Let's get down to football talk! How are we feeling about the spiders this season? I really think we can surprise some people if we stay healthy.

  • Offensive production is up in the air. Which quarterback? Which running backs? Will the QBs and the WRs work together better now that Corp and Bacote are gone and Durden is the offensive coordinator and QB coach, like he was at UT-C?
  • Offensive line should be better and a little deeper - but still needs to perform better. And we still need more healthy bodies. Like the last two years, injuries will be critical. Let's not have any.
  • We have gotten better in the offseason - but it appears that other teams have improved, as well. The other good teams have recruited well. This is a tough conference.
  • We will be bigger and stronger and deeper than last year - but so will other teams.
  • I like the assistant coaches who have joined us during the offseason.
  • If we can have a decent first half of the season, we will be a tough out for our opponents. After that, we have Delaware, Stony Brook, Villanova, and JMU all in a row, with Stony Brook being the only home game. Lord, would I like to beat Stony Brook.
  • FYI, if you want to get tickets for the game at JMU, they go on sale on July 1st by phone or on their website.
  • If any of my friends are going to the Delaware or Villanova games and need another passenger, please let me know.
  • I personally think that Russ has the bus headed in the right direction. We should trend upward this year. I can't wait. Go Spiders.

I can't remember a year where there felt like so many question marks headed into the season. It seems like we have some horses on both of our lines and some good talent sprinkled in all the positions ... and that's a big positive but we are also going to be integrating a ton of new players.

Overall, i continue to be very concerned by the overall lack of depth on the roster. We currently show about 75 players on roster and many of our opponents have 100-110. This seems like a big problem. Any insights on this?

if we can add 8-10 walkons we'll be fine. you re correct about the new folks, especially at QB. he has not thrown a pass in competition in 2 years. he's got a new system to learn and receivers. bottom line we will not compete for the CAA and for the playoffs.....we will all be home for the holidays!!!
6 wins...ecstatic with 7

It seems like some of the freshmen OL will have to play this year. I think the season hinges on whether they are ready to contribute.

If we start the season 3-1 we might have a chance. The 4 games in the middle of the season will be the make or break for us. I also agree that we can't start the season with a roster size below 85. It's not smart based on our last three seasons. Someone will go down and we need backups to come in and not miss a beat. This season will come down to those 4 four games. I see us at 8-4 or 7-5

JMU, Maine, Delaware, Elon and Yale are ranked in various pre-season polls. William & Mary should be much improved with Mike London. I think we all expect a loss at BC. Jacksonville, Fordham, Stony Brook and Albany are must win games. We will be fortunate to win 5-6 games, but you never know.

Does the conference rule requiring 1000 tickets for the visiting school still in effect?

Being small, private and over 60k per year presents a challenge.

65K a year for tuition vs 20K a year at JMU. Unless UR is willing to give a deep discount to attract players this will always be the main issue limiting roster size.
We will likely always have the fewest walk ons in the conference, but since Clawson came from Fordham until very recently, we had gotten very good at managing partial scholarships.

When we went down to Williamsburg at the end of last season, we dressed 42 or 43 players when you are allowed to dress 55 for a road conference game. It's like we are playing with one arm tied behind our back. Fortunately, i think the Tribe QB was also playing with an arm tied behind his back that day.

His throwing arm! <rimshot>

What's even worse is that you get one game a year (I believe this rule is still in place) where you don't have a limit - usually the rivalry game. We dressed everyone for W&M. Russ may not have seen the upside in dressing players he was unwilling to play.

I really hope there is a plan in place to fix the roster size in the future. This is big man football and the conference is getting better and putting more money into their programs. Teams are getting bigger and faster. I can say without a doubt that most of the schools will have more students athletes on their roster than UR. We are probably in the bottom half of the conference for roster size. If you recall the last three years its been injury after injury on this team, so having good back ups would help fill the void.

It could be the best of times or the worst of times. Or maybe somewhere in between. Ask me in November, about the time basketball season starts.

You were closer than I thought, I thought I had heard they were now about $25,000 per year. This is right from their website

In-state tuition: $7,250
Comprehensive fee: $4,956
Room and board: $10,740
Total in-state: $22,946

Out-of-state tuition: $24,150
Comprehensive fee: $4,956
Room and board: $10,740
Total out-of-state: $39,846

That stuff was all there a couple years ago when Rocco had 100 guys on the roster. Our roster is now 25% smaller. Why?

Is it all the coach??? Huesman was here during the Clawson years so I’d hope he would know how to follow the playbook. I was thinking you’d be taking a shot at the AD...but that is purely speculative.

In general, seems a very fixable issue.

Very few, if any, students pay 65K a year (tuition, R&B and fees, not just tuition) to attend the University of Richmond.

Plus, in FCS scholarships can be split among several players, as long as no more than 85 in total receive athletic aid.

Agree with Mo, lots of question marks.

Believe defense will be key early season as it will take some time for all the new offenses pieces to get in sync. If Russ gets this group to play his defense, early schedule suggests we should stay in games.

Hopefully, offense develops as season progresses. Believe we will be able to run the ball better after two disappointing years (injuries a factor, but not the only one). If we can run on offense and play good defense, then we will be in most games. (Obviously, we must cut down on the turnover rate from last season.)

