Jacob Gilyard: "It Bothers Me a lot"

I feel for Gilyard. He is the one guy I don't want to lose from this team. He has the heart of a champion. Just not enough talent or leadership in our program to overcome right now. Not enough is an understatement.

Gilyard in today's RTD:

"I don't want fans to have the perception that 'Jacob Gilyard' is a loser' or 'Jacob Gilyard can't win'"

"It bothers me a lot".

Hang in there, buddy. We know. Help is (better be) on the way.
Kendall Anthony and ShawnDre' Jones probably felt the same way. Mooney has had some fine guards that never sniffed the NCAA.

I felt so bad for Kendall Anthony when he could not get to play in an NCAA. I felt like it was that guys destiny and it was a staple of our program. Now Mooney has just demolished hope.

I hope we can hire a very very good coach for next year. I do think Jacob could go 2 years in a row if we get a new coach (must be one endorsed by 23) and a grad transfer and another study recruit to add to Burton. We can do it. Hope Hardt had a good convo with PQ.

I would love to see Gilly have that KA type moment against Vandy. Clock winding down, whole world watching, score tied, round of 32. Gilyard slices between two 6'9 defenders from Texas Tech and banks in the tear drop as an 11 year old boy in Ljubljana, Slovenia jumps for joy as the Spiders advance to the Sweet 16!!

Won't happen with moon. Please PQ, I promise to play nice and will make a contribution to the practice facility.

I also like how he cares what the fans think. We all know what Mooney thinks about the fans of the team, as he still hasn't answered JOC's question. He couldn't answer a similar question last year either.

Can we make Gilyard our damn coach for the rest of the year? He couldn't do any worse.

What was JOC's question to Mooney?

I'd rather have Gilyard, Golden and Cayo. Sal too. I like Woj. I think Gustavson can develop under good coach, and intrigued to see the transfer and recruit.

We need:
1) Decisive action on the coaching front resulting in a top notch hire.
2) A little bit of roster re-tooling while keeping some of the key guys. This includes a 6'8" grad transfer that has some athletic ability and can play. Heck I'll take a little smaller like the guy that we sent to Xavier.
3) A new attitude and new coach can work wonders. If we don't have a ton of attrition, we could have a huge bounce back year next season.

Would rather have Golden.
If a player announced they were leaving at the end of the season, how many of them would garner any interest from similar or greater programs to us. I see 3: Golden, Gilyard, and Cayo. Golden is the only one that would garner significant BCS interest. Gilly, I think could play at a BCS program but his height is going to scare most of them off.

Woj might get a lower level mid-major (like a Siena type program) interest.
Grace is D-2
Andre is probably D-2 or going back to Finland to play.
Verbinskis is D-2.
Sal might get some lower mid major offers, where he could sit out his transfer year and gain some weight and muscle.

No one on this board loses any sleep over anyone leaving except Golden, Gilyard, and Cayo.

I don't think Grace or Gustavsson are D2. I think Grace can hang around as a 10 minute guy backing up center. He's ok on D and not a horrible liability on O.

Andre is athletically not a D2 guy. He is clearly suffering from some level of indecision and/or misunderstanding what he should do. He is athletically capable of driving/finishing and staying in front of his man on D. Those are things a coach can work with. Don't know about his outside shot, haven't seen him take enough to know if it's an asset or liability.

I haven't but he is kind of stuck with us next year, even if he wanted to leave. He would essentially have to sit out 2 years in a row if he decided to transfer to play one year. Whereas, he could play next year, and then have a grad year transfer year the following year, which I think is the option he will take (if god forbid, Mooney is somehow our coach 2 years from now).

I think our only fear of someone transferring is Cayo, Golden, Gilyard, and Sherod.

