Gutsy play, a touchdown and a 2 point conversion. 15-0. Bob Black says a convincing start for Richmond. Jasmon and Bob said the Spiders want to make a point, given the talk by Morgan at the start of the game.
Bob pointed out that Rocco is on the field at the same time as Strauss. He said the staff has confidence that Strauss is closer to 100%. Otherwise they did not want to risk 2 QB's on the field at the same time and to risk any injury to Rocco. This post was edited on 11/29 1:38 PM by Stonewall D
Spidervol , every year I go through this. Our corners play off for a reason. They are on an island out there in man to man and do not have help. It's part of the defense. One of our safeties is much better in run support(Barnette) while Grant is pretty good at both. The defense we play as a base defense is built on stopping the run. This means the Lbers priority is to stop the run first. Especially the two Lbers in the middle. Sometimes the outside guy or striker Lber will drop in shorter coverages but Howard really has 3 responsibilities. Blitz, flat, stop The run. It makes it simpler for that position. Holmes is a little better in pass coverage but weaker in stopping the run. In summary our base defense has 7 in the box area. That leaves 4 in coverage with a safety that likes to Creep up. That leaves your corners in man to man with no help over the top. All this means is the soft spot in the defense is short routes in front of the corners. Now we can change defenses and try to shut down the pass but then we are vulnerable to the run. Plus our front four don't get a great pass rush so having Howard out there as well as Wright on Blitzes helps us get pressure. Again, all this puts pressure on the corners. When they are completing passes in front of our corners the better question might be why are we not getting to the QB?
