Eastern Michigan recommended drop to D2

The academic pinheads at EMU do not realize that, A, the Horizon League does not sponsor football, and B, if you wish to play Division I basketball and have football, your football program must at least be at the FCS level. So if EMU joined the Horizon League and decided to keep football, it would have to join another league as an affiliate member, which would probably be more expensive than at present playing in the MAC.

EMU may be better served dropping football, even if it would mean leaving the MAC, the home of all of its historical rivals. And, while Title IX is supposed to apply to both sexes, nobody seems to care much when football is dropped and 120 opportunities for males to compete in intercollegiate athletics are eliminated.

EMU's record over the past 8 years has been pathetic.

2008. 3-9,2-6
2009. 0-12,0-8
2010. 2-10,2-6
2011. 6-6,4-4
2012. 2-10,1-7
2013. 2-10,1-7
2014. 2-10,1-7
2015. 1-11,0-8

An awful program is nothing new here.Talk about lack of return on investment.
Blame it on the AD's,blame it on the coaches, blame it on the players that didn't execute, blame it on the administration that wasn't paying attention.

If you are a EMU student, alum, faculty member or a local,do you come out and root for this team on a Saturday afternoon. What a waste of 3 hours that would be.

Even Army has scheduled these guys.

Moving down to D2 won't save EMU much money. The D2 cap on ships is 36.Saving 49 annual ships ain't the problem.Nobody cares about football there. The program stinks.Grand Valley State,a nearby by D2 team would beat EMU now by 4 TD's.

EMU's average basketball attendance is 901. They're bleeding money.

But yes, definitely a lack of understanding about what's allowed in terms of offering football as part of a D-I program. Incorrect statements about D-II and D-III as football destinations, "I-AA" reference, no mention of being able to do non scholarship and still be FCS, incorrect FCS scholarship cap number, etc.

Do any holes in our schedule marry up with any of these Kentucky or Army games?

Thinking the same thing.2019 Kenucky if we were to play 2 FBS and 2 OOC FCS.We will play 12 regular season games in 2019.Right now it's BC+?+Fordham+?+8CAA=12.Right now BC and Fordham are both away games.

BC could try to once again renege on the 2019 game,in any case.Backfilling with Kentucky would be a double win financially.

I would think Horizon League for Olympic Sports and Pioneer for Football.

If they conducted a study how freaking hard is it to research that you can not play up or down a division in one sport? The fact that they mention they can play football in a non existent conference or move down a divison or two shows they did not do much homework. Although he is right that it's a losing proposition they could have better suggestions then that.

I do agree it's time for these directional schools and non bcs to merge with caa mvfc big west Socon schools instead of playing for nothing at the fbs level.

Ever hear of a head fake.

Open Letter to the EMU Campus Community, Alumni, Friends and Supporters
We will remain proud members of the Mid-American Conference football family for a long, long time.
Apr. 26, 2016 General
In the past several days, there has been considerable media coverage of reports that indicate that Eastern Michigan University is considering eliminating football, or reducing support for football by dropping down to a lower division of the NCAA and by dropping out of the Mid-American Conference. These reports are not based on any solid factual information. We have absolutely no plans to eliminate football or move into any other division or conference.

We are pleased to be a member of an outstanding conference, the Mid-American Conference, where all of our sports and our talented student athletes have the opportunity to compete at the highest levels with neighboring institutions in the Midwest. Any headlines or claims that Eastern is considering dropping football, or reducing our support of the program in any way, are false.

We are 100 percent supportive of our current Athletics administration, particularly Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Heather Lyke. She has assembled an outstanding support team and we already have seen positive results in terms of continuing Eastern's championship traditions in a number of our sports, as well as in many new initiatives to increase revenues. As an example, year-to-date, fundraising has increased by nearly $430,000.

