I Was Curious About Refs

At the last home game, I noticed a ref (Raymie Styons) and thought to myself that we seem to get more than our share of him. Since I'm retired and have time to waste, I decided to do some research using box scores of our games this year (including the RMC exhibition).

Given 28 games thus far, that means there have been 84 referee slots. Contrary to my perception, Styons has only officiated two of our games this year. But I did find - at least for me - some interesting facts:
  • Thus far we have had 57 different refs.
  • The most any ref has seen us is three times by six refs. Not taking into account the competition, we've done better with some of these refs than others. With one ref we are 3-0 (Ayers), we're 2-1 with three (Clark, Groover, Rutecki) and 1-2 with Gladden and Hull.
  • Fifteen refs have seen us twice. Of these, we are 2-0 with six of them, 1-1 with eight of them leaving only one (Smith) where we are 0-2.
  • I didn't see any games where the crew was exactly the same, but there were a couple of games where each of the three refs were repeats for us.
I'm not suggesting any causation or correlation between our record and which refs officiate our games, and I didn't take our opponents into account. But just as teams have different styles, so do refs. Some typically allow more physical play for example. I suppose there are some refs whose styles may favor us in a particular game and others whose styles do not.

I've probably wasted enough time on this so now it's time to Netflix and chill if that's still a thing.

You need to find something to do. Lol

Sec204and5, If you can take all the data for all ncaa games and run some analytics and do some mining and run that against final scores, spreads etc. you can probably find a Tim Donaghy situation. Just be careful what you do with it. I wouldn't put it past the NCAA to send some goons to your IP Address.

And I am not some big conspiracy theory guy. Just ask the truthers. :)

Lenny Wirtz made the great call at the Coliseum in the old RTD tourney when we were playing UVA and Curtis Blair bounced the inbound ball off a UVA player and then caught it inbounds. One ref gave the ball to UVA but waving both arms Wirtz reversed the call and awarded the ball to us.

And here I always thought Lenny was the Wirtz...

Don't know if anyone has watched on FS1 where they have All Access with both coaches miked the entire game. Oregon-St-Colo and Illinois-PennSt matchups I viewed. Would love to see Mooney miked and hear exactly what he conveys to his players along with ref discussions.

I watched a good bit of that Illinois -PSU game, that was pretty neat to see.

Mite i was at that rtd game, I think. Actually was thinking he did that vs tech??? One I am picturing, he actually scored the layup. He did pull that move a few times on out of bounds under the basket.

How about Phil Fox, Lou Bello and Otis "Cootie" Almond? Any of you remember them? If so, you're as old as dirt.

Not surprised, If memory serves correctly blackballed from ACC and Big 10. Hess also booted from ACC.

old as dirt here...I remember Bello, but not the others...Charlie Eckman was a ref from that generation too...

Go Spiders!

Lenny Wirtz, Hank Nichols and Joe Forte were always officiating ACC games in my youth.
