaase looks like Reggie Miller's to me. guess that's setting too high a bar, though.

Tennessee Martin >> Northern Kentucky. But yeah.

And regarding redshirting, did we not learn a damn thing with ANO? I don't care if he's ready or not... STOP REDSHIRTING!

It is time for us to let our freshmen and other players get playing time to develop a bench for later on our conference schedule as well as the tournaments.

There have been late bloomers who became stars and high recruits that never developed.
So let's welcome kid in and give him a chance. He can shoot and that's a good start.

I will like him even more if he plays with a chip on his shoulder. We have had a number of players over the years that "were not of the level" of our league, but yet they were very productive. So keep telling a 6'6" shooter he cannot play.

The kid looks pretty decent to me. Odd about the other offers, but who knows. Seems like Mooney is bringing in a bunch of big guards and will let them fight it out to see who can earn some PT. Whoever doesn't quite make the cut, we can package in a trade somewhere for a power forward in a year or two.

I don't think true fans would be dissing players, who haven't even had a chance to appear on the court as a spider. I like these recruits, give them a chance to develop their talent.

Domainus better know how to play defense or he will be relegated to the far end of the bench.Mooney's emphasis ain't offense,it's defense.

He shoots and looks like a former Spider,David Brewster, who was run out of Dodge because of his inability to play D.

This year's team is going to turn some heads and prove us all wrong!!! Something great is in the air and we don't even know it.

Welcome aboard! The tapes suggest some good athleticism, and the history suggests that this young man is definitely still developing his skills, and may have a high "ceiling." I find it very intersting (if not surpising) that we have one "issue" with a redshirt, with ANO, and suddenly there is strong sentiment that redshirts are now a bad thing. How many successful redshirts have we had versus one bad experience with a redshirt? I will take the odds, which suggest that we have had "success stories" with the VAST majority of our past RSs. This player appears to be a very good red-shirt candidate, if only because he probably needs to add some weight and some strentgh, and because we have at least two small-forwards ahead of him, who will be graduating after this year. My guess is that a red-shirt has already been discussed, and that it will work out to the player's and to UR's advantage. ANO was an anomaly. Get over thinking that RSs are bad simply because ANO did not stay for his senior year.

FYI, I really like that he shot 77% from the free throw line during his senior year, and went 10/10 in one game. As some of you know, our small forwards have not had a stellar history with their free-throw shooting. Hopefully, TD and DT (and MW) will all spend lots of time in the RC this summer, and they will all be in the 77% range, but I like a player who has already proven an ability to hit the FTs!

He's going to struggle on defense and trying to drive like most frosh. He is a pure shooter for now. He will need to slowly add elements to his game, but that is a perfect form jumper already. Andre Dawkins at Duke took 3-4 years to learn defense and not turn the ball over. Be patient, because instant offense is something Richmond has really needed as 12 point leads slip away against the zone defense. Dominaus=zone buster.

Not too high, not too low, same for every recruit. Time will tell.

I see DK as primarily a 3 ,but can play 2 or 4 in our system. I like his length, I like his upside, Hard to tell much from the tapes we saw, and not much in the way of other teams looking at him, but time will tell. What I like the most is the kid seems very driven to succeed. You can measure the height, the speed, the shots, but you can't measure the heart. Show us what you've got DK! Welcome aboard!

I want everyone to see this personal statement written by KoVien. It does sound like we have a winner on our hands.

gcarter, thanks for the link. Really like KoVien and what he stands for. Great that he was a member of the National Honor Society. When I watched some video of KoVien with a colleague, both of us were initially impressed by his form on his jump shot: high, quick release which occurred at the pinnacle of his jump. Perfect form. Then we thought, well maybe he cannot jump. Wrong. KoVien has significant hops. Honestly, he must be a late bloomer, because at the this point he is inseparable in his skill set from other 3 or 4 star recruits. Welcome aboard, KoVien! Roll Spide!

Thanks Ulla, I was totally impressed with him as well. I was just thinking that we possibly have a pure diamond in the rough. He really reminds me of a player coming out of Danville, Va. Yes sir, you can call me crazy but he does reminds me of John Newman. He is driven and to me has the "it" factor written all over his face. Welcome Aboard KD!!