I don't think Sherod will have many options coming off the injury. He would likely have to move down or could possibly move up and get very limited minutes or none at all, but think they would only take him as a grad transfer for 1 year and not sure if he will graduate at the end of this year.
Cayo - he might have a shot given the right school. He has shown some really nice athleticism in some games. And his inability to shoot at all from outside does not make him a good fit for Mooney system, but I could see him fitting in elsewhere on the same level as an A10 program or possibly moving up to be a role player on a potential NCAA team.
Gilyard - biggest threat to leave. Only thing that hurts him moving up is size. So think he will have some options if he wants them and would be a lateral transfer in terms of conference or possibly moving up if a school has an opening.
Golden - although he has put up good numbers, I just don't much of a market for Golden and his best bet to keep putting up good numbers is at UR. He is not very athletic, decent shooter, has a few good moves - but don't think he does well moving up a league against bigger more athletic big men. He could transfer down and be a stud on a lower division team in hopes of winning the league to make the NCAA - but that is a big risk. I think he stays put.

Think two biggest risks are Gilyard and Cayo at this point. We lose just one of them - we are in a hole for next year. I would wonder if Hardt will wait and see if anyone leaves right after the season is over to determine if Mooney stays. If no one leaves - he keeps Mooney. If one of these top guys leaves - then get rid of Mooney because we are going to lose again next year and if we are going to do that - might as well do it with new coach who is building program for future.

I get the point of this, but I really hate the public discussion/speculation of our players transferring (especially when they aren't indicating that they want to). I really don't think any good comes of it.

Disclaimer: I fully realize that these guys aren't making transfer decisions because they saw it on here. They can and do make these decisions for a ton of reasons that are more important than message board discussion. Just saying I think we may have the ability to negatively contribute (even if it's unintended) to the situation with the way rumors and "fake news" can spread in 2019.

Thread started out with Gilyard's comment...don't have access to the RTD article....Gilyard will be playing in his home state Wednesday night and am sure he does not want to be perceived poorly there or anywhere else............

Yes.

That just isn't a way to run the program, or any business for that matter.
I agree - I don't think this is the best option, but ultimately I think the decision to get rid of Mooney or keep Mooney will come down to money, and this shows we are not committed to athletics. Schools that are committed would have made this decision last year and figured out the money later.

While this may ultimately prove to be the case at the end of this season, I still think you’re oversimplifying thst it was a financial decision. Hardt was in a tough position having been here such a short period of time that it would have been extraordinarily difficult to make that call.

I don’t think you should presume we aren’t committed based on that evidence. Lots of other evidence perhaps though.

Isn't Golden same situation as Sherod?

Regardless if you relieve Mooney as coach early odds are you get a new coach in earlier. Gives him more time to sell all players on style, approach, energy etc. The kids are home by end of April. Not a lot of time.

Also if Mooney was kept and we did poorly to average next year, Sherod and Golden are sure things to grad transfer with new coach coming in March 2020. But make coach switch this year and coach gets 1 year to prove why they should stay, assuming it is less likely those two transfer this offseason with the redshirt years used already. Bottom line...if transfers are in any way a factor by Hardt, and they really shouldn't be - even tho I would hate to lose our best players - but if it is a factor well more reason for a new coach, b/c I believe that actually increases our odds or keeping the most and best guys.

I feel the country gets cheated not getting to see guards like Kendall and Jacob play in the NCAA

Jacob was awesome. very happy he had a game like that in his home state with family and friends there. expected nothing less.

Grant was awesome too. I got a kick out of watching Ford's frustration at halftime, noting that they couldn't stop the baseline spin move that they've been watching on tape and talking about for 2 days. I only coached youth hoops, but I know that feeling.

Nathan was his standard excellent, efficient self. added an early jumper which was shockingly smooth.

I know Bess scored a ton, but man he hit some bombs. their whole team hit some difficult shots. it's not like we just caught them on a bad day.

French is a load and a heck of an athlete. but I have no idea how a guy that physically gifted can be that bad a foul shooter. it literally makes sense to use your entire bench to foul him every possession. it would be the equivalent of that team shooting 36% from the field with no 3's. you can't win like that.

Shame. KA was a force. I liked watching him play. Special guys like him are always fun to watch.

There is too much talent on the roster to have had this heinous result. I can't see how it could possibly be anyone's fault but Mooney. Get rid of the guy and do it quickly.

What? You're saying Mooney has a system???? Do tell.
