After his first season here in 2012, Rocco was extended through the 2017 season. Given that he's through 3 of those 5 years already ... and since it is already 2016 in 10 days, I think it would be a good thing if we got him locked up for another 2-3 years. It would be great if a few more crumbs could be tossed in the assistant pool of money too.

Thoughts?

Agree. We need to keep Rocco and his assistants. I understand we are a FCS program and there are limits, but this staff should be near the high end of the pay scale. I feel like if we take care of him DR could be here for the long term, given his age and the fact that he knows he can win here.

J O's blog says that Ball State may come calling. Let's get out the checkbook -
Had a feeling this would begin to happen with the success Coach Rocco has had in pretty quickly rebuilding our program...

hope the AD and President Crutcher will do what's necessary to reward Coach and his staff for their outstanding work this year and in the past four years...

you can't blame any coach for looking and listening to what the market will bear for his services, but holy cow!...if Coach was to leave, I hope I'd be for better than Ball State...

Here's the piece mojo:

"Rocco could attract interest from Ball St.

If Ball State reached out to Richmond football coach Danny Rocco, that would be no shock. Mark Sandy, Ball State's athletics director, has familiarity with Rocco and the environment in which he has succeeded.

Sandy was an associate AD at Richmond from 2000 to 2005 and still has many contacts in town. Pete Lembo, Ball State's coach the past five seasons, left for Maryland on Dec. 22 to be the Terps' associate head coach and special teams coordinator.

Lembo is a former coach at FCS schools Lehigh and Elon. Sandy came from Eastern Kentucky, an FCS member at which he was AD. In 10 years at two FCS schools - Liberty and Richmond - Rocco has gone 80-38. He directed the Spiders to the FCS playoffs each of the past two seasons, and UR reached the 2015 semifinals.

Rocco has been UR's coach since 2012. None of his teams at LU or UR had a losing record.

Ball State, an FBS school that belongs to the Mid-American Conference, paid Lembo $500,000 in his final year. Ball State went 3-9 this year and 5-7 last year. Rocco has one year of NFL experience and extensive experience as an FBS assistant."

Local Muncie,Ind. rag:

http://www.ballstatedaily.com/article/2015/12/ball-state-pete-lembo-resigns

Pete Lembo was making $514,250 in 2015.

His coaching record at Ball State peaked at 2013 and recently had back-to-back losing seasons.Maybe he got out of Muncie while the getting was good to take an assistant job at Maryland
( with Mike London).Maybe he got a 5 year deal out of it.

Pete Lembo - Ball State record by year

2015: 3-9 (MAC 2-6)

2014: 5-7 (MAC 4-4)

2013: 10-3 (MAC 7-1)

2012: 9-4 (MAC: 6-2)

2011: 6-6 (MAC: 4-4)

thanks Counter...the Sandy connection and some of the other perspective makes this even more intriguing...

all we can do is hope the University will do what it should and see if an offer materializes...

Recall that Clawson, who was looking for a job after the Tennessee debacle, ended up at MAC Bowling Green. Was successful there and got out of Muncie after a few years to take the ACC Wake job.

Since he was making around $430k at Liberty have to believe he's making more than that here so $500k (Lembo's final salary) not much of a bump.

It's difficult for me to believe this is a real possibility. Lembo left the Ball State HC Job to be the Special Teams coach at Maryland. What does that tell you about the Ball State job?

Mo- Lembo is also Associate Head Coach at Maryland. Which, apparently is chasing off Locksley, their best
recruiter, and interim head coach.

Coach Rocco likes to win. He came to UR to compete for a National Championship which he did not think he could do at Liberty. He has a real chance next year with our team likely being preseason top 5. If he feels comfortable that he and his staff are being treated fairly and are supported by the administration, he will not leave.

Any idea what Maryland is doling out for assistants? London got a similar title ans is defensive line coach. You'd have to think the coordinators are on par with Lembo and London, if not ahead of them.

Are they paying 4 assistants $500k or more?

I'm sorry I don't know for sure. But one thing I do know is that Kevin Plank (owner of Under Armour), is laying down big bucks to make Maryland a top program. So, my guess is that they are being paid well.
Kind of like Knight (Nike) has done at Oregon.

