Hampton Game Thread

So Mooney learned a few things tonight.
1. When you don't play your bench and you have injuries, you become really out of sync.
2. Your defense has lost its ability for a couple of years to stop the dribble drive. You need to diversify your defense.
3. We learned that our greatest realization came true, your recruiting is marginal at best. We have little depth and you now are
forced to take your lumps and let these kids learn.

I knew we were in trouble without Jake Gilyard, much less Sherod. Jake W. had a bad shooting night and we need his scoring to
have a chance in this situation. Still shooting little over 50% with our foul shooting is ludicrous. If Sherod is out all season and Gilyard is limited, this will be a much longer season then we already are facing.
Again we were getting our butts kicked before Sherod went down remember that when injuries become the excuse of the day

I was impressed with Gustavson. I think he and Sal have a lot of promise

Agree on both of them. Gust looks smart on the court. Cayo appears to have taken that step of being aggressive on the offensive end so give Sal as many minutes as possible to speed up the growth process.

If Jacob and probably Nick can't go next game, I would be comfortable with a 5 of GG, Cayo, Sal with Woj and Gust as the guards. Feel for JJ but both those guys appear better at handling the ball then him. Yates and Grace are at best subs so keep them in that role.

Exactly.

We're at the point that we have difficulty with Longwood & Hampton. Never thought in all my years of watching Spider Basketball that would be the case.

I left the game with 3 minutes left. I feel awful for the players. They hustled, but Hampton looked pretty decent with two top notch guards.

This is Mooney's team. These are his players, and this many years into his tenure, this shouldn't be the case. Things happen - injuries, transfers, recruiting misses for whatever reason. But at this point we should be a team with depth to cover situations and put a quality team on the floor. We are now making movement in the wrong direction, and this has been a systemic problem. Repeat - This is Mooney's Team, and he needs to own it. How much longer will the powers that be let us head south?

Wow... please think about it mooney...

His whole press conference was excuses; kids are injured, kids are young, etc etc. That’s the problem with our program right now, no accountability. Mooney needed to come out and say “I sucked. I didn’t put players in a position to win. I failed them and I’ll be working my butt off to not fail them they way I just did.”

Or something along those lines...

"Let me think about it?" Really, that was his best answer? This was his opportunity to say something to the fans and that what his response? How about, "This is unacceptable and I hold my self responsible" or "I need to re-evaulate my approach and see what changes I can make going forward" or "I know the fans are disappointed but I promise we will make the adjustments needed to start winning again"

I mean come on. I get Mooney doesn't want to say something he may regret in a time where he is likely frustrated. But he couldn't even give a general response? This is not the type of behavior I expect from a coach who should be the leader of our team. Very disappointed with his response

This is nothing new if you are paying any attention.

I would respect him more if he said something like “John, I don’t give a flying F about the fan base as long as the checks keep coming in” - that would at least be the truth.
Not some BS, I’m better than you response that he gave to literally the only person that writes about our program that isn’t paid by UR.

Let me sum it up for you Mooney. You suck as a coach, recruiter and leader therefore the Spider basketball program is in the dumpster. How hard was that?

I don't blame him for not answering that question. I trust that Mooney hates losing just as much as anyone (agreed - the bank account makes it much easier to sleep at night even after a loss) - but it is not his duty to give a state of the program for the fans 15 minutes after an embarrassing loss and two of his best players are currently injured. He now has to gameplan for the next game with a 5 man rotation and is probably already thinking that in his head. Not to mention - he knows he is on the hot seat. So I don't blame him for his answer and believed he showed great restraint because that question might have caused some coaches to go off on a tirade.

This year will be worse than the 4-22 back in the late 1970s.

JOC finally starting to probe a bit. That clearly wasn't a softball Q because he couldn't answer it. He stumbled then bailed to let me think about it because he doesn't have an answer.

F this program. I'm not setting one foot inside the RC until that clown is gone.

Better answers:

"No, I have no message for the fans."
"Are you talking about the #realfans in Section 5 or those that sit up in the rafters?"
"They've had a hard life. They will feel like a champion if they snack on some Wonderful Pistachios."

Or, "we share their pain and continue to work hard every day to improve our play and success".

Trap, you are better man than I. After 14 years, I don't understand what he needs to think about when it comes to the state of HIS program. Either he doesn't know, unfathomable, or he is embarrassed to say, almost a certainty.

We didn't lose much when Sherod went down, he's been sleepwalking through the whole season anyway. But I am sorry he's hurt.

JJ needs to take a seat at the end of the bench until next year.

This game was even worst than Longwood, at least we had a lead in that game.

No more anger or hysteria from me. Apathy has taken total control...

Meanwhile down on Broad St they are having "knee slapping" laughter.

Not so much, that didn't work out to well for us last year when you were similarly struggling early. ( I think you looked much different in your losses last year than this- better and more dangerous) Anyway, injuries and losses related to them is nothing to celebrate even with rivals. I hope that Nick hears good news tomorrow.

Andre was the only one that gave a good answer. Mooney has never gave a state of the program, he has always been a smug PQ protected snob since he got the contract. Big EFF you to the fan base.

everyone can see how Andre is tough player , I know you all can feel intensity from one answer he gives. Some people are fighters of life. It is hard to make not a fighter person into a fighter. He is fighter I think. Players can lead more by actions Coaches more by words. I still am hoping for best.

Perhaps. A state of the program in the last 5 years or so may have been good though.

Fezz I agree about Andre, he came in determined and ready to play.

Now work your magic and recruit us some more Europeans who have that kind of grit.

I completely disagree with this. You are basically saying Mooney can't walk and chew gum at the same time by answering a simple, straight forward question that ANY coach should expect to get asked when things are not going well. It is not even a difficult question to answer.

He could have easily said something to the effect of: "I know our fans are disappointed and upset about the start of this season and last season. Trust me, I and my entire staff are just as frustrated but I can promise you we are going to work our behinds off to do all that we can to get this program back where it needs to be, competing and winning A-10 championships and NCAA bids".

The fact that he couldn't say that off the top of his head is very telling indication of his leadership abilities. Real leaders inspire, take accountability, and LEAD. His answer is a microosm of all that is wrong with our program and its leadership. And I bet you $20 bucks and Ulla's ranch that he is NOT going to get back to JOC with his answer.

No kidding. That lack of response should totally piss off any remaining fans he has. This is a complete disaster. We MUST be vocal from here on out.

One of the callers this morning challenged Bob to follow up on JOC's question tonight. "Now that you've had 24 hours to think about it......?"

He obviously missed out on the cliche lessons at coaching school. That question to Mooney about a message to the fans was tailor made for the cliche answer. Even the Crash Davis "give it my best shot and good lord willing things will work out" would have been acceptable.

Mooney can give a cliche answer if he needs to do. I think his non-answer was an intentional one. I think he sees the fan base as the people who are making his life miserable right now and he does not feel the need to address their issues because he personally is fed up with them.

I say quit bringing players out to suffer through the "losing" post game interview. The head man should take the heat.

Ok to bring them out following a win, but totally inappropriate to make them publicly suffer following a bad loss. No gain for anybody.

Tough one for Hampton last night. Pirarates drop a 2OT thriller to the Norfolk State Spartans.
