The RTD wrote today about the leaping ability of Dejon in basketball prior his arrival at UR for basketball; check this out. Fun.

Who was last 2 sport male at UR? I seem to remember a football player
played on basketball team due to injuries. Of course Becca Wann played women's
soccer and basketball and was a star at both.

Brian Jordan was player baseball and football. He had a long career in the majors playing for the braves.
started out in the cardinals farm system after junior year and came back to school to finish his football career. Wound up playing MLB with Cardinals and Braves, becoming an All-star at least once. Also played several years in the NFL with the Falcons and believe he was an all-pro safety one year. great student athlete really nice guy and makes it to games on occasion.

All Star in both the NFL and MLB, he is in rarefied air, I don't think "Neon Deion" accomplished that.........................

when I ran, in the outdoor track & field season most of our weight and sprint guys were football players --- but those days are gone and look like they will never return

Did Jim Livesay a star receiver for the football team also run in a relay team that placed nationally in track and field?

He was a very talented receiver. He had a gift of speed and endurance. Jim Livesay was one of the greatest UR receivers.

It was Carl Wood -400/400m/4x400 relay

Blazing speed along with Gillette.

Carl Wood

Inducted in the Class of 2001-02

Carl Wood enjoyed a brilliant track career that garnered numerous accolades and still ranks among the best in program history. A seven-time All-American, Wood was Richmond's first First Team All-American, earning the honor in the 440-meter intermediate hurdles. During his collegiate career, Wood set the Southern Conference record in the intermediate and high hurdles. He won the Southern Conference and NCAA Championship in the 440-meter intermediate hurdles in 1969. Wood was a four-time state and SoCon champion in the intermediate hurdles. Wood won the 1969 U.S. Track & Field Federation hurdles title and went on to be a finalist in the 1972 U.S. Olympic Trials. He climbed as high as third-ranked in the world and was ranked as high as fifth in the end-of-the-year rankings. A Richmond, Va. native, Wood set six program records during his collegiate career. He still holds the school record in the indoor 400 and 440 and the outdoor record in the 400 intermediate hurdles and the shuttle hurdles. Wood came to UR on a football scholarship. He was a receiver on the 1968 and 1969 teams. Wood served as track captain during the 1969 and 1971 seasons.

Ran on several relays with Carl -- he was an absolute beast!

In my day, Carl Wood, Jim Livesay and Walker Gillette were all just great athletes.

1, was Fred Guest on your track team? He was a high school buddy of mine (Tucker H.S.), and if I remember correctly, he was the first to ever receive a track scholarship to UR. He was a great miler and cross country guy.

Freddie was a senior my freshman year. Great runner, great teammate, and good sense of humor.

Fred runs a small environmental company in Chesapeake. Have worked with him several times. Good guy with plenty of humorous stories about his days at UR.
