Is it Russ or is it our Administration?

The problem is that Hardt is just a bad AD. I’m sorry - I know he kisses the ass of some of the posters here so I get that some of you like him. He made a lazy hire in Huesman. There was no creativity in thought to dig in and find a gem. For example, he could have taken a shot on Will Healy. If we move on from Huesman (which I doubt we do), Hardt would have to hire the next person. I have zero confidence in that hire. In fact, I’d bet heavily he’d hire the football coach from Bucknell.

I’m not saying that Russ is the right hire. I just don’t think we’d do any better so better to waste $500k/year on him than waste $1M paying both Russ and another poor hire. We need to clean it all out to have any hope to win again.

Plus we have a university president that never mentions UR Athletics! It looks like he could care less about UR sports!

Not particularly interested in defending Hardt, but he wasn’t here for the Huesman hire. That was a Gill decision.

You're right I was checking dates to make sure my memory was correct. Russ hired 12-14-16, Gill was AD from 11-2-12 to 6-30-17 David Walsh was interim after Gill.

Damn...my apologies to Hardt then. Doesn’t change my confidence level in him though.

Aside from the quarterly visit to the Black and Drew show to discuss building projects, has anyone observed Jabba making any effort to engage our fanbase whatsoever?

We are what’s left of the fan base. Has he talked to any of the few of us here?

Hardt was still at Bucknell when Russ was hired.

Our real AD was on the sidelines for both football home games this year. Didn’t notice Hardt.

Think about it...we only scored one touchdown, posted only 14 first downs (least in first four games), and had our lowest rushing output of the season (65 yards) against Fordham (remember, we had 240 yards on the ground against Boston College). And this comes with two full weeks to prepare for the Rams.

Note: I won't even bother to address the woes on the defense (Huesman's forte')

Either the coaches can't....or the players won't. In either case, there's one person responsible for the on-the-field product.

Walsh hired Huesman. He had the relationship with him from before. Gill wasn't here when Huesman was the first time.

Never been more apathetic about the program over the past 25 years than I am now. I didn’t even attend as a Ft undergrad and I use to follow this team in college hours away every weekend. I can hardly motivate myself to drive 25 minutes to the stadium to watch this. It doesn’t help we have an atmosphere of a single A baseball team where it doesn’t seem to matter to but a handful of fans who wins the game. It’s mostly parents just using cheap entertainment dollars wisely.

At least when we went 3-8, 4-7 we were losing close games to very good opponents during the Reid era (maybe with the exception of his final year) and you had a feeling they would be turning it around. It’s just hard to watch right now. I support the players, but they don’t seem very motivated or confident in their body language. I don’t know if it’s youth, lack of talent, lack of coaching/leadership or a combination of all three. Watching Dave Clawson go 5-0 today sure made me feel nostalgic about the past and hope one day we can return to the level of respect he helped usher to our program.

If Hardt could coach, recruit, throw the ball, play defense, and star on special teams
we’d be great. Is that what you all are saying?

Right now our football program joins our basketball program as The Dumpster Fire of its conference!

This is what infuriates me more than anything about Richmond athletics. Instead of using athletics as a tool to build pride among alumni, they have turned it into the playground area at Chick-fil-a.

Agree Mo. The reason our attendance and atmosphere sucks is that we don’t win enough in the 2 big sports (football and men’s basketball). Losing has been accepted in the basketball program for years and it appears football is currently following in those footsteps. The athletic department needs to quit handing out free or reduced priced tickets and address the on field/court product. Win more and the attendance and atmosphere will take care of themselves.

This can be a positive as well considering our current state of competitiveness. I missed the entire second quarter of the Elon game waiting in the face painting line with my 6 year old.

Who needs good football when there’s craft beer, fireworks, bounce houses and free tickets for kids?

Assuming Russ got a 5 year contract at about $450k per year in December of 2016, we'd have 2 years to eat if we cut bait in late November/early December. Would any assistants be under contract too?

Looks like roughly a million bucks to change course. Is Hardt confident he wont be in the situation in 12 months? Assuming not, we are about to find how much much 500k matters to Hardt.

I see our absolute ceiling at 4-8 if we really get our butts in gear.

