Grant Golden

Watch the video on Grant and his friend; happy and proud he is a Spider.

I sat right next to this young man and his mom. Very nice people. And the trio of St Bonaventure women behind me, who were cussing worse than any fans I have ever heard, didn't seem to bother them nearly as much as they bothered me!
VCU fans may be ignorant but a few days with the Bonny fans was harder to endure.

Know I'm in the minority among those posting on this message board, but having young men and coaches represent UR in the manner of Grant Golden, his teammates and coaches, means a lot to me. Believe me I enjoy winning as much as anyone; it's just not the most important thing to me. Having said that, the pieces seem to be in place for UR to get back to the dance and continue on a roll for the foreseeable future. Go Spiders!

I don’t not want that... I mean I don’t want our players getting in trouble in any way but I would probably be happier if we were winning 25-30 games a year and our players weren’t being acknowledged for this type of stuff. Obviously in a perfect world you get both 25-30 wins a year and positive role models in the community.

Grant was very kind to my 9 year old grandson when he attended a game with me - talking with him and giving him his autograph. Maybe next year add the name Bryce as well.

I am with you Ulla!!

If another member of the Golden family were to join the UR family, wouldn't that turn next season for UR into a great story and a real "page-turner?" It could represent one of those watershed moments when the tide truly turns in our favor...

Of course it would be wonderful to have Bryce because he is such a good player, but it would really be cool to have brothers playing together.

I agree Ulla. Particularly 97 and Moliva. Despicable rascals I would say. And that FMM guy on Twitter. We are a good 15-19 win team that does it the right way - well we fell short this year. I mean look at EC Matthews crying and calling Hurley his dad. He must be bad because he was a top 100 talent. We all know that you can't do things the right way and win. Impossible!!!

And I want an investigation into Aldridge at Davidson. I have seen some very interesting posts on here (not mentioning any names K) that would indicate that he may have been cloned from a former player on the Celtics. And he because he is good, he must be doing something wrong?

Stopped by the RC yesterday afternoon. Some of our guys were playing a pickup game. It is nice to see how much these guys enjoy playing with each other; something special is brewing. Joe Kirby was playing; he seems like a guy everyone likes and respects. If he chooses, he will someday be a great coach. The speed and skill of Jacob was on display as was that of Grant, who by the way got a haircut and looks great. Buck of course was a leader and is shooting well. Tomas has a good handle and if JJ’s arms get any bigger they are likely to pop. Love JJ’s enthusiasm; he certainly plays an important role as three point shooter and a no backdown enforcer. All in all, it was a great day for this retired Spider living a dream. By the way, the Spiders beat Princeton in baseball!

That's a false choice, it's not an either or.

but did he lay and egg in the tournament. If Aldridge had hit a few of the threes he took the outcome could have been different.

How did Khwan look?

Eight, not everyone was there. Neither Khwan nor Nick were present; both might have been in class. I did talk with a coach who said they are actively recruiting. He also said that the new AD Hardt had come by and talked with everyone. Nice to hear.

Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but did GG lead the the team in technical fouls this year?

On a serious note, here is a serious question for Ulla. What type/style of defense was being played in that pickup game?

Think it was man defense. These guys were playing on there own as I think that coaches cannot be involved. Will say one thing, Jacob made a pass to Bryce Schneider that was just remarkable.

I'm about 90% sure Grant led the team in technicals. But I don't think the amount was too high. I remember one being after a dunk/layup he landed basically face to face with a player and kind of pushed him to get by him. More of a bad luck scenario than anything else but still silly of him to do. I know at least one from arguing pretty bad calls. But hey, at least he's not running around tripping people like future G-leaguer Grayson Allen!

I often wonder about that. Teams such as UVA, Syracuse, Michigan, UR who play defenses other than traditional man, what do their players play during pickup games when they are away from the eyes/ire of the coaching staff? Even more so when everyone in the pickup games is a player on the team.

I don't have a big problem with Grant's T's. Going forward it will be good if he can just channel it into extra effort, but I like the fact that he has some fire and passion. I'd rather have that than the opposite. Much better to have to try to reign that in than motivate a player.

That's a tough call. It sometimes causes a loss in focus, particularly in celebratory mode. I've seen it too many times. A player is letting out that emotion camera mugging or headed back to defense.............while the person he is supposed to be guarding is dunking on the other end.

I've played in plenty where some form of zone is used.

I've been waiting for a long time to have a player with an attitude and someone every spider loves but every opposing fan hates because hes good and unapologetic about it. I think GG is that guy. Hopefully he adds a couple of sleeve tatoos in the offseason. Know Buck's smack game is pretty good, he needs to enable Grant more.

less attitude, but TJ was certainly beloved by Spiders and hated by others.

True but TJ didnt really make an impact until the last 1.5 years in terms of being "the guy". GG is already there in that regard. Everyone in the A10 already knows who he is and will get to know him the next 3 years.

Kenny Atkinson was "that guy". TJ a great player, but Kenny was a "tough sob" and baller through and through. Guess that is why he is a head coach in the NBA. I can recall classmates complaining about him playing in the carpet gym, no let up playing against us scrubs. I loved it. I hate to say it, but he would be disgusted by the acceptance of mediocrity we have now.

Like the chip on his shoulder but think he has to be careful with refs and complaining about calls.
