any chance that some of the injured players may be able to return this week?

we've all read about those players who started the season starting, or with significant minutes, against UVA but have now been lost for the season...

does anyone have a list of names?

I can remember Collins, Goodall, Lauletta, Jones, Waller, Jordan, but that's about as far as I can get...can someone complete the list?

thanks...

Go Spiders!

Waller is the guy i'd love to get back. It's been close to a month now. It isn't the type of injury where he can't work out. Whenever he is cleared, he should be fit.

It was kind of strange they put a list of injured players on the big board during half time. I don't know if I'd ever seen that before.

He can work out, but he's had trouble eating. I hear he's lost a fair amount of weight.

So when you say 15 starters out, does that refer to 15 of the 22 to start the year? Or is it a starter went down then his subsequent replacement who became a starter then got injured as well?

Thanks Pike.

As relates to 'starters', We lost our first two running backs, our quarterback, a defensive lineman, a linebacker, a cornerback and a safety. The situation isn't as bleak as some would make it out to be, particularly now that we have a competent quarterback under center again.

Mo, I think that hits most of the injuries, and I agree it isn't as bad as some have said. But I think you can count a couple more.

From a position standpoint I think we have lost 6 starters:
QB, RB, DT, DE, CB, and SS - two of those are probably the two best players at their position in the entire FCS (QB and SS).

But we also lost a few players that stepped as starters from those injuries:
RB, QB (suspension - though I think we are better off with Johnson now), DT, as well as a few players that were in the rotation on the DL.

I heard Bob black mention that we lost 11 starters but that seems too many as I count 9 out of 6 positions.

Yes, and calling Deontez (NOT Deontrez) our #3 RB is a little disingenuous because it was always going to be a RBBC.

While not "starters" we lost several other regulars Nelson, Moore, Mathews, Drake. It seems pretty bad to me, especially on defense.

It definitely isn't good but it ain't 11 or 13 or 15 starters like some people seem to be saying.

Thanks Pike.

It's odd but I'd add losing QB/RB in Broadus. He got more playing time in both of those positions than our current starters when everyone was healthy.

The injuries show what a phenomenal job DR and staff has done building the Program. We are one of 16 teams left playing despite the injuries, and I love the matchup against UND. They don't have a very good pass defense but have been opportunistic with turnovers. Also, we have probably the best offensive and defensive lines (despite the injuries) that they have seen all year.

Given that injuries have decimated the team, we may want to seriously look at the impact that hiring a top-notch athletic trainer (AT) could have on our win-loss record.

Urban Meyer, when he was at Florida had a great one, and won two national championships with very few injuries. Now that Meyer is at Ohio State, he took his AT with him, and he is contending for a national championship again, with very few injuries. Anyone who does not connect injuries to the AT staff has is or her head in the turf. It is possible to avoid injuries, either by recruiting guys who never get hurt or by hiring great ATs who can help to avoid injuries.

Not ALL injuries can be avoided, but the number of injuries we have seen this season COULD have been avoided with top-notch ATs. Look around at the top programs and their ATs. Look at what Urban Meyer is paying his AT. Is it close to $400,000? Avoiding injuries is just as controllable as other player development, and we can do much better in this regard than we have to date. Before we can have an impact on injuries though, we have to believe one thing: They are not just "accidents" that are unavoidable. ATs do make a huge difference, but not if you don't believe they will.

Are you suggesting that hiring the best medical and strength and conditioning sports staff that are available on a budget is what we should so?

Really novel idea.

I don't know how many ACLs can be prevented by trainers. Maybe different types of
turf fields would be a better preventer.

No matter what AT staff a team has, you can't prevent all injuries, but there are a lot of medical articles that point to preventing non-contact ACL/knee & ankle injuries. Several of our key players went down with non-contact injuries making a change of direction on turf. That needs to be addressed.

Would love to have the City Stadium natural grass over in RS. That was a great field.
It's definitely better on the players' bodies, but most of our opponents fields are turf. The program has to figure out how to reduce/prevent these non-contact injuries.

"Back in my day" City Stadium had the astroturf so thin we played in sneakers. I was so happy when they put in the grass, and was surprised we didn't do that on campus.

Now "get off my (grass) lawn."

laulette's was in Williamburg, should they change their turf too. We have higher priorities for the budget.

NOT suggesting changing the turf. The medical articles discuss training programs that prevent/reduce non-contact ligament injuries, like the one Lauletta suffered. Turf is hard on the body, but it can be overcome with proper training. I am suggesting that the training program make some changes to help prevent these injuries.

Yes that field was great.

Ironically for the benefit of one donors pet sport so that we could host the NCAA soccer tournament.

Stewart is among the best strength and conditioning guys in the business. A guy of his quality is in high demand. Injuries happen...strength and conditioning won't help fluke injuries such as broken jaws and ACL tears. The guys that are playing are all in top shape. To suggest that the guys who went down with tears were not in top shape is ludicrous.

You're right, strength and condition won't help fluke injuries. I'm pretty sure there was no suggestion that training can prevent all injuries and certainly not broken jaws. I'm also not suggesting there's anything wrong with the current staff. Simply stating that there is a lot of research that suggests specific training (plyometrics yoga, etc) can help reduce/prevent non-contact ligament injuries. I saw Lauletta go down. It was a change of direction and planting. It wasn't contact. If the program doesn't incorporate specific injury prevention, they should certainly consider it. That is all.

Hamstring strength is key for ACL stability. Other than having strong flexible hamstrings there's not much you can do other than cross your fingers.

Even if Jones was now healthy, he hasn't practiced in a couple months. He wouldn't be a help for us in this game. Only chance we see him is Frisco, IMO.

DJ prepping for pro day, will not be back of healed. Don't blame him,me cannot risk another injury.

Honestly, the value to our program of having him in the league is greater than whatever he can contribute after 2 months on the sideline. Mack and Coniker are doing a fine job back there. Johnson too.

Amazing what this team is doing without Collins, Goodall, Jones, Jordan, Lauletta and Waller. I think it is safe to say these guys are all major talents and two of them were conference offensive and defensive preseason player of year picks. Great job by our guys of stepping up big time in their absence.
