Watching JMU fans experience pure joy last night over a huge win for their program, got me to thinking when is the last time Spider fans have experience pure joy over a huge basketball win.

The Wisconsin win two years ago was big, but it was on a neutral court over the holidays. Our comeback win over VCU where TJ hit the shot to take it into overtime was probably the last time. That was what 5 years ago, now.

It's been a long long time.

When was the last time either UVA or VA Tech played UR? When was the last time either team came to the Robins Center?
I am pretty sure UVA thought they were going to beat JMU easily. Neither team looked good.

This was a makeup game from Covid last season when UVA was due to open their new arena. I don't think UVA will be going to JMU often at all, it was more of a courtesy. If U of R opened a new bball arena we'd be more likely to get them back too. That said we should be playing UVA & Tech with a little more regularity regardless.

can't speak to how good either team played, although JMU looks better than us and beat us head to head in scrimmage.

Last game vs UVA = March 2008 CBI tournament loss in Charlottesville
Last win vs UVA = 1997 2OT season opener at home

Last game vs VT = Jan 2009 at Blacksburg
Last win vs VT = Jan 2008 at home

The past is bright.

I can't stand JMU, but over the past few years respect their athletics department. They want to win, and have. They crushed us the last 5 or 6 years in football, qualify for the playoffs every year, and routinely make deep runs in the playoffs. They have also been to the NCAA tournament since we have and just opened a new arena. It would be nice if we cared about winning at UR and quit accepting excuses.

JMU had a UR like scoring issue in the first half. UVA was up 10-2 with about 13 minutes to go in first half. Then was losing 24-11 with 1 minute left in half. They scored 1 point in 12 minutes. And give JMU credit - they were able to hold on for the victory.

UVA is not very good this year, but would have been good to get on the schedule if we could. They will win some games in the ACC based on their slow style, defense, and Bennett. But as you can see they struggle on offense.

Also will be interesting to see how JMU winds up in the CAA. They are 9-2, beat UVA, Mason, and ODU. And also have wins in neutral site vs. Wright State and Murray State (no idea if they are any good). But given rumors we heard about our scrimmage and now this - sounds like could be a good year for JMU.

They did not visit after we revamped the Robins Center. Each school has played VCU more recently. I am wondering if they see us a peer school that they do not want to lose to.

am I correct that JMU can't get the auto CAA bid since they are leaving? If so, they are going to pretty much have to run the table and pray.

Would that be the Times Dispatch Invitational Tournament that happened around Christmas? Had a lot of good times there.
It was the replacement much later for a year or two. But only a double header, no tournament...

Recently - given our lack of success the last 10 years, we are seen as a school that would be a bad loss, but beating us doesn't help your resume. VCU on the other hand - being a tourney team almost every year - doesn't hurt you too much if you lose to them, but will help if you beat them.

As nice as the RC revamping was that is not close to the same thing as a brand new arena . It's why they played JMU.

Actually just 6-2. 8-2 if u count the NAIA and D3 wins vs. Carlow and Eastern Mennonite. So...6-2.

That said they are pretty good.

It has been a while but we have had those kind of wins(regular & post season. X, Navy, Cuse, etc. C

Other than beating VCU at home, the only other celebratory-crowd win I remember in the Mooney Era was when we beat UMass that random year maybe seven years ago or so when they were grossly over-ranked at like 13th in the country. They subsequently reverted to UMASS form and didn't make the NCAAS.

Richmond Times Dispatch Invitational was terrific because the four teams were treated equally. Recent history has the Hokies and Hoos only playing us at their advantage. Either we play there with no return game at Robins or a two for one deal. The height of the advantaged thinking was the CBI game when in the waning moments KA was knocked to the court by Singletary and the refs called nothing. It was obvious the CBI refs were "influenced" that UVA advancing was better for the tournament. Also as already mentioned there is really nothing for the Hoos and Hokies to gain by playing us. The only thing that really worked was when UVA played several of their "home" games at Robins Center against other opponents. The upside for us was they also played us. In fact the last game we beat them at Robins was I think considered a home game for them when Chris Fleming went on a 3 binge. Of interest in all time games played the Hokies are our 5th most common opponent and Virginia is 16th. With today's dynamic hard to imagine playing either one soon unless our paths cross in postseason play which doesn't have high odds.

I think you are mixing up Chris Fleming future UR head coach with Rick Houston. Both could shoot it tho.

Also remind me why was UVA using the Robins Center...was something going on with University Hall at the time?

Totally correct it was Rick Houston: Fleming played from 91 to 93 and was long gone! The dynamic with UVA was not about UHall but their attendance was down and Craig Littlepage, then AD, thought it would help fire up their Richmond area fans if they played a home game or two in Richmond at Robins. Dave Leitao was their coach and had a mediocre record. And A+ for the future UR head coach optimism about Fleming!

Personally, a double whammy. Dislike the Dillweeds. Love the Hoos.

Was set to be one until UR offered a scholarship late in the game. No regrets. Spiders will forever be my team! Still Hoos remain special to me and see almost as many of their games as ours. (They care about athletics, we pretend to, so a breath of fresh air).

Hate that the Dillweeds beat them in a rebuilding year.
