VMI has had a record year. This is their best, and only winning, season since 1981. They have a very good offense, which they call the Air Raid. They have a strong QB and a very good receivers. This is their first time in the FCS playoffs. I am really pulling for the Keydets. This is one of the great stories of the year.

VMI running the air raid offense could give jmu trouble just because it is hard to defend but I don’t think they will. JMU will be able to lock up vmi’s receivers pretty easily because I would assume based on what VMI usually has at the skill positions that they don’t have the speed to get separation against the jmu DB’s. I haven’t watched a second of VMI football this year so maybe they have a bunch of speed at the skill positions this year but I would guess not.

VMI will be missing their starting QB so the Air Raid offense isn't what it was earlier this abbreviated season.

With VMI without their QB, JMU is going to win by at least 3 TDS by halftime. Sorry VMI. Great story and absolutely pulling for you. But anyone outside of the VMI locker room would be crazy to think they are going to go up to the chicken coop and win. Plus I bet JMU feels pretty disrespected with a 3 seed. Regardless of what happens this saturday has been a very successful season in VMI with hopefully more like that in store for the future.

Game notes VMI v Citadel

depth chart page 5

1.This game will not be about VMI Seth Morgan QB

2.VMI is 1 dimensional on offense.Halfback pitch will be read easily.QB rarely runs out of the shotgun.

3.VMI stopping JMUs offense is VERY problematic. At 1st glance JMU will be able to run and pass whenever it wants.
JMUs size will dictate both sides of the ball.

4.VMI lost to ETSU at home.

Even if VMI is able to score a little bit they still won’t be able to stop jmu offensively. JMU is gonna try to run it down their throats because I know there is no way vmi has any size up front to try and slow down the dukes running game. I can remember when their coach saying before that they want to average 250 yards a game rushing the ball and I would expect that they go over that this week. I wish we could get our running game going like that. There is nothing I love in football more than seeing a great running game. I would absolutely love to see us average 250 a game rushing, must be because I learned football from Mike Henderson. Speaking of rushing 32 counter is one hell of a play call.

Notes:
- Herres (Walter Payton Award), Snyder (Buck Buchanan Award) and Wachenheim (Eddie Robinson Award) are all national finalists for FCS legacy awards.

- Herres is the first VMI player to earn offensive player of the year honors from the league’s media since running back Thomas Haskins in 1996 (VMI was not a member of the SoCon from the 2003-13 seasons).

- He is the first wide receiver to earn the offensive award since Appalachian State’s DaVon Fowlkes in 2004.

- In seven games, Herres has 67 catches for 807 yards (115.3 per game) and seven touchdowns, all of which lead the league.

- Herres was the Stats Perform FCS Offensive Player of the Week after grabbing 15 catches for 207 yards and three touchdowns in a 36-31 win at Wofford.

- Snyder is VMI’s first-ever defensive player of the year.

- He leads the league in tackles with 10.9 per game, totaling 76 (25 solo), and sacks per game at 1.14 (8.0 total). Snyder is third in the league in tackles for loss with 1.36 per game and 9.5 total.

- Snyder has helped VMI rank tied for second in the SoCon in scoring defense at 20.4 points allowed per game.

- Wachenheim is the first VMI coach to earn coach of the year honors from the media since Bob Thalman in 1981.

- He was named the AFCA FCS Region 2 Coach of the Year on Wednesday.

- Wachenheim led VMI to its first SoCon title since 1977 and its first-ever FCS playoff berth. The Keydets also posted their first winning season since 1981 and got off to a 5-0 start to the season, its best since 1960.

- The Keydets earned their first-ever FCS national ranking this year, reaching their highest-ever ranking of No. 10 on March 29.

Yes,and the sun will rise in the West on Sunday morning,
ha! some claimed the sun did rise from WVA when the Keydets won their way to the NCAA basketball tournament Elite Eight in 1976, just ask B. King and E. Grunfeld of UT...

but I'm not sure if there are any Carter's, Bynum's, Montgomery's, Reppart's and Krovic's on the football team...but there must be some who are made of the same stuff...

good luck Keydets...

I’ll pull for the Keydets but I am not putting any money on them.
I can’t bet on this game because it’s an in state game but even if I could I think I’d stay away from it. JMU should win by at least 2 scores but I base that entirely off of what VMI historically has as far as athletes. I haven’t watched a second of vmi football this year so they may be a lot better than I think they are, hence why I would stay away from it.

Keydets better than I realized. They’re doing something right in Lexington.

They played JMU noticeably better than UR did last weekend and deserve the higher ranking.

The onsides kick was perfectly executed by VMI.They were screwed on the call.

The eleventh-ranked Keydets (6-2), making their first appearance in the FCS playoffs, scored with nine seconds left to pull within seven points, but JMU recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

The Keydets Seth Morgan was 30-of-50 passing for 286 yards and two touchdowns. He was intercepted three times. Morgan threw touchdown passes to Jakob Herres and Max Brimigion and also ran for a score.

Morgan, a redshirt freshman, replaced Reece Udinski after he suffered a season-ending knee injury midseason.

VMI rolled up 403 yards of offense against the top defense in the FCS.Twice as many yards as UR.

VMI had an historic season from so many angles. Their coach deserves COY honors in FCS. To do what they did with 63 freshmen, only 6 seniors, and a substituted QB to run a complicated offense, their run to the playoffs is remarkable. They gave JMU a real game. Something other schools might observe about JMU, VMI stuffed the line and dared JMU to throw. Considering VMI threw two interceptions in the JMU red zone and still only lost by 7 is a real testament to their staff - especially adjusting from a 21-3 deficit at the hald to lose by 31-24. I look forward to UR playing them at RS.

JMU is very beatable in my opinion. They do not throw the ball well so if you can stop the run reasonably, as we did last week, you have a very good chance to beat them. We held them to 23 last week so doing what vmi did today wins the game. If we get more dynamic on offense in the fall than we can beat them. Just not sure we will actually fix the offense though.

Even with the loss VMI shut me up. Good on them and hope to see continued improvement. Did not know they have to recruit 67% of their kids from the good ole state of Virginia in order to not exceed scholarship money allocation (Cant spend money on out of state tuition for a scholarship) until I heard Coach Wauk on Big Al earlier this week.

That is amazing.

And put up 60 on them the last time we beat them. That used to be the only way to beat them; outscore them in a shootout. Now all we need is to score in the mid 20’s and we can’t do it.
