While I am sure all of us are much happier having the Spiders home on campus, it is interesting to see the improvements made by the Kickers, under Spider Leigh Cowlishow. They have added "sky boxes".

Does anyone recognize this facility? The picture was posted on @OneRichmond under the heading "Pro Day has arrived. We'll get underway in less than an hour." #OneRichmond

About four miles from my home. Very nice facility built primarily for the Richmond Raiders Indoor Football team.

I love on campus stadium but my heart will always be at City Stadium. Had some great times there.

Completely agree. Loved those packed houses when EW and Co. was tearing it up. The game atmosphere is not the same but the tailgaiting is much better no doubt at the Rob.

Speaking with Coach Rocco this summer he indicated to me they have looked into trying to play a game there in the future. I imagine the logistics would be hard though.

There was a certain personality to the old UR Stadium which is unmatched by the Brickhouse.Enjoyed the run down nature of the place. The field was great
and my northern buddies and I never had a bad tailgate there.Progress can sometimes be sterile.

I recall haring we spent over a million years ago on the turf (when the NCAA Soccer Championship came here). And I thought I heard recently they replaced the turf -- anyone know for sure?

I miss City Stadium and the great crowds we had for the season finale over the years. Not a fan of the Brickhouse. Chopped up seating, narrow aisles, and long bathroom lines make it unappealing on the visitor side.

One negative note with renovated Zable Stadium is we no longer will allow reentry.

Miss City Stadium like an extra nose. Old Zable had the worst sight lines of any stadium in the country. Glad to see the makeover although the sight lines on the visitors side will still be bad. Will you ever fill in the cattle entrance at the 50 yard line? If I were an Indian fan, I wouldn't like The Brickhouse either after the last couple of visits. Can't wait to see new Zable.

I disagree on the tailgating to some degree. There were certainly benefits to the 'first come, first served' deal at the Big House. As a function of it, we got to know the player parents much better than we do now. I really miss that.

City Stadium will always hold lots of good memories including in the more distant past when on occasion the place would be full. Particularly remember the day we beat the Hokies there in the rain. The bare bones nature of the place built in 1929 added to the atmosphere and never gave it a second thought.

Mo, can certainly respect that. Sadly I was an undergrad elsewhere during that time frame and was relegated to watching TV games unless I was on breaks so I can certainly be off on some of the scenes. I live right by there now and it kills me because I could stumble out my back yard to games if they played a game there.

The stadium being centrally located certainly helped with drawing the casual fan. Only 20 minute drive from most parts of Richmond. Not the case these days and people fear the parking situation + reduced capacity.

On another note, I would love to see our AD try and put the student section behind the visitor bench over the track at the Rob. I think that could help a little bit more with attendance giving students better seats and you could maybe sell the end zone seats to the public?Doesnt the city have a cap on the size of the stadium? Thoughts?

Still a dump!!!
Lots of fond memories! As far back as when I was in junior high, my parents and I would drive on game day from The Hill City (Lynchburg) to see the Spiders play. I remember Buster O to Walker "The Blade" Gillette.....TD! I recall UR fans pelting the field with tangerines in the closing moments of our conference clinching SoCon title win over the Indians. Our Spiders went on to win the Tangerine Bowl 49-42 over the unbeaten (until they played UR!) Ohio University Bobcats I watched UR beat WVU with Danny Buggs in 1973. Barry Redden gaining something like 200 yards against the Gobblers in a Spider victory! Jessie Williams (little #1) running a kickoff back for a TD against UNC in a Spider victory! After that game while leaving the stadium, I heard a UNC fan complain. "I cannot believe we lost to a tiny Baptist school!"

The track kills the atmosphere at the new stadium, because the fans are much further away from the action than necessary. Concerns were voiced about this when the stadium was built, but ignored.
Track is a minor sport at UR. We don't even have a men's program. They should have relocated the track elsewhere when building the stadium. Now it's too late, without spending millions to tear up the track, move the field closer to one grandstand, and re-building the other grandstand.

Well they could always lower the field and then build both stands down to the new level. Add in small endzone bleachers too and a nice new Football Building in the upper endzone. Could look like this.

There isn't really a good place for a dedicated track (and soccer, perhaps) facility on campus without destroying the existing fields that are used for recreation, varsity practices, and club sports.

Let's move back to City Stadium, I have great memories of past games there. We could move up to FBS, the ACC would certainly be eager to dump VPI for UR.

City Stadium has a track around it as well. No further away from field at Robins than at City Stadium.

That doesn't excuse the mistake of including a track inside the new stadium, which was supposed to address the shortcomings of City Stadium. Instead, we repeated one.

Agree. Think of how much better the atmosphere is in the RC now with fans closer to the court.

I was there in the rain when Barry Redden dropped about 240 on the Hokies. Fun day.

Let's return to City Stadium, we can, then, go FBS. I'm confident that the ACC would drop VPI for UR. I guarantee it.

I feel like I'm reading an April Fool's Day thread. Anyone who likes City Stadium better than what we have now is crazy. I started going to games at City Stadium in the mid-70's and certainly have great memories but there is just no comparison. Maybe the constant negativity from the basketball board has scrambled some brains. The stadium is great, tailgating is great, traffic is a non-issue, and the entire game day experience is fantastic.

ditto...many great memories as a student and an alum, which triggers a thought, perhaps the lack of a destination to go tailgate is negatively effecting student attendance? The student lot at City Stadium really "promoted" student attendance and sorta cultivated a tailgating competition atmosphere among the students. Now they simply roll out of bed without the motivation of a tailgate party to get them to the stadium. They need a place to tailgate....

If only there were places where students could gather before games to tailgate, party, meet with alums, etc. ... you know, places like fraternity lodges. The last time I was at UR for a Homecoming game, the ones that were still left were deserted on Friday night and on game day, because they had a limited amount of events where alcohol was involved (or some such nonsense) and they didn't want to use one for Homecoming.

I understand the Greek system wasn't for everybody, and that things have changed dramatically since I was in school (1972-76). But back in the day, the fraternities supplied a big fan base for football and basketball games and with the demise of the Greek system (some of it forced by the school) that natural fan base has been cut in half.

And keeping the track was a huge, huge mistake.

Fraternities and tailgates are still a big deal at schools in the deep south as are football games. Open the fraternities before games -- incentivize the kids to come out. Have them open before and after games. When I was in school, it was hard to keep KEGS out of the PACKED stands!

Times change. Even when I was in school the alcohol flowed. Drinking age was 18. That's not gonna change ever. Using the phrase "deep south" doesn't help at all although I kinda agree.

Easy solution. Drain the lake. The Commons would serve as the back of one of the end zones and could house football operations offices. Build a giant stadium literally in the center of campus. Accept an invitation to the SEC a few years later. Bingo.

Great idea! The library and dining facility could become luxury suites befitting any SEC school. OSC
