Officials at Group of Five FBS schools who are tired of being given no chance to compete with the Power Five schools for a National Championship are starting to make noise about creating their own FBS National Championship. If this happens, does it devalue the FCS National Championship? Does this create more incentive for some FCS teams to make the jump to FBS? Stay tuned.

What it means is more fragmentation in FBS ranks. NCAA approval will be needed to start such a playoff. Effect on FCS is tough to determine, but IMHO don't see it changing much of the FCS/FBS dynamic.

Could also lead to an expansion of the current FBS playoff system to include more teams. The current bowl system is so over expanded that teams with losing records are included. One solution would be to have an expanded playoff which could utilize some of the earlier bowls.

We better have our AD come up with a vision of how to deal with this changing landscape or we will get lost in the fragmented dust.

It reads like some in the G5 are dead set against it. This will probably take a good while to play out if it does at all.

They should just go all "English Premier League" at the FBS level.

If you are a Group of 5 conference champion, you get to move up to a P5 conference.
If you finish last in your P5 conference, you get relegated.

If this ever happens, what are the chances this separates the G5 and P5 even further? And moves the G5 and top half (or so) of FCS closer together?

Here are my thoughts on what should happen:

1. Either form a 16 team FBS playoff where each conference gets an autobid (10) and the other 6 at-large bids.

2. Have the G5 merge with top-tier FCS and form a very respectable second division football league that will be very competitive.

I don't see how this really would negatively impact FCS at all. FCS fans will watch the FCS playoff, and non-FCS fans won't. That's pretty much how it is and always will be, with some rare exceptions when FBS fans tune in to see if NDSU can win 5 straight titles, or something like that.

And I doubt these schools would be looking to add FCS programs to their mix – the whole reason they want to do this is to separate themselves somehow, not add more potential teams to their mix.

Most of the bowls are just pathetic. Other than a few fans and some players' parents who really cares when a G5 team with a 6-6 record plays in the Lube Job Bowl hosted in Crapville, USA. This while 250 fans fill the stadium. Playing in a tournament for a National Championship seems to me to be more exciting. Can't believe some of these schools wouldn't think the same

do not need a 16 team playoff for the power 5 schools at all, would be stupid. they need to go to 8 or 10 and cap it. the ncaa basketball is unique in that on a given night, a little team can beat a big team but in football, not going to happen and to include those champs from chump conferences would make a joke of it. those non power fbs schools just need to understand who they are, nobodies. bottom line is that the people and the networks want the big boys not nobodies.

Nobodies should be in FCS

Just have them absorbed into FCS and our playoff system. Or have MVFC, CAA, Big Sky join them for a 24 team playoff. Most those teams are former FCS programs anyway.

they cannot be reasoned with, they feel they are better, much better. in reality, there are a handful of non-power 5 schools which can compete but other than that, they are fcs with more expenses.

My fear is that the powers-that-be create another major tier in football relegating most, if not all, FCS teams to Div II. I can see this happening and not sure that we could or would be willing to meet the criteria of remaining in the 2nd tier. Even if the NCAA does not lessen the number of our recruits, the perception would be a blow.

Hope that I am wrong or that we foresee the possibility of such a change and take the steps necessary to remain at the level at which we currently compete. However, for sure, things will change. We need to be prepared. The ODUs, App States, (JMU probably soon), etc. are already dwindling our recruiting pool. Athletes, for the most part, want to participate at the highest level that they can compete.

On the other hand, maybe we already are. Maybe those who know have already mapped this out and we already know where we will land. If the latter is true, I am wary of the results.

if the ncaa relegates certain teams, like us, to D-2 then we cannot play D-1 basketball so don't think it will take that form though, that would be one way to reduce the 300+ schools now playing D-1 roundball. we played rmc every year when i first began watching UR football. love going to odac games, a neat experience not to mentions competitive contests.

Had two kids that went to RMC. Went to many a game. Other than the HSC game, it was closer to a high school game atmosphere than college football

Hampden Sydney games are a lot of fun. I've gone to a few the last couple years and it's quite an experience.

First RMC game I went to, only family members were allowed in the tailgate area, where alcohol was served. To get my son's friends in we had to go to the gate and claim they were cousins and nephews. That policy went out the window pretty quickly. We had about fifty family members attend that game.

The more I think about this the more you may be right on this one. The A-10 has a bunch of schools that play non-scholarship or reduced scholarship FCS football now. Maybe they can start sponsoring football again under this scenario.

D3 football is not really a good product. Knew several friends pulled out the dorms to join the teams at several schools. Happens in a lot of D3 sports. Some schools support it like HSC, E&H etc but overall uninteresting to follow unless it's family members, friends etc. I will say student support is better then URs though at some of these schools....sad

I assume players are rarely recruited from the dorms at Mount Union & Wisconsin- White Water...

Ok, put this date on your calendar. I agree with iSpider.
I remember Chuck Boone fighting to keep us in 1-A and not be dropped to 1-AA. Unfortunately, our football clout is not very strong when you can't even fill-up an 8,500 seat stadium, and yet be putting some of the best football in the country on display, at our level. And our level is better than a lot of FBS programs.

While those two programs are strong they are the exception and are certainly not the rule. Considering they account for almost all the NCs in D3 the last 15-20 years that should tell you all you need to know. The general landscape of D3 football is regularly trounced by these schools as they are loaded with transfers. That's not to say there aren't stellar players (Guys who can play D1) or strong programs around the country, but the overall product is bad. There is virtually no parity and the rosters are bloated some teams have 150+ players. Most of our walk ons here would be at worst starters at D3 schools and likely all-conference, just my 2 cents.
