We stink. Again. Why? Is it Russ or is it the 'vision' stuff Danny talked about? Genuine topic being hotly discussed in the lot tonight.

I am just about done with football too. Tell me why it is about to get better.

We are headed for another 4 win season sadly.JAX,Fordham,Albany,?

6-5,4-7,4-8 ain’t gonna cut it.Russ’ seat got warm tonight

Elon played tough(like their coach),no mistakes, scouted us Top to bottom and surgically moved the ball against us.Our corners and safeties still do not play the ball.

Hardt being a football guy can see there is a problem.Russ doesn’t have a Daddy like Mooney..Not sure of the solution. This is not good for Russ or his coordinators. We look like a rag-tag,disorganized Patriot League Team.We lacked fire and proper preparation.

Playing in front of an near empty stadium beginning mid 3Q shows a fundamental apathy for the product on the field.

Embarrassing.

Agree. Remember at the end of last season Russ made it clear "there will be changes, big changes." Unfortunately the changes to the staff missed the mark. As poorly coached a team as we have seen in many, many years.

Yes.

Part of it is cyclical. Any minor (or major) drop in talent, coaching or both in the CAA spells trouble. It takes a while to dig out of that hole.
Part of it is coaching. Unable to make the playoffs with a NFL caliber QB on your team is not a good start to your career and following it up with 4-7 isnt so hot.
Part of it is administration. If this slide continues I don't foresee any jolts to revitalize the program from the top.

I'm just kind of numb to it now. I don't think I have ever been so apathetic about the football program I grew up loving as a kid and would schedule virtually everything in my life around. I don't think its just one thing. We are stagnant at best and I am not sure if/when this will stop. I feel like this is the new normal and it will be like this for a while.

It not like RH lit it up at UTC his first few years either, the only difference is their was no real history there and the only way to go was up. We are in the CAA and in VA you have to be on top of your game or JMU/WM will jump ahead in no time not to mention all the other teams in the conference.

It could be just one game, perhaps I am overreacting. We are like 4-8 in our CAA openers (0-3 under Huesman) so its not like this is a shocker.

Feel like I need to see more to know what is going on but certainly seems like the Admin is a major issue.

Perhaps the answer is that it’s both. My concern is “what’s next?” I have no faith we’ll find a better coach with this current group running the show.

Same. I want to blame Russ but I have no confidence that Hale, Hardt, the dopey a$$ Queally and The Cello Player can do any better.

We are in some real trouble here.

I love and respect our players. I respect our coaches and feel that they are up for the challenge. I like and respect John Hardt and the positive things I have seen him do.

Tonight, we are seeing the stark facts, as I see them, about our program:

1 - Joe Mancuso still makes mistakes that good quarterbacks don't make. Huesman said at the half that English only put seven points on the board in the first half. But English didn't throw the ball into the atmosphere twice when he could have run for the score, and then didn't throw back against his body over the middle where he couldn't see the coverage because of the defensive linemen rushing. We made enough mental mistakes on offense and defense in the first half to where it wasn't English's fault that we only put up seven points. I respectfully didn't agree with Russ on that comment.

2 - Why did Tristan Wheeler play so rarely tonight? And why did so many linebackers NOT break down and get faked out by the RBs? And what is this hands to the face crap? Twice?

3 - What were the defensive backs thinking tonight? I know that the QB had a quick release - but he and his receivers moved through us like a knife through butter. With all the coaches on our staff labeled "defensive" something or another, they better do an improved job of teaching our players on defending against the pass, especially since Elon has had the same offensive coordinator for a while.

4 - How can young men who are so academically sound make so many mental mistakes in one game? I thought I saw Charlie Brown in the press box saying, "Good grief!" It is a wonder that Huesman didn't have a stroke. Poor man.

5 - I still maintain that, when a coach leaves a school, there are many more reasons to leave than the fanbase realizes - even an educated fanbase like ours. When Rocco left, we were small and thin throughout the entire defense. He left us Lauletta - but he swung and missed at lots of good recruits in his last two years. We are still building our offensive and defensive lines and are still likely a year away from being good, especially if we leave Mancuso at quarterback. I would like to see better results. Two years ago, our defense couldn't stop squat in the first part of the season; but then we played Delaware into overtime, shut out Villanova at Villanova, and held JMU to the second fewest points in two-and-a-half years. I still believe that we will improve, and we will improve this year. But will we improve as much as we want? That remains the question.

So - that's my Two Cents. Feel free to disagree - but let's stick with our players and our coaches. Good things can still happen. Sometimes, they just don't happen when we want them to happen.

Outside of Men’s lacrosse, is there any program that is in better shape than it was 5 or 10 years ago?

That’s why I can’t lay it all on Russ. There seems to be much bigger issues.

Ferrum. It’s coaching. Poor tackling awful discipline on special teams no imagination on offense. No inspiration from top since Russ arrived staff must go

Stork - I want some of what you’re drinking. Not a criticism...I genuinely wish I could be more positive.

Maybe I just need a good nights rest

Huesman is in over his head. He's trying, but he doesn't know what to try. He's tried different players, different coaches, nothing works. He doesn't appear to be organized, and listening to him on the radio inspires zero confidence. I don't believe he's going to lead us when we want to go.

