Eerily Quiet

One thing that strikes me as much as all the frustration on here is the relative quietness. It feels as if the lack of care by the administration has slowly sifted its way to us. It feels as if we have now accepted this loser mentality that we will never be relevant. We seem subdued. We seem to be reconciling the importance of our Spider pride in our lives. It feels as if we gave it our best, and now we seem to be moving to the acceptance stage. It saddens me as much as anything. I feel we are feeling despair and lack of hope. It didn't have to be this way. It seems like a time of reflection. But sometimes you have to go through a chaotic period before emerging stronger. My hope is that the school somehow learns some lessons and we come back stronger than ever. It still can be.

It's always quiet at the end of a season I find. I don't know that this one is any quieter than others, we just have an even more sour note that we ended upon, at least for a bunch of folks.

I guess what I'm getting at is it seems like with the situation we are in we would actually be more active and worked up instead of noticeably quiet.

mr., it's kind of like the old saying: "You can't fight city hall". In this case the triumvirate (moon, PQ, Jabba) have told us our outcome, and that we should like it. Yes, I think it is easier on the blood pressure to just accept it. I went off the rails about this last year, as I thought we can't possibly just let this go on. But we will. Accept it, and find other teams or interests to invest your time.

You are correct. They control decisions while their decision making puts us in position to find other teams to watch or pull for in NCAA tournament. One day maybe we'll get back there. I believe we have that "potential".:D. That seems to be our word for moving forward. Maybe Hardt's expression would be "running with potential like never before".

I could never choose another team. I follow the Spiders hard, but that is my 100% sports fixation. And basketball is far & away the king sport for me. And yet I haven't watched the NCAA tournament in years, haven't even opened a bracket to see who is in for that matter in years. I really don't care about any sport besides the Spiders. End of story for me.

The excitement of March has been gone from the last 8 years being a Spiders' fan.

Feels like this past season was the anger phase, now we get full into apathy.

There bed has now been made. Unfortunately, we all have to lie in it.

It is relatively quiet. We have been beaten by the UR deep state.

Actually, after watching the A-10 the past few months, I am in awe watching real basketball during this tournament. Teams rebounding and boxing out is a beautiful thing to see.

I'm confused. Monday you made a thread saying "Goodbye" - which seemingly implied you were leaving.

And less than 72 hours later you create another thread saying it is too quiet.

Welcome to message boards! mr. is a great guy. He'll be back. Even if he says he's leaving.
Damn it. You're probably right, I love the Spiders too much. However, I AM forced into giving up season tickets because I simply cannot support what is going on right now and I have to put my vote in.

The crux of the issue I'm dealing with is:

Am I allowed to show our Spiders tough love and demand better behavior (desire to care and take steps for improving) before I attend/donate again? Or do I have to drag thru the muck so I can allow myself to enjoy success again if it ever comes again?

I wouldn't continue to allow my kids to watch TV if they don't do their homework or give them cookies if they don't eat their dinner. I still love them even if they aren't behaving but I don't want to encourage bad behavior.

I have already firmly decided not to donate and not to buy season tickets starting this coming year. And I've already decided I won't attend the rest of the season once the team has been mathematically eliminated from at large consideration. That has worked for me emotionally the last few years. I still attended when we were 2-10 or whatever because in my opinion if we went undefeated (as unlikely as that was) the rest of the way, we could still be in consideration for an at-large. But once winning out is not enough then I am allowed to excuse myself.

Do I need to take it a step further and not attend at all until we take action to improve, saving my emotions (but yet feeling lack) and sending a stronger message? Do the kids earn a half cookie if they sit down at the dinner table and not eat? Did I stop loving them until they improved their behavior?

True, but my requirement was to hang-in until even winning out would not create an inkling of a chance. If we had gone undefeated after game 1 (how ever unlikely), we would have been an at-large team

My point is conference play was pointless the last year, our only way in was to win the A10 tournament.

That probably describes 60% of the content on most message boards. Pad your stats!

You are very generous ......"meaningless threads" ......are probably much higher than 60%................but "meaning" is probably not what most people who read this and other boards are seeking.......................

Correct. I was out after late December because we were eliminated. However, I went to the A10 tournament in Brooklyn because that was the next meaningful game where we had something to play for.

Last year, at-large selection was all but ELIMINATED after the first game...

We are *so* far away from an at-large bid

There are 36 at-large teams in this year's tourney. Arizona State and Baylor each had 2 Quad 4 losses. The other 34 at-large teams had *zero* Quad 4 losses.

We had 6.

The notion that we're close if we just get healthy and "work hard" is absurd. This coach doesn't close out must-win games.

On a bright note, we were Quad 4 loses for 13 other schools!

Support what you want them to be, that is how they will get there. (I have not doubts next year will be a couple steps towards that).

am away from this now, not like the old days when was at practice a lot and at all games. what does our team look like now, out there on the floor, do we look like we have the talent to compete or do we look like a team from a lower level? no matter the Xs and Os, if you don't have talent, you are not going to win much and just wondering if we have the talent.

My $0.02....there are guys being forced to play that would normally have not seen the floor until conference play of sophomore year and would have upper classmen shouldering the team.
This is accurate. But I'd be more likely to use it as an excuse if we had a coach in his second year, not his 14th. And I realize you're not using it as one either, I'm just making a point.

I don’t go to practices nor am I qualified to necessarily gauge the talent we have, so take what I say with a grain of salt. I think we have four guys who are competent A10 level guys, only one of whom plays well on O and has “size-appropriate” defense (Jacob). Two can score in bunches (Grant and Nick) but are fairly significant defensive liabilities. The fourth (Nate) can play two ways but can be shut down offensively if kept out of the lane, and is often going to be smaller than his opponent in man situations. Oh and our top two volume free throw shooters are fair to middling, and that’s probably being kind.

It’s so hard to tell if our problems are talent related or that they aren’t put in position to succeed. As 05 mentions they are young due to roster management problems so some of them get a pass. I don’t feel yet like we have a full starting five that are A10 ready. Maybe talented enough but not ready enough?

so observing the floor during warm ups and the game, our guys match up with the opponent?

As far as athleticism we were pretty clearly the least athletic team on the court nearly every game I saw this year (even against Longwood, Oral Roberts, etc.).

Talent wise, I'd say we were actually much closer, at least for our starters. Once we had to go to the bench the drop-off was severe.

Idk, not really? Depends a fair bit on who we are playing. I think we are often able to match up with just about any opponent on offense except if they throw various zones at us. The O tends to be decent with our starting 5.

D is an entirely different story.
