How are we feeling about the upcoming season?Defense/Offense/ Special Teams!

I know when my son was being recruited by D1 programs for soccer, his first interest was winning tradition and reputation. Nice training facilities and stadium and coaching staff were tied for second.

When he started coaching at a second tier D1 college his ability to recruit was limited by fact the college was in bottom 5% of all D1 colleges in total athletic budget. There was no lighting, outside locker room on level of a middle school and horrible playing field.
They always were second or third on recruits mind.

Next college had great training facility, nice stadium and reciruited all over the country and internationally. In addition was frequently in NCAA tournament.

So I would have to say facility does play a huge part.

How impactful the transfers will be could go a long way in how successful 2019 season will be. Will they buy into the new systems ? On "D" Feamster, RWilliams, Marchese. Will Durden's spread it around system work well with skill set of English, Fessler & Fuller ?

Having friends that follow DeMatha HS, we may have really gotten a winner in Beau English
our qb from the Air Force Academy. Last year we really suffered at that position.

what happened to the university will find a way to get any student into school regardless of their ability to pay, policy? Wasn't that the mantra a few years ago?

So wouldn't some 'worthy' students (who happen to play football) qualify for this type of consideration?

I have stated several times I would scour Virginia for kids that qualify for the free tuition, but if you treat them as a recruit they count against your scholarship limit even if they are on financial aide, or academic scholarship. DC has the system down to be able to pick up a few gems..

Richmond expects a self-help minimum contribution from all students not on athletic scholarships. Ivies and a few select schools will meet full need without loans and without self-help contributions for all their recruited athletes. With tuition close to $70k, self-help is on a sliding scale each year that caps in the third year providing no change in a student’s financial status. It’s a tough sell without a scholarship or huge bank account especially because walk-ons are rolling the dice for ever seeing the field.

I thought your number as high, but I guess you are looking at total cost to attend. Do you know if that affects the Virginia Promise Program?

Stated room cost varies (that’s the lowest possibility) — room draw dictates what actual cost might be. Food plans vary but athletes are not allowed to take the more economical plans. Textbooks these days can be quite costly meaning more than $1100. Not sure if there is a self-help expectation for the Promise. That said, the Promise is more likely to be given to those with VERY high academic profiles. Also, Richmond recalculates need based on its own formula and it varies from what the FAFSA calculates.

Keep in mind that any help the school gives a walk-on the NCAA would come down on
us like a pile of bricks. Even if a UR donor paid for the persons tuition, we would be
in big trouble.

Exactly right...cost is a big factor for any walk-on which is why finding walk-ons is difficult in this era.

unless the rules have changed dramatically this is not accurate -- you have to be careful and follow what the rules allow

How is it inaccurate? Donors can’t pick up a players tuition and have not be counted as a scholarship.

I would agree, not what I understood you to be saying. You mentioned the help given by the school to a walk-on. We have walk-ons with basketball and football each year. I cannot believe each one is paying full ticket.

Almost nobody at UR pays full ticket. If you do, you certainly can afford it.

Does anyone know anything about who the starting quarterback will be?

Six weeks before the season starts....I can't remember seeing such little interest on this board....

English is not here to sit on the bench

Speaking of a possible Spiders QB. It could be quite a pre season competition.

Spiders football interest is beginning to stir among the hard core fans, but these dog days waiting for pre season practice are like kids waiting for Christmas.

I hope Counter32's sabbatical is going well. We need him back to keep us well informed.

Go Spiders!

Don't be surprised if the Walker kid doesn't get into the mix. First pass he threw during workouts this summer was a 70 yard post to Jeremiah Brown and he has a big arm and from his film, seems smart in the pocket. Mancuso has gotten better too and it will likely come down to he and Beau but I wouldn't even try to call that one yet. We will see who is getting the first team reps come August.

It's nice having some good competition at QB. The other good thing is all 3 of these guys are athletic enough that we might be able to find some creative ways to get multiple of them on the field.

Based on the interviews of the transfers, it seems like the focus was on bringing in high character and high academic kids with 2 from Duke, 1 from Northwestern and one from Air Force. I like what I'm seeing so far from this team and I think these kids will fit in well.

Why? As long as the same considerations were given to nonathletic students. The UNC fake class episode verified that.

Everyone wants as many players as possible on the roster but I'm not seeing a problem with 83 (I think our current roster number). NFL rosters are only 53 players and for practice they have another 5 players on practice squad. I think the more important thing is the makeup of the roster. Do we have enough players at certain positions to fight off injury? Of course there is a big difference in a backup in the NFL taking over for a starter than an incoming freshman doing it in college.

The BIG difference is that in the NFL if they lose a player due to injuries, they can just go out and hire another one. They my only have a 53 man roster, but they will always have 53 players. They could lose 20 players, but will never go below 53. We lose 20 players and we're dead. Also the pros don't redshirt either. So your argument is flawed.
