What would it look like?

here is my crack at it.

1 - Kevin Anderson starts, Kenny Atkinson and Greg Beckwith are subs (sorry K0 and CL)
2 - Bobby McCurdy, Curtis Blair
3 - Johnny Newman, Greg Stevenson, Tony Dobbins(def specialist)
4 - TJ Cline, Pete Woolfolk, Mike Perry
5 - Justin Harper

I need another big guy to round out the roster. Thinking I need someone 6'10 or greater as a 5. Kevin Steenberge, Eric Poole, etc?

Or do I just add another nasty #4? Or do we roll the dice with a smaller line up and buy shares of David Gonzalvez as a 2?

For honorable mention, I like Kenny Wood, Terry Connoly, and Jim Shields. Shields was MVP of the CAA tourney and carried us into the NCAA's. Woody and TC were tough and versatile.

I would add Winiecki as the big man, he was POY in the conference as a senior correct?

Winiecki was first team all-CAA as a senior. Blue Edwards was POY.

What about a $15 dollar team? Could someone craft one of these with Spider greats?

Like the OP's line-up, would definitely add Mike Winiecki as the other 5. However, McCurdy was not really a 2, and I think we would need to find a spot for Aaron Stewart.

I can't comment too intelligently on anything that happened pre-Dooley, but the lineup from URFan2 seems pretty legit to me, with Winiecki in there. I'd love to find a spot for Ungerer, too, because he could do so many things and was probably the best passer I have seen in 20+ years watching.

I can't comment anything pre-Dooley either but add me a vote for me for Gonzo. He was tough as nails. Also, Harper is not a 5, he barely was a 4, despite his height, he played more like a 3. Not that Harp doesn't deserve to be on there, but just not as a center.

Speaking of 5's, no love for Geriot, given our shortage of 5's?

I have only been watching spider basketball since I was about 6 and I only remember well past the age of 10 but here's my lineup: PG-Kevin Anderson, SG-Gonzalvez, SG-Darien Brothers, PF-Justin Harper, C-TJ Cline, sixth man-Kendall Anthony, other bench guys- Kevin Smith, Geriot, Lindsay, Garrett.

I'm in the same boat as 97 when it comes to commenting on pre-Dooley years.

But one guy who people forget is Jarod Stevenson. He sort of underachieved for his first 3 years but he had one of the best seasons ever by a Spider his Sr year.

Go back and look at his stat line his Sr year. Per game avg 19.1 points, 5.9 rebs, 2.5 asst, 1.0 blocks, 1.0 steals. 47% from 3 (82 of 174). Led the team to the 2nd round of the tournament.

At 41 years old he is still playing professional in South Korea.

He would be on it, I was just going with guys that I have seen play. Johnny Newmam from what my dad has said was the best Spider player by far. He was just about ten years before I was born.

By the way, didn't realize how many Johnny come lately, Beilein Bandwagon guys we had on the board...

I started listening to UR basketball on the radio in March of 1978.

Winiecki had one year. no way is he 1st team all-Spider. that's crazy talk.
and if you're putting McCurdy on, you have to have Stewart.
Kendall makes my team for sure.

We're not all "red sweaters" on here, contrary to FRS statements otherwise.

So when Tarrant last went to the NCAA, you were younger than I was when I started listening on the radio...
UR beating 'Cuse is probably the earliest distinct college basketball memory I have. Of course, it was more about 'Cuse losing...had no idea what Richmond was at the time.

Warren Mills.
I don't recognize half the names mentioned above and did not recognize this one. However, I am told that a former player named Warren Mills deserves mention among the best in the long-standing UR basketball tradition of producing great players. Long before the time of most on this board, but I was told by an older knowledgeable Spider fan, now in assisted living, that he was the equal to any in the modern era.

"1952-55: The Warren Mills Era
On Feb. 3, 1953, Warren Mills scored 17 points as Richmond defeated national power North Carolina
in double overtime 87-82 in the Benedictine High School gym. On Jan. 31, 1955, Mills scored
13 points as Richmond held two-time First-Team All-American "Hot Rod" Hundley to seven points in
a 106-67 victory over West Virginia in the Richmond Arena. Mills was a four-year starter, two-time
captain, and First-Team All-State selection who finished his career with 1,233 points. He is a
Richmond Athletics Hall of Famer who was the first Spider to have his uniform jersey, No. 23, retired."

Bill Flye of course!! :)

Guards: Beckwith, Anderson, Anthony, Blair
Wings: Newman, G. Stevenson, B. McCurdy, K. Wood
Forwards: Harper, Perry, Cline, Stewart
Anywhere: Buckingham

This is fun but so difficult.
From 60s-70s. Aron Stewart, Bob McCurdy, John Moates, Kevin Eastman(defense and tenacity)
80s-90s. Ken Atkinson, John Schweitz,Beckwith, Greg Stephenson, John Newman, Curtis
Blair, Mike Perry(no supporting cast), Kenny Wood, Mike Winicki
20s. Justin Harper, Kevin Anderson, Kendall Anderson, TJ, SDJ

Terry Allen could have been on this list if he had not disappeared his last semester
of the A10 schedule.

We've had some great players over the years. But I think it's impossible to rank players, historically. Individual performances vary not only by quality of opponents, but by supporting players. Some of the great players may have had great seasons, in spite of not having the ideal supporting roster, others, maybe, because they did have great supporting players.

Can't forget players from the more distant past - Warren Mills - (honored in the Robins Center), Ed Harrison, Walt Lysaght, Ken Daniel, Butch Lambiotte - just to name a few...............really no way to know exactly how they would stack up against more recent players because so much about the game has changed over the years.

John Schweitz has got to be on this team. He scored a ton of points without the benefit of the 3 point line. Arguably the best pure shooter we've ever had at Richmond. Kevin Eastman and Jeff Butler are on this team too. Curtis Blair? Bill Fly (fellow Pike) would have absolutely thrived in Mooney's offense.

Schweitz was drafted by the Celtics and played a couple seasons in the NBA.

Kevin Eastman was not an exceptional college player. He hustled his butt off and had incredible basketball savvy but he was not the same caliber of player as the others mentioned on this thread.