So when will we have one of our great b'school grads initiate their start up athletic clothing company? That seems to be the way to explode athletic funding in this modern world

This was 2 years ago at Maryland

Coach Position Salary Max Bonus
Mike Locksley OC/QBs $632,000 $110,000
Brian Stewart DC/DBs $422,560 $110,000
Greg Studrawa OLs $275,000 $70,000
Keenan McCardell WRs $265,000 $70,000
Keith Dudzinski ILBs $222,500 $70,000
Lyndon Johnson AHC/OLBs $222,200 $70,000
Andre Powell STC/RBs $222,000 $70,000
John Dunn RC/TEs $167,200 $70,000
Chad Wilt DLs $160,000 $70,000

Those are pretty remarkable numbers for a program as moribund as Maryland has been, but unless there's been a pretty significant increase in the assistant pool of money, it's tough to see how Lembo got much of a raise by leaving Ball State to go there.

Ash is a strong candidate as well...let's hope they go in that direction.

This would be Charlie's new conference (Missouri Valley)and new territory(Upper Mid West).

It's great that Charlie would be in the running for an FCS head coaching job but Western Illinois?

WIU's Head Coach left to become the Head Coach at South Dakota(MVC).Seems quite odd to move
laterally intra-conference.

Western finalizes search committee for new head football coach

MACOMB — Western Illinois interim director of athletics Matt Tanney on Wednesday announced the eight-member search committee assigned to hire the Leathernecks’ next head football coach.

Tanney will chair the committee, which includes football player Brett Taylor.

Also in the group are John Biernbaum (associate vice president, student services), Laurie Black (registrar’s office), Dr. Tom Cody (faculty athletic representative), Cathy Early (WIU board of trustees and athletic department Hall of Fame member), Dr. Algerian Hart (coordinator of graduate program in kinesiology) and Amy Spelman (director of WIU Alumni Association).

Western is seeking a replacement for three-year coach Bob Nielson, who recently accepted the same position at South Dakota.

“There’s great interest in the position, nationally, and the search committee looks forward to evaluating the applicant pool,” Tanney said in a news release.

“I’ve thanked the group in advance for their commitment to working through the holiday season so that we can identify the next head coach of Leatherneck football in a thoughtful, but timely, manner.”

Western advanced to the second round of the FCS playoffs. The Leathernecks went 7-6 overall and tied for third in the Missouri Valley Football Conference at 5-3.

-----------------------------------

Assuming that Charlie et al are able to cultivate another corp of UR running backs in 2016 we have a shot at being better than 2015.

I guess that the WIU interim AD was impressed that we took host ILL State to the woodshed and broke their 19 game home streak.Of course, the entire team on both sides of the ball played great that day in Normal,ILL particulary Jacobi,Kyle,Brian and our Oline. Our D stopping the run was exceptional on that day holding them to 65yds rushing.

MVC Conference:

Illinois State University Normal, Illinois
Indiana State University Terre Haute, Indiana
Missouri State University Springfield, Missouri
North Dakota State University Fargo, North Dakota
University of Northern Iowa Cedar Falls, Iowa
University of South Dakota Vermillion, South Dakota
South Dakota State University Brookings, South Dakota
Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois
Western Illinois University Macomb, Illinois
Youngstown State University Youngstown, Ohio

Really hope our guys don't have to learn another offensive game plan; this one just started to really flourish this season with the balanced attack we'd been promised for years. Have also liked how CF calls the game in keeping opponents off balance. So while you always wish the best for a coach, have to hope he's back on the Spider sideline when spring ball kicks off and in our booth next fall.

agree with Midlo...think Coach Fisher's work as OC was a very big factor in this season's success...

the more balanced offense gave Jacobi and our offensive line a real chance to shine, as well as, accelerating the learning process for Lauletta running the offense and connecting with our outstanding WRs..the rushing offense led to more control of the clock, providing a fresher and more effective defense to boot...

if he wants to be a HC, I'm glad he's getting a chance...good luck to him, but it sure would be good to have him back...

During the interview one of the press corp asked about whether the money problems of the program were of a concern to a potential candidate.

Remember that WIU played at Dayton in the 1st round of the FCS playoffs.Meaning that the Leathernecks were outbid by the Flyers.Unusual for a MVC team to be outbid by a Pioneer League team.

I wish Fisher good luck and trust DR to hire another good replacement if he needs to.

Can Sparky Woods call plays or would we hire an OC from outside the program?

I too wish Charlie luck, but I really hope I am wishing him luck continuing as a Spider

It was about at-large bid numbers for Rocco. If you didn't win Big South, you didn't make playoffs. With CAA, some years you can finish 4th/5th and still get in.

Because for Rocco that wouldn't make sense, but if Fisher wants to be a HC then it makes sense for him. So yeah they probably assumed but are also realistic

The two candidates will be part of campus and community open forums in the Corbin-Olson E-Classroom. Fisher’s forum is at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with Ash’s at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Tanney is the chairman of the eight-member search committee assigned to find a replacement for three-year Leathernecks coach Bob Nielson.