Kicking game, hard to say. Probably average, but don't expect it to be lights out.

Bottom line - I believe predictions of 7 or 8 wins are optimistic. Sincerely, hope I'm wrong - which I am with some regularity.

I genuinely have no idea of the answers to my questions. I just know Russ and the AD need to figure out if we are going to return to the playoffs anytime soon.

I hope I am wrong here. I feel there is a behind the scenes agenda by our administration to move our athletics to D3.

Huesman's 3rd year, another year of "around .500" doesn't cut it for me....and I think 6-6 is optimistic.

I so hope that I'm wrong and we go to the playoffs!

Yes, I should have been more specific. I meant for everything not just tuition. Splitting scholarships is not going to help. Kids with multiple offers from FBS/FCS schools will consider it an insult to be offered a partial scholarship (and this is the talent level of players you need to compete in the CAA). Why would they accept a partial over a full ride somewhere else? What you end up with are DII/DIII level players. I'm not knocking them they play some great football at those levels but they are at those levels for a reason. Of course you can always find kids playing at the lower levels who are good enough to play up, but probably not too many and the coaches do a great job or sorting them out.
Without knowing anything about it...I wonder if this has changed over the last dozen years or so? If so that might explain some of our recent roster numbers.

We were having trouble with roster numbers around 2002/2003, then it got better as half scholarships became a good tool to obtain players who could blend in well with rest of the team. Maybe there are much fewer acceptable players available with that tool in recent years?

I wonder if 32Counter or anyone has a breakdown of the numbers on our past rosters as Full, Partial and Walk on?

Well in my humble opinion JMU is at a point where it is thinking about moving up to the D1 level in a conference like Conference USA. Hell they have a big advantage over us when roster size 110 to 80 on average. They have the ability to take a huge loss if a player gets injured in a game or practice because of the size of their roster. Richmond just needs to stay healthy and that has various components to it. Proper rest and diet is key and having a top notch staff that monitors each of position from the first string to the second string. You can win at UR its just takes some creative thinking by the coaches. I'm predicting a much better season maybe 8-4 or 7-5. BOOK IT

I would expect most players get full rides. Certainly the ones with multiple FBS/FCS offers. You can split 10-15 scholarships so a kid who might otherwise not consider walking on can.

Why would they accept a partial over a full ride somewhere else?

Because even with 2/3 athletic scholarship, most if not all of the the remaining cost can be covered by academic grants offered to most students. And a UR education has value.

I didn't even know you could give partial scholarships until my sons official visit and he told me one of the hosts was on a partial. You all know what the issue is. The NCAA requires a 2.5 HS GPA to be accepted into college. UR has a higher standard. JMU takes these disgruntled P5 players who are below UR academic standards, but elite athletes, that don't want to sit out a year and builds FCS powerhouse teams. Other teams are doing it too. I'll be curious to see if W&M promised to loosen their academic standards to get Mike London. Before anyone says, but he won a Natty in 2008 at UR with the high academic standards, that was 11 years ago and the landscape in college football has changed. I was at the JMU game last year. UR and JMU did not look like they play football at the same level. The size difference of the players really stood out.
Your last sentence leads me to suspect we may be in the not too distant future looking at going D2 or D3.

Our team sucked last year. We lost to JMU last year by 60 because we sucked, not because JMU was great. They lost at Colgate in the playoffs round of 16.

I am comparing our program now to where our program was 3 years ago. We were pretty damn good then.

Has there been a meaningful change in our admissions or tuituon level in the last 3 years? No there has not.

Lets get something straight here for parents who want to get there kids an education, all academic institutions have value. You can't hang your hat on that because if you not in the business of providing top notch athletics, the recruits will not come to a bottom feeder PERIOD! I bet you a school like North Carolina A&T who has beaten D1 schools in the last three years, a school you might look down on but they are higher in the polls. Parents would walk their kids on their backs if they had a free education. The UR value its important but you have to bring something else to the party.

FrontRoyal you have been saying for years, literally, that we were going to drop down to the Patriot League or worse. Yet, we’re still where we’ve been.
We had a bad year last year. No one can argue that. But that doesn’t mean we’re going anywhere.
We’re fiscally committed for several years to staying put.

NC A&T is a Division I school that plays in a D1 conference. So yes, I expect they've beaten some D1 schools in the last three years.

NCAT is a D1AA school like UR and you know what I meant by the statement. My point was parents look at all schools as a value to their kids. So you have to bring more to the table besides a UR valued education. You have to win or you are not going to get better recruits to come to UR. No matter how great your school is kids want to play for winners. They have beaten in the last three years, 3 D1 or FBS teams whichever you prefer to call them and they come from an inferior conference with a lower budget. So stop with the UR great value thing because some recruits will go anywhere to get out of their neighborhoods to play ball and go to school and not see the violence that they are seeing nightly. Trust me on this one family! Shit where I'm from we pushing 300 murders every year for the last ten years, so if a school offered my kids a chance to get out of dodge city it's a value. UR , NCAT , Temple, Morgan State, Randolph Macon or Morehouse , or any school you can come up with that I haven't named above is a value or a step up.. Any institution of higher learning is a value to a parent.
