Plus was the person tested for covid before she got the vaccine? Don’t let anecdotes drive your decision
Even if they were tested before they got the vaccine, they could have still gotten COVID after they got the vaccine. First vaccine is only 65% immunity and 95% after the second dose.

So yeah, entirely possible to get COVID during the vaccination process still. Entirely impossible to get COVID from the vaccine though.

Now, I must say, I got mine the other day. It was quite painful as the George Soros one world order tracking chip requires them to use a larger needle.

Its all absolute craziness!! Cases cases cases. Numbers numbers numbers blah blah blah. The Dr of Doom says this, the world shakes. 99+% survival rate, but its so much more deadly then the flu. Destroy the youth of young people so Dr. Doom and the CDC can play GOD and stop the world from ever getting sick. “We wont get any older and we wont ever die.” Thank you Dr Doom you are our savior. Turn the world into germaphobe lunatics, alter society forever. Absolutely effen crazy!!!
And imo mods, this is a topic of discussion in this forum since it is affecting the basketball season.

More dead in a week than any previous years flu totals for the full year. With how sick I got from it I certainly was wondering if I would be one. Really disheartening and sad to see the post above yours be so dismissive of so many deaths.
Sorry you were sick, but glad you made it through, ply. And, I hope you still have your taste and smell, and don't have any other lasting side effects. I have a few friends who made it through, but still don't have taste or smell.

Are they being killed by college basketball games played in empty arenas?
Given asymptomatic transmission and the dearth (and futility at this point) of contact tracing, it's essentially impossible to say. But if it's a non-zero number, the number is almost certainly very low, which is why they've been able to play most of the games.

Everyone wear a mask. It's been said a hundred million times. Social distance. No need for groups or concerts or anything like that. Still everyday you see 200,000 cases a day throughout the world. I wish the doctor/nurses everyone the best of luck. Fighting something now with the vaccine. However, the vaccine is being distributed so slowly everywhere. I am hopeful by September of this year. We have a sense of normal. Unfortunately, everyday you don't see much improvement. Everything takes time and patience. Everyone work together and we get over this. Thank you.

More than 1918? 1957? 1958? 1968?
No...he's mistaken about that. I believe the figure he's referring to that's been making the rounds is that there have been more COVID deaths in the past week (23,000) than flu deaths in all of the 2019–20 flu season (22,000), not any season ever.

Correct, and it is also more than the flu season the year before in 2018-2019. That’s why I said that. I didn’t say it was more than any season ever:)

I'll leave it to the English majors but "any" and s on "years" did confuse me.

"either of the two previous years" would have helped me understand.

Geez we need basketball...

Not amazing at all...100% expected. The steps (some) people have taken to minimize COVID exposure do wonders for limiting the spread of all infectious respiratory diseases.
So the steps people have taken to minimize COVID haven't worked for COVID (4000 deaths a day) but work for flu? OK....

Not sure what Choppin is going for here. Packing the Robins Center full of fans will decrease the spread of CoVid? Or is he simply pointing out that for the claims that we’ve “closed things down” that because people continue to go out, restaurants remain open, stores are open, etc that CoVid is still spreading?

this is what's concerning to me. they're saying chest x-rays from both symptomatic and asymptomatic cases are showing serious damage.

"Everyone's just so worried about the mortality thing and that's terrible and it's awful," she told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth. "But man, for all the survivors and the people who have tested positive this is — it's going to be a problem."

It hasn’t worked (as well) for COVID because it’s a much more dangerous virus. 50% of Americans also get a flu shot, which certainly helps reduce transmission. Put social distancing and masks on top of that, and you smack the flu flat.

Even with vaccinations, 38 million got flu last season. Fortunately, that translated into “only” 22,000 deaths.

You’re a smart guy, don’t be dense. You do recognize that transmission would be dramatically higher for covid without the isolation practices in place. Come on Broc.

You're a smart guy, too. You do recognize that the virus cannot be "stopped" until a high enough percentage of the population has immunity.

Q: Why are flu cases way down?
A: People are wearing masks and distancing.
Q: Why is COVID still spreading uncontrolled?
A: People aren't wearing masks and distancing.

It's the same people making both of those arguments.

No one who knows what they're talking about has said it can be stopped. Even with a vaccine or herd immunity, it will be with us for a very long time, circulating at low levels. The whole point has been to slow it down to keep the healthcare system from being overwhelmed and minimize the number of people who get it while providing time for a vaccine to be deployed. We're getting there, but we're not there yet.

As for your Q&A, both things are indeed true in large part. We have successfully slowed the spread of both COVID and the flu thanks to masks and distancing...not as much as could have been done had everyone been on board, but certainly a significant amount.

One of those viruses just happens to be deadlier, more easily spread (particularly thanks to asymptomatic/presymptomatic transmission), and lacks a broadly deployed vaccine.

Look at it from a herd immunity perspective. Experts differ on what percentage of the population needs to be immune in order to knock something down (it depends on a lot of factors), but typically it's in the range of 70-80%. With flu, 50% of the population gets a flu shot, so we're already most of the way there! Add masks and distancing on top of that, and the flu is more or less squashed.

With COVID, we're starting from 0% protected, and masks and distancing have really been our only weapons for a year now. They are absolutely helping, but only the vaccine is going to really let us get it under control.

So agree for sure with the stoppage statement.

but regarding the q&a, it is not only possible but probable that they’re both objectively true. Seasonal flu is down compared to prior years ostensibly because of intentional isolation, whereas Covid is still spreading because the distancing and other response techniques are inadequate given the transmission rate and current level of spread.

But presuming your argument is that the horse(s) are too far out of the barn to be roped back in, that’s probably true. I don’t know that you stop the efforts though. And I’m only a pretend epidemiologist who stayed at a holiday inn express last night.

Hospitals and ICUs are getting overwhelmed right now. If we did not continue to be careful with masks and social distancing, and yes, with sporting events, we would be in big big trouble. Cancelling and postponing games stinks, but it is the right things to do.

We have right at 3 million deaths in the US every year. How many of the deaths this year with covid vs from covid we won’t know for awhile. They need to do an audit of deaths to get a clear picture.

this thread started off as covid as it affected basketball -- it has morphed to an argument about covid. Move that to the off topic board or I will lock this thread.
Regardless of where posted, it is the Causation of Very Intense Discussion.

Mask up and stay safe my friends. No one wants to be or cause the last casualty on the battlefield just as the cavalry (vaccine) arrives.

my concern is that even in those who recover and even in those who never show symptoms there are signs that you are likely to have lasting lung issues if you catch this.

and any lung issue would be a huge problem for an athlete.
