Burton

again, huge Burton fan. heck, I hope he becomes a 60% shooter from 3. just saying based on the inconsistency of where the ball goes on his 3 pointers so far, I don't see it. not everyone will be a pure shooter no matter how much work they put in. but he'll still be very effective.
So you don't see Cayo becoming a 40% three pointer shooter by season's end? ;)

lol. never seen a guy improve as much as Nathan in a year from the line, so who knows ... but no.

Not only the line, but his whole game just keeps improving. As a freshman, we weren't sure what we had in him, and he has turned himself into one heck of a player.

Yes, I would agree that Cayo is a very nice success story on player development for our staff.

LOL, I was just going to point out how many videos I saw of DeAndre Jordan shooting hundreds of FT's with John Lucas, and still terrible - BUT he did improve too - basically a 70 % ft shooter now. So yes improvement is very possible.

Back to Burton, he has a high level of athleticism, good length and size, and a good skill set to begin. Sky is the limit if he can continue to improve.

I see no reason why he will not!!

We all know Burton's upside is huge and he is going to be a terrific player, but yesterday's game reminds us that he is still a freshman. He had 3 terrible fouls that almost lost us the game. I hope he learns from his mistakes.

Little negative on players there 80sfan remember players & parents read this. Our late game ft shooting had a big role at end. Burton is already a terrific player. Had 8 pts & 5 boards in 9 minutes. He’s helping us not hurting us overall. As vt4700 pointed out in another thread the flagrant rule did us no favors for what seemed like accidental contact while being fouled ourselves.

I fear what could keep us from bid are two things...Mooney mismanagement of Burton’s pt and our bait & switch lunardi hire scheduling strategery. That’s on two highly compensated adults not college age students.

Keep up the great play Tyler. Finish strong Spiders.

Last night was the second time this season Burton has fouled a three-point shooter in a late game situation with a lead. It's inexcusable. He is already a very good player. He can be a great player. But he makes freshman mistakes and it contributes to his limited minutes. That's just a fact, no reason to deny it.

Every player makes mistakes including "freshman" ones. I don't remember the other late game situation but not sure what I'm denying anyway. I was making separate points. Burton is a net positive. If you think he should not be playing more I strongly disagree. There are 39 other minutes in the game. There are times to be conservative of course but in general we tend to play matador defense late in games with lead with little resistance when u still need to contest shots. We are not unique there but I'd rather have the attitude of contesting shots over wide open drives to hoop or wide open 3s. Burton is one of our best defenders and has a not give them something easy attitude. It's welcome & pays more dividends then not imo.

Burton a good player with a tremendous upside .....I’m sure he knows that foul on the late 3 pointer was a big mistake....he probably made himself run a few extra shuttles because of it.

What is not to like about Tyler Burton - he does not give up, offense or defense. The way the refs called two of the fouls involving Burton was beyond strange ....how often do you see that kind of sequence? As Branch Rickey said about baseball but can apply here - "give me the errors of enthusiasm versus the wisdom of complacency" Any player who hustles as much as Burton and they are few and far between will find his momentum carries him into situations from which he can not extricate himself - but so what, bring it on! Keep hustling Tyler! Glad you are a Spider!

Gilyard missed the front end of a 1+1, Francis missed three straight free throws including the front end of a 1+1... ALL in the last 2 minutes. That's zero out of a potential six free throw in the last two minutes of a close road game. I would say Gilyard and Francis almost lost us the game, not the guy that played only 8 minutes. And they aren't freshmen.

Free throw shooting has dropped off in the past 6 or 7 games, especially late game. We need them all...

No legs. Free throw shooting goes first.

GW couldn't hit a free throw either - nine misses in the second half. We dodged one.

I really think Burton has the upside to potentially be one of the greatest players in spider history. He has a great build along with great athleticism and skill. He also just has the will to win like I don't care if you are going for that 50/50 ball I am getting it. The only thing wrong with him right now are just small freshman mistakes and that will be fixed with time

26.3 % from 3. Raise that by 10 - 15 % and we are in business. I do feel good about his ability to do so. Has a good looking shot, even though he only connected on 10 for the season, I did find myself encouraging him to shoot them and had confidence. He should get a little bump from just adjusting to the D1 game. Next part is get in the gym like Sherod and shoot a gazillion a day. I don't want to see anymore videos of Noah Goldberg beating you in horse, and if he does rip the tape from him and tear it up.

I think you will see a huge improvement in Burton next year. I also think his shot is there and he has the confidence, just needs the reps like you said. It will be so nice to have two veteran athletes like Cayo and Burton to go along with our skilled players. They both seem to like playing defense and rebounding.