Really disappointing effort. We were outplayed in all aspects of the game. Defensively, we were awful. We need much better play in the secondary, fewer penalties, and much better tackling. I think we are a better team with 12 at QB, and I thought we missed him in the first half. He has the ability to throw the ball down the field.

Most concerning to me was how disorganized we looked. Spiders looked like a poorly coached, unorganized team. What the hell were we doing the last drive in the first half? And special teams are still awful. I want RH to succeed, but something is just off with the program. Very frustrating.

one thing is for sure no one could look at those two teams and think we were even close to being as well coached as they were.,we keep hearing the recruits being brought in have got better , but the same problems keep happening, coach russ looked like a beat man, during his post game talk, i am sure they are trying there best , no one wants to lose, as far as admin i am not in the loop enough to know what more they can do, but whats scary is the
thing what we thought was coming from the end of the tunnel wasnt really a light it was the train. talking to folks last night anger is on the verge of turning into apathy , not great after the third game , does anyone think this staff can fix it?

Team needs the bye week badly right now. Not in the know on what happened, but if I heard right we were missing two starting OL guys last night and one had to leave game. One LB was out or played sparingly.
Many of Rocco players who had a year left, decided to leave with a year they could have spent here, so I do believe there were personality issues from coach to coach and that is fine, but Deontez Thompson is the starter for Western Illinois and with the lose of X we could have used a senior RB rather than having to depend on RS freshman and true freshman at that position, even though they are really good.
I think this team has 40 something freshman and sophomores so it is young and they will make mistakes.
No giving up yet, as I think we have talent that needs developing.
That said giving up kickoff TD and fumbling on kickoff and giving up 14 points on those two mistakes alone is just plan terrible, with out those two mistakes the game is 28 to 20 and gets played in a completely different fashion.
Hoping we heal up and spend bye week cleaning up issues, we then have two games we should win and gain some confidence (I hope), after that there are no easy weeks (even Yale is good), so all those freshman and sophomores will have a little more game time and I hope they grow up fast.
Believe we have talent, they produced more offense than Elon last night and the mistakes turned it into a blow out, but it does look bad when every unit on the team was making mistakes. Russ and company have to coach them up and I think (maybe hope) they are capable of the task.

How about our punter?

1. I don’t understand when our DBs play 7-10 yards off their man and it is third and 3.
It is no challenge for QB to get the first down.

2. Play calling or execution or both?

3. We tackle poorly, allowing runner to pick up extra yards after being hit. Plus we were constantly giving up
5+ yards on first down.

4. If we have a good sophomore/frosh class, then play them, get them more experience.

The reason you play dbs off the receiver is because the coach doesn’t think they can run with the receiver in a man press defense. Did you see how Cheeks threw short every time to wide receivers when we played 7 yards off who then slipped feeble tackles and made big yards? When the dbs played up tight he went over the top. It was a seminar in how not to cover.

How about when Elon finally punted and our guy didn't call for a fair catch even though a defender was about six inches from him and leveled him on the spot... But because of a penalty they had to re-kick. This time, there was no one within 15 years of our returner and he called for a fair catch.

The poor tackling is infuriating to watch. We had the same issues last year...specifically in the secondary...and they haven't been fixed. It doesn't matter what play the other team runs when we can't tackle. Everything will work for them.

Poor tackling was the biggest issue. We look like a 5-7 team.

We got vertical in the passing game for the first time in the second half. As someone else said, Joe does things that good Qbs don’t do. He has four turnovers in 3 games so not much has changed there. Beau has been accurate and careful with the ball but we have yet to see him get vertical. Neither guy has seized the position. Maybe the freshman should be in the mix.

Whatever the reasons, something really stinks in the Robins Center. Seems like we’d be better to dump the whole lot in both revenue sports and get some young hot shots in place to inject some life into our athletic department.

On kickoffs, why doesn’t our kicker just kick the ball directly out of bounds? The opposing team would start on the 35 instead of the 50 yard line or scoring a touchdown.

The only strategy our defense seems to have is to leave every receiver wide open and try to confuse the QB as to which open receiver to throw the ball to.

If Russ couldn’t do it with 13 returning starters, a FCS quarterfinalist team and the best QB in program history what makes you think he can do it now? He’s OBVIOUSLY in over his head.
I agree. Russ was only 6-5 with a NFL QB and great receivers.

Defensively we are a sieve. That wasn't Boston College we played yesterday though you couldn't tell the difference. I do agree with Russ. We were in position to make plays, but just didn't. So the scheme wasn't bad; the execution was. And, my word, how many times did we shoot ourselves in the foot with penalties.

Offensively, we do not have the running backs to effectively run the ball in the RPO; they simply aren't big enough or fast enough to pose a threat (our quarterbacks again are leading the team in rushing). In the passing game, the 185 lb backs are virtually non-existent as blockers or passing options. We were a vertical offense with Kyle operating in the spread and I'll argue that we should still be given the small running backs.

I do constantly wonder why Russ would leave Chattanooga (his alma mater) to come here. While his brand of football might be Southern Conference-worthy (did anybody look at the schedules Huesman played while with the Mocs?) , it simply hasn't translated to the Colonial.

The best player on the team is Jake Larson, and I'm already afraid that we'll only have him for one season. I would love to know how every other school passed on this kid.

The malaise has spilled out of the Robins Center and into Robins Stadium when the football team is playing. Make Don Chemotti the head coach of football and basketball, in addition to his current position of head coach of men's lacrosse.
