Free Throws!!!

5'7" Kendall Anthony takes 14 2 point shots and is only fouled once??? Lol

They actually didn't challenge us much in the paint, we had a lot of free drives or quick pivots that we scored on. Didn't think there were a lot of missed calls there.

I do think the refs were very generous on the other end though for VCU. Jonathan Williams literally ran into TJ on an out of control drive and they called a block and put him on the line. Ridiculous.

They probably got 6+ points out of dubious calls getting them to the line.

There's some skill in getting those foul calls. I've said all season that our team isn't as good at creating contact and making the refs blow the whistle. That goes for all of them, not just guards. Wish they'd learned more of that from Brothers and Lindsey who were great at it.

Midlo, that is true. The trick now is for the offensive guy to lead with his shoulder like Graham does.

Look, it needs to be said. The 5 missed FT hurt but the 13 additional chances that RPI had hurt worse not to mention TA getting a walk when landing on a lamb and Graham coming over Dre's back for a jump ball. We did not catch a break with the refs.

Those were very egregious, whamp, I agree. We kept the ball on the SDJ one, but it should have been a foul. Can't remember if we would have gotten FTs then or not.

VCU was also back to fouling at mid-court with full permission from the refs. Maybe UR should have sold it more, but some of the contact that was happening at mid-court was WAY more significant than the touch fouls called against us in the lane.

Free throw attempts weren't quite as one sided as they appear. We were deliberately fouling at game's end, to try to get back in game with time running out. Didn't work out, as VCU, to their credit, made the free throws. Also, we fouled a 3 point shooter.

Further, we made a lot of baskets in the paint that were uncontested. Refs did seem to try to be fair. A replay review was made to see if TJ should be called for a flagrant foul, and after the replay, a determination was made that there was no foul, at all.

Didn't Shaka's whining result in the review on the nonevent TJ Cline situation? It is a mystery to any thinking person why the refs call touch fouls close to the hoop and ignore riding the back fouls coming up the court.

Spider, at the beginning of the year the NCAA said they were going to make an effort to stop the hand checking and muggings in the open court. They didn't !!!!!

How about getting crushed AFTER the shot? Seems KA wasn't fouled missing the shot but got ridden to the floor after the shot.

I'm sure it must have happened but I just cannot remember watching a college basketball game in which a team did not make a single free throw.
It's a recurring theme in the tournament already this year, missing free throws loses games.
I know it's not the sole reason we lost, but as has been stated over and over again, this stuff can be taught!
Sorry, drives me crazy. I'm 68 and I promise I can make 6 or 7 of 10 walking down from the stands in street clothes.
Teach it the right way and then run the whole team when they're missed in practice and watch the percentages go up.
If this loses games, why would you not do it?
If in the last 5 minutes of games we didn't have to worry about having several less than 50% free throw shooters on the floor and if we played to score rather than running clock, what a differenct season this could have been.
Sorry again for the rant.

Great post 8legs and you are at the exact age to know what you are talking about!

8legs, I agree, 70% is a minimum to shoot when that's all you do all day every day is play basketball. Should be 80% .

How does a team out score the other significantly in the paint and shoot few foul shots. It does not
correlate to most statistical results.

I think for most of the year they actually did call a little more textbook. "Havoc" didn't seem all that threatening this year -- not just for UR, but for other VCU games I saw, opponents just didn't seem to have that hard a time, partially because mid-court fouls were called when VCU got too aggressive.

Though I thought the reffing went VCU's way a bit in this final game, really the only reason for VCU prevailing is that they shot the lights out. Very uncharacteristic for that team, and very unfortunate timing for the Spiders. With no Webber for VCU, the Spiders were the better team.

I agree in principle, though I think it's a bit silly to talk about our players ONLY playing basketball every day. I think they still have to go to class and such.

The silver lining is Friday's result should serve as a vehicle of motivation for our guys to fix this problem during the offseason. Nothing like motivation that stings for months.

Kweaver, figure of speech buddy, you know what I mean. I don't miss 5 foot straight putts and I do it once a week. :)

Wow, I miss five foot putts all the time. But I can make more that 50% FTs, and I'm 66.
