School hires firm to help find new AD

Virginia Common­wealth University Presi­dent Michael Rao an­nounced Friday that a search firm, Carr Sports Consulting LLC, has been hired to identify and eval­uate candidates to become the school’s next athletic director.

Rao also announced the members of a search com­mittee and an advisory committee to assist the search firm.

VCU is looking to re­place Norwood Teague, who is leaving to become the AD at Minnesota.

David Benedict, who is serving as the interim AD, enjoys strong support and certainly will be a candi­date. Benedict, who joined the athletic department in 2010, has been serving as the executive associate athletic director.

Rao said the process would be expeditious.

The 18-member adviso­ry committee will assist in identifying criteria for the AD and issues for the fu­ture success of the athlet­ics program.

The nine-member search committee will se­lect candidates for inter­views and recommend up to four finalists to Rao. Richard O. Bunce, the se­nior advisor to the presi­dent, will serve as the com­mittee chairman.

Also on the committee are David Boardman, chief executive officer of Dy­namic Brands; John Dos­well, vice rector of the board of visitors; Mike El­lis, associate athletic direc­tor; Sofia Hiort-Wright, as­sociate athletic director for academic support and as­sociate dean for student services; Joseph Marolla, vice provost for instruction and NCAA faculty athletics representative; Stuart Sie­gel, member of the board of visitors; Shaka Smart, men’s basketball coach; and Beverly Warren, pro­vost and vice president for academic affairs.
