Liked the Bonnie announcers. They also said they were told before the game that GW3 was not going to play. That Spider staff is so sneaky. /s

It can be hard to come in and play positive basketball when you are in the doghouse. Players tend to play tentative or make mistakes. Impressed that GW3 played with confidence and knocked the shots down. Was trying to observe him on defense. Could not really observe any glaring deficiency, at least compared to his teammates. Nice work GW3!!

coach says we have to hit shots. we've been a horrible 3 point shooting team. we have a shot maker sitting on the bench.

I like Tyne and B Artis' defense, but 18 games is a long time. they aren't hitting shots. someone has to sit more to make room for a guy that will.

Mooney's philosophy is and always has been "This is what we do, and we are going to keep doing it until we get really good at it, no matter what."

You just can't have long-term success that way anymore, if you ever really could to begin with. The best coaches and managers ALWAYS adapt to the teams they have. Always.

I would love an explanation as to why GW3 has wasted away on our bench all year. This is a team devoid of adequate, even average shooters and we have the Ohio POY sitting on our bench collecting dust. He finally gets a few minutes last night and ends up our second leading scorer.

Meanwhile, B. Artis is here for 1 year on a team going no where and gets all of the minutes of the world, while shooting 15% from 3 and under 20% from the field. Tyne is out there running around with his hair on fire and Roche will go 3-4 games between hitting a couple shots. That is our guard room right now.

I don't know if GW stared too long at Mooney's wife or whatever, dude needs to play. He may not be our savior but neither are our current guards, so lets give him some run and see what happens.

Mooney only knows his way. And he ensures his staff only knows the same way too because most of them are his players or came up through his system.

my thought is that you expect water to find it's level.
B Artis had some impressive shooting years at Western Michigan. like Roche, you know he can shoot. you figure his numbers will balance out in time. he's only been active for 11 games this year ... but it's getting late. he needs to start making shots.
still, I probably trust the back of his card more than I do with Tyne.

delivered a sixth of our total point score in 9 minutes of game time but couldnt crack the line up of a team struggling mightily until halfway through January 🙄

Excellent post. I don’t know if the prez’s performance last night was a one time thing and lucky shots or skills. But at this point, it doesn’t matter. If he’s potentially capable of replicating what he did last night, then he deserves his share of minutes. As 97 pointed out, the alternatives are not producing. Until prez proves to us that he can’t then Moon needs to give him more chances to prove that he can. At least for last night, what the f has he been doing buried on the bench based upon the percentages 97 posted. Let him play.

GW3 made two threes last night in 30 seconds of game time.

Tyne has played 134 minutes in conference play and has made ONE more three than GW3 did in 30 seconds.

B Artis has played 100 minutes in conference play and has made ONE more three than GW3 did in 30 seconds.

Play the man.

Mooney was taking a page out of the NBA playbook. Load managment. Rest GW3 for the first half of the season, and he will be ready to go all 2nd half, just enough time for him to fill up his highlight tape for this year and transfer somewhere else.

Gross incompetence.
Fire Mooney.

Dear God. What an indictment. I mean you could almost start him on Saturday. He has to play like 20 minutes against SLU unless he comes out and just trips over his own feet and throws that ball into the 3rd row.

Agree on GW3. Roche and White have a 1/2 season left of eligibility. Would like to see what we have in GW3 in a larger sample size.

We were waiting for us to schedule a game on Monday night, for him to have his first game.
GW with his inaugural game…

Other than shooting, which simply hasn't come around, I prefer B. Artis to Mikkel at all times. He's much more a floor general.

However, it will get to a point pretty quickly where it makes much more sense to play guys with eligibility left.

In almost every situation I'm watching this year im typically doing the same thing.... trying to calculate playing time mainly with eligibility concerns as a primary factor. What do we want our roster to look like in year 2 or year 3 of a given cycle.

I understand the constant turnover in college sports right now, but at this point we're still Richmond.... and perhaps we try to focus on portal activity as a main avenue of recruiting as opposed to high school recruiting.... and we look for guys with 2/3 years of eligibility left and focus on them.... perhaps guys that don't like the way their first year/two years went somewhere else..... not grad student types?

I know im stating the obvious here, and the balance between turning down a guy like Dusan and going after perhaps guys who haven't proven themselves yet isn't an easy decision....... but we perhaps we TRY to use the system in a way that works for us and try lock guys in for an extra year or two so they're comfortable with the system that we run? Maybe that makes more sense? Again, we're still Richmond... and we still run the system we run for as long as we're gonna still run the system we run.... and we've seen what that looked like this year with a bunch of new guys trying to fit.

That being said.... obviously I accept the argument that if you go out and get a guy like AP and or Dusan who can pretty much do everything... they'll fit into whatever system you run (presuming the system makes sense and is effective).

I feel like maybe im even contradicting myself here cause honestly as it relates to GWIII my response would be.... just play your most talented guys .... to hell with the system and everything else. To hell with worrying about turnovers and playing perfectly efficient.... and let all the pieces fall where they may.

Did you see him handling the ball last night? He's perfectly capable. He's a 6'7'' point guard if we want him who can't shoot the ball well. What are we worried about? Him throwing the ball into the stands, making the wrong cut, and getting beat off the dribble every once in a while.... all the while he's making 5 three pointers and posting up smaller guards the way everyone else does to us? While the other guys who are playing are less talented and throwing the ball into the stands and making the wrong cuts and constantly getting beat off the dribble also?

I think Mooney is just trying to get a 16 seed in the NCAAs to help complete the “win at every seed” goal of Richmond.

First step is to build a 16 seed resume, which we have done very well at. Next step is to get some rust off our secret weapon that will help us get the upset win in March.

Which one is the secret weapon??? This is exciting…

I think at some point, you have to start playing your younger guys. This team has a NET in mid to upper 200's right now, we are not playing for any type of postseason ball. Got to play the guys that are gonna be here next year (or we hope are going to be here).

who are you talking about here?
who's our 6'7" point guard who can't shoot?

I do think AP is getting pretty good as a playmaker. His height and reach allows him to make those entry passes easily. A pass that likely gets intercepted if Tyne is trying to make it, gets through from AP. I agree with the sentiment that we need to get as many minutes as possible for guys that are in the future plans at this point. Really would have been nice to see the redshirts play this year.

Ironic or coincidence? Title of JOC's article in sports section of RTD today "Fighting For Freedom - Little Used GW Seeks Independence From UR's Bench". Have to wonder if JOC reads this forum.

coincidence. JOC is a big military & history guy. he was eager on his own to eventually tee that up.

But...no doubt he at least periodically reads board...probably more than periodically.