Do u think we’d have to eat the full value of his contract? I don’t know but if so we are doing buyouts completely wrong. That assumption about Mooney contract is made too, that a buyout would mean owing him everything remaining on his contract. Which means there is no “buyout” at all.

Maybe at this level you have to. And in past there definitely have been contracts at various levels where u owe it all if dismissed without cause. But not the norm. Or at least most schools have smartened up there. FBS schools may have big buyouts but they r still far from full value. Heck even the government can buy out long term civil employees.

Anyway hopefully a buyout of either Huesman or Mooney if that decision is made is a true buyout & we would owe less, especially since they r much closer to the end of their deals. That’s how a good admin would structure. But since this is UR it probably means we owe every last cent.

Ironic since Jabba the Hardt is a self described “meat and potatoes” guy.

the real question if no one is held accountable for a game like yesterday , does it really matter? that was horrible , does anyone think fordham was really better? if so i dont see it, is this what the football program has become now? i would have bet money they would not lose yesterday , why i dont bet i guess. just curious who could be on there list if they did make a move , got to be someone better out there

I know a lot of people are understandably upset at the last two years of under performing basketball but IMO this is much worse and the program are in two entirely different places and are exclusive from each other. I see light at the end of tunnel in basketball, all I see is a freight train coming from the other side when it comes to football. The players play hard for Mooney even when we struggle, I don't see that in this team. It was our 2nd or 3rd game of 2017, I remember losing the game cant remember the opponent. I was listening on the radio to RH interview at halftime and he sounded completely off the rails just yelling and screaming. If I was a player there is no way I would feel confident in his abilities to put us in the best position to win. Rocco burned down the house so I could manage to give him a pass his first year despite having boat loads of talent. Since 2005 we have had 2 losing seasons (2011 was bound to happen) and look well on our way to a 3rd. I think its going to get worse before it gets better and I hope like hell I'm wrong. No offense to the QB play, but under RH its the worst its ever been since the early 2000s when we never passed the ball. As mentioned earlier, I cant tell if its the QB or the coaching or both, but the play there is a smack to the face to Stacey Tutt, Eric Ward, Will Healy, John Laub, Aaron Corp, Michael Strauss and Rocco, and Kyle Lauletta. If we look like we did the last two games the rest of the season its time to move on. I hope I'm just overreacting but I don't like what I see.

You see a light at the end of the tunnel for basketball? After a decade of Mooney and millions of dollars you see a light at the end of a tunnel? How long is this tunnel?

Granted I'm not as involved with the team as some others here, but who are the on-field leaders on this team?

After Strauss and Lauletta, our QBs don't seem to inspire a lot of confidence. Haven't seen that "put the team on my back" attitude from KJ, Mancuso or English. On defense, I remember Sidbury being pretty intolerant of mistakes, and there were several other natural leaders on that top-level team from the Clawson-London years.

There are a lot of underclassmen and transfers on this team. While I'm sure they have bonded, and certain parents have chimed in on that aspect, they haven't been together as a team for very long - and they sure look it.

I expect Hardt is up in the president's box schmoozing potential/current boosters, where he belongs. Athletic directors don't belong on the sideline during football games, on the bench at basketball games, or in the dugout at baseball games.

Just out of curiosity. How's Crutcher doing in his primary job... which I assume is fund raising?

Founded in 1830 as a Baptist school called Dunlora Academy, University of Richmond was shut down during the Civil War and only reopened in 1866 thanks to a $5,000 donation by tobacconist James Thomas, Jr. In 1969, the university was saved yet again, this time by a $50 million gift from alumnus and pharmaceutical millionaire E. Claiborne Robins. Another large gift from the Robins family of $175 million established the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business, one of the most highly regarded programs of the university today. University of Richmond’s current endowment is $2.511 billion.

A little unrelated but what happened to Brissett? Thought he went to UVA but haven’t seen him. Did he get hurt?

Wow. Timing is everything. As soon as I send that he makes a catch for UVA.

still, awfully quiet.

What was his goal with transferring to UVa? Did he just want a year of big time football, or was he hoping to get noticed by NFL scouts? If his objective is pro ball, then he made a big mistake. He would have gotten lots of touches here both receiving and returning. The grass ain't always greener.