Two-and-a-half years ago, she hired an outstanding football coach in Chris Creighton. Now entering his third year and with the majority of the team now made up of his recruits, we believe the best is ahead in terms of on the field and academic performance. We believe very strongly in Coach Creighton and his efforts to rebuild the program.

We want to collectively reiterate that any notion, suggestion, or headline that in any way suggests Eastern is considering eliminating football or moving into another conference or division, is absolutely false. We will remain proud members of the Mid-American Conference football family for a long, long time.

Sincerely,

Interim President Donald Loppnow

well, that is usually the kiss of death. they are certainly not the only institution with athletic money probs.

There are some hockey teams that play D-1 in hockey and D-2 or D-3 in everything else. Not quite sure how that works.

D1 hockey (Union, St. Lawrence, etc.) and lacrosse (Johns Hopkins) programs "grandfathered" as they have traditionally competed at the highest level in the sport.

There's is no NCAA championship in D-II for men's hockey, and schools are permitted to play up if they prefer for that sport and others where championships are not sponsored.

There are also some schools that were grandfathered in for certain sports.

Edit: Wikipedia has a good summary of the conditions in which you're allowed to play up a division and the list of schools that are doing so. The exceptions are focused on playing up a division in one or a small number of sports, and the reverse is not permitted for any reason...having your program in D-I but playing a single sport down a division.

Believe in 1993 NCAA forced schools like Georgetown duquense Dayton etc playing d3 football to move up to their respective divisions but grandfathered non revenue sports schools like JHU lax to stay in. So technically yes there are schools in different divisions but the mobility is no longer allowed. Not example, EMU moving to D2 for football but D1 for everything else.

all of these schools with $$$$$ probs and that is without even paying the players.

probably nothing wrong with moving from fcs to fbs if you have the resources but most schools simply do not and moving up to these really average conferences to play all your sports with teams spread from canada to mexico and the atlantic ocean to the pacific ocean, makes no sense at all.

Idaho is the oldest, best academically and by far the prettiest campus in the state, in a nice college town that is only eight miles from another nice college town (Pullman, the home of Wazzu). It unwisely chose to join I-A 20 years ago simply to keep up with Boise State. The Vandals are making the smart choice, and rejoining a league they have history with and that is within their relative geographic footprint. They will be instantly competitive and their program will flourish again.

Idaho will have to adapt future scheduling beginning as late as 2018.

In the event either team fails to maintain Division 1A membership, the other team has the right to cancel the game without penalty upon reasonable notice to the other party.

at Indiana (2021 & 2022)
Guarantee to Idaho is $1.2 million for the game in 2021 and $1.3 million for the game in 2022. If cancellation is by mutual consent, this contract shall be null and void.

Idaho won't pay anything to anybody. The impacted opponents will simply find other opponents to fill the date, especially if it's a home-and-home deal, since FBS schools do not play at FCS venues.

And it's highly probable they might even play at Fresno and at Wyoming, since those aren't body-bag games and most FCS schools play one FBS opponent anyways. They might even play at Florida, since it's a huge payday and the SEC regularly plays patsies OOC.

Penn State and Indiana can't play FCS opponents, per Big Ten scheduling requirements.

Horrors! I hope our beloved Spiders are not forced to go D2 or D3. Back in 1979 (after going 0-11) we became dangerously close to dropping football!

Sf spider you roll your eyes, It is true that UR almost dropped football after the disasterous winless campaign in 1979. I recall there was a meeting of the university board of trustees in which it was decided to continue the football program. My hometown newspaper in Lynchburg ran an article on UR trustees voting to keep football. Normally the newspaper in the HillCity does very little write ups about UR.

I was rolling my eyes about the "forced to go D2/D3" comment. And this isn't 1979.

Yes this is not 1979. My comment about D2or3 is tongue in cheek. Though there are Dukes and Rams whom would love to see UR sports downgraded! Screw them! We are not going D2or3!

if that happens, aac should just fold up and all schools find their best landing spot
